Time Marches On

Last night was the open house at Ashley’s school. I may be in the minority, but I thought that it was a complete waste of time (as it is every year). Like I said in an earlier post, if the open house was before school started then it would be beneficial. Last night I already knew who her teacher was and which room she was in. We’re not supposed to talk shop with the teachers because “this isn’t a conference”, so basically we just go in the room and stand around. The teachers normally don’t have anything prepared to say or do, so you just go to your child’s desk and say, “oh so this is where you sit!” It would have been nice if we had been shown the textbooks or something, but I guess we were supposed to find them ourselves.

Her teacher seems like a very nice person. It’s not her fault that this is the way things go every year. It’s just something that we as parents have to live with. After this year, Ashley only has two years left at this school and then we get to tackle the middle school. Wow! She is growing up fast. Now that I’m older the years are going by much more quickly. Who said that was allowed to happen?!

I know what you mean as I've been on both sides of the fence. I normally address all of the parents and go through aspects of the curriculum for the coming term and any changes to regime.
I agree children grow up so quickly; Edward is 6feet 3inches! Now that is growing up!

Does she seem to get a good education in spite of these organizational frustrations?

GW: she does a wonderful job in school, but I believe this has more to do with her just being smart and able to comprehend things even when the teachers fail to spend enough time with her. Many of her friends have been held back.

I have just joined a school which does some things like this and it is sometimes difficult for the teacher to see the reason for the evenings! We had one to show off our art work having just won a national award - the only problem was that the week before all the art had to be taken down and put up on display elsewhere .... so we had two days of intensive art which we enjoyed but it did not show our normal work!!
