Winged Creature

We had only put Ashley to bed ten minutes before she came back into our room practically in tears. "There's something in my corner!" She was terrified.

"Well, let's go listen." I told her.

So, she and I walked into her room while Kevin stood outside the door just beyond the baby gate just in case something had gotten in. (Many years ago a vole found its way into our house. It was a nightmare trying to catch that thing!)

I sat down on her bed and said, "Let's just listen." We were very quiet and then we all heard the light scratching sound. I truly thought that something was in her corner behind her Barbie's when she exclaimed, "My worm!"

We all looked over at the shoebox that had been in her room on her side table since mid October. "Could it really be that?" I thought to myself.

"Grab the box! Quick!" I told her.

She got the box and I put an ear up to it. Yes, that was where the sound was coming from. We all quickly went out back in our nightclothes and slowly, carefully opened the lid to the shoebox.

Here is what we saw:

It's hard to believe that it lived in this box, wrapped in the cocoon in the corner since October. Kevin and I honestly thought that it was dead.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that it survived. I am thrilled that Ashley got to see one of God's miracles for herself.

We have laid the shoebox outside and slightly ajar. He's on his own now.

It is so pretty. Really neat. I am glad that it survived. It's amazing. How big was it? It looks huge compared to the shoebox lid.

Oh, wow! I'd forgotten about the caterpillar, too! That's so cool a story. :)

Chastity: It IS huge! That is a regular sized shoebox so you can imagine how big it actually is. The last time I checked, it was still hanging inside the box. I guess it doesn't feel comfortable enough to leave yet.

I once found a cocoon that hatched into that very kind of moth. It was the only one of it's species ever reported in my area. I was credited with "discovering a new species in the area." It is a very beautiful moth.
