Of Mice And Men

If you have never read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck then you are surely missing something. Short enough to be completed in two days this book packs a big punch. The range of emotions the reader experiences is astounding.

The book takes place in California and is about the life journey of two men; one who is of average intellect and the other who is dumb. The thrilling conclusion is enough to keep any sensitive person thinking for days about what came to pass.

I've always wanted to read that. I'm going to!

I first read it in high school and I remembered some of what happened, but not all of it. It is on a 5th grade reading level, but be prepared for the cussing - there is plenty to go around.

I read it this past summer- wonderful and very sad, too.

Can't cuss more than Stephen King's characters! I was hoping it was available for free download as an eBook, but it's too recent. Blah. I'll have to order it from the library.

My book, "Stiffs: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach is in, I heard. Yay! You can read excerpts here:

GW: Your reading choice is very interesting. Are there any pictures in that book?

I went to the library today and came out with not one, but a huge stack of books. There are pictures in Stiffs, but not what you'd think. They're funny. One is an old photo from about 1900 showing three men in bowler hats shooting a man (a chapter about how cadavers are used by the military). Another has a still from the original Frankenstein movie.

I also got a compilation of several Steinbeck short novels, including Of Mice and Men. Oh, and two books about Photoshop...And one called Guerilla Publicity: Hundreds of Sure-Fire-Tactics to Get Maximum Sales for Minimum Dollars. And I had to get Leo Laporte's 2003 Technology Almanac.

Also in my great bundle were nine photography magazines ("Popular Photography & Imaging" and "Petersen's Photographic").

Last, but not least, I am Puppy, Hear Me Yap with photos by Valerie Shaff and text by Roy Blount, Jr.

I'm like a kid in a candy store when it comes to the library. And it's all FREE! I still can't believe it, even as an adult. :)

Aaaargh. HTML didn't work. All my nice italicized book titles are just plain text. *sniffle*

Oh, and a friend gave me an advance reading copy of Dean Koontz's "Odd Thomas". She works PT at a book store and got it through there. It's pretty good so far!

My goodness! You sound like my family when we hit the library! Adults can rent 3 DVD's each on their card, so Kevin rents 3 and I rent 3. That's probably not what they WANT you to do, but they have never stopped us and it is all on separate cards.
Do you remember way back when Vikki wrote about the library charging fees to check out books? I always wondered why they did that where she lives.

Yes, I do remember that! The library in the town next to us charges $1 per video or DVD. They do have a very large collection, so I guess that's how they fund it. But no library I've ever patroned charged for books.
