Coffee

I drink a cup of coffee every morning at home before going to work. Once I get to work, the other girls make a pot and drink it, but I don’t.

Today one of my coworkers asked me to wash a sink full of dishes – they were all coffee cups and the coffee pot. I remarked that I didn’t drink the coffee, but would wash the dishes anyway. Her response was, “Well, we’ll all take turns.”

I have a problem with this. Why should I have to wash their coffee cups and the coffee pot when I’m not the one drinking it? That would be the same as me paying for the coffee and not drinking it.

If she asks me again, I think I’ll have to speak up.

This is always a difficult one, sometimes it is the one who leaves most mess who sets up the system for others to clean up. Take care, it can escalate into other issues....

Where I work I have similar issues with a charity collection that's been set up. At one time you could wear jeans to work on Friday and pay a voluntary contribution towards a charity that my employer supports. Three years down the line the dress code at work is less formal(we wear jeans every day)but the contribution seems to be compulsary now; we're never told what charity we're supporting and you get treated like a pariah if you refuse to donate. I've started to speak up about it; politely and gently of course. No one should feel forced to do something that's not in their contract.

Perhaps an annual spring cleaning of 'habits at work' would be a good idea - world wide!!
