Lots In June
I watched more movies in June than I thought. Here goes:
6-5-09 Taken - This was a great action movie about a girl who has been kidnapped to be in the slave trade. Her dad, a former spy must now find out where she is and rescue her.
6-5-09 Revolutionary Road - Based on a book by Richard Yates, this movie shows a couple who are tired of their day-to-day routine so they make a plan to move to Paris. I enjoyed this movie, but believe many people would find it too slow.
6-9-09 Wanted - This was an action movie about a group of assassins being hunted by one of their own. I loved all the action, but loathed the amount of cursing; it was unnecessary.
6-10-09 Defiance - Based on a true story, this film chronicles the escape of Jews during the Holocaust led by the Bielski brothers. This was a very good movie and I would recommend it to anyone interested in events of the Holocaust.
6-11-09 Thelma & Louise - I watched this movie with Christina since she had never seen it. She thought it was “really good”. My review was HERE.
6-11-09 The War of the Roses - I have mentioned watching this movie before, but never reviewed it. This was another movie Christina had never seen. I am very much enjoying sharing new films with her. You know you like a movie when you want to share it with someone else, plus watch it again yourself in the process. Even though this movie is from 1989 it still tells a great story. Two people fall in love, get married, have children, the wife makes a wonderful home atmosphere and the husband climbs the corporate ladder and is very successful. This is when the “war” begins and it is juicy. Christina accurately compared it to Mr. & Mrs. Smith only without all the spy stuff. This is a great movie!
6-12-09 Slumdog Millionaire - This movie is about a poor boy who is on the Indian version of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”Even though I had heard great things about the film and knew it won countless awards, I was still skeptical how it could be that good, two-hours long, and about a guy on a game show. It was! This was a terrific movie. I won’t say much more, but it was definitely worth watching and also watching through the credits. The biggest thing this film taught me was, I never, ever, ever, ever, want to visit India. Never!
6-12-09 Fargo - This was a true story with genuine events; only the names were changed. It was about a man who badly needed money so he hired two men to kidnap his wife so his father-in-law would pay off the kidnappers for the return of his wife. This way, he would get to keep a large portion of the money for himself. It was a very odd movie and scary that the events within the film actually took place. In case you plan to watch it, you should know that it contains graphic violence and very bad language throughout.
6-12-09 Love in the Time of Cholera - This is a romance about a man and woman who fall in love but are not allowed to marry because she can “do better”. He spends his life trying to mend the hole in his heart. Javier Bardem plays this man and is remarkable.
6-13-09 The January Man - Kevin and I rented this movie from the library thinking it was some juicy serial killer thriller. We really need to read the back of the boxes better! This was a mystery romance; and a bad one at that. A man is asked to return to his job as a police investigator to solve a string of murders which take place once a month. It sounds good, and I guess it was okay, but it definitely was not what we were expecting; especially not the comedy.
6-15-09 Derailed - This movie was rated R for language, violence, and some sexuality – you have been warned. It’s about a man and woman who meet on a train and decide to have an affair. That’s all I want to tell you. If you rent this movie, less than half way through you’ll wonder why in the world I wanted you to see it. You’ll be mad, but you need to stay with it because it takes you for a wild ride. By the end, I was breathless. If you watch it let me know what you honestly think. I thought it was terrific. I was able to rent it free at the library.
6-16-09 Kate & Leopold - This was a very good movie about a man from the 1870’s getting placed by accident in our modern world where he meets a very modern woman. It had an interesting and likeable plot and I would watch it again.
6-19-09 Valkyrie - This movie is based on true events and takes place during World War II. It is about German soldiers who had a plot to assassinate Hitler and bring down the Nazi regime. Although true to actual occurrences, this movie was very dry.
6-20-09 The House Bunny - This was a cute, although very predictable movie. It’s about a Playboy bunny who has to leave “The Mansion” and find a new home. She ends up at a sorority where she becomes the housemother of a group of misfit girls.
6-22-09 Transformers - I would consider this a comedy/action movie where beings from another planet come to Earth to find a very important code. It was good and I’m sure I will see the next installment which is now in theatres, but I will probably see it on DVD.

Duplicate
Does anyone know what this is called?
It grows on a shrub:
I am just curious. I think it is very pretty although from what I could tell, it attracted many flies.
This house is in our historic district here in Winchester:
The reason I show it to you is because they have a little duplicate house on their front porch:
What a neat idea!

Must Have Been Some BIG Pants
I am playing catch-up with our local newspaper, so this is technically old news, but still funny in my opinion:
The Winchester Sun June 23, 2009At 12:56 p.m. Monday, employees at Kroger reported that a man took $60 worth of ribeye steaks, stuffed them down his pants and left the store without paying for them. Employees chased the suspect into the parking lot, where he fled in an older model Ford Ranger.
Steaks? Really? I would think anyone could afford a can of SPAM which I refer to as “poor man’s meat”. Oh well.

When I say mom doesn’t look sick at all, I really do mean that. Here she is with Ashley this afternoon:
She had a fever again this morning. Her doctors have to be scratching their heads wondering what is going on.

Rash
Mom has had an allergic reaction to one of the antibiotics they are giving her. They don’t know exactly which one it was because there have been many. This reaction has caused a terrible rash to appear all over her skin so they have given her a cream to apply.
I took pictures of the rash and was given full permission to share them on this blog. If you are squeamish, you may want to stop right here.
This is how her foot looks. Notice how her toes are swollen (she says this looks better than it did):
This is another view of one leg and foot. She said the rash is terribly itchy.
Normally her nail polish is perfect; however when you’re in the hospital with cancer, the cancer comes first. Things that were once very important no longer matter so much. What matters is getting to go home. Since she had another fever this morning, going home will not be in her immediate future.

Lingering Fever
June 27, 2009
Mom continues to receive antibiotics, and platelets, along with an array of other medications. Her absolute neutrophil count and white blood counts are still low.
She continues to have fevers, although no infection has shown up in tests. Today her fever was as high as 102.5. They will keep her until these fevers stop.

A New Word
Throughout the years, I have mentioned the Lexington Cemetery over and over again. I’m sure some people think I am morbid; however one cannot visit the grounds and tell me it isn’t beautiful. I have several photo galleries which prove this. I have also shown many additional pictures in my posts.
Earlier this week, I found a new-to-me place in the cemetery. It’s in the basement of the office as soon as you go through the front gate and there is ample parking. If the office is closed, there are steps on the side of the building which lead to indoor restrooms. Straight down the hall and to the left is a Columbarium. Frankly, I had never heard this word, but Merriam-Webster defines a columbarium as “a structure of vaults with recesses for cinerary urns”.
This is one room:
Notice the stained glass window:
This was like being inside a bank vault:
I would think they would have to keep this open the same hours the cemetery is open (even if the office is closed) because people need to have the opportunity to visit their loved ones. I’m sure the basement door stays unlocked until 5 PM.
I have no desire to be cremated, but if I did, I would certainly consider this place. It is very tranquil.
