My World, Your World

In the past and in the present there has and will always be the question: Do you want progress?

Some would say this question has a simple answer – yes. But I wonder have these people really thought about what progress is costing us – costing them?

Years ago when a new development was built very close to Winchester, I was the first one to say, thank the Lord! We needed closer places to shop, great restaurants to eat in, a movie theatre with a rockin’ sound system and stadium seating. Yes, I thought we needed it and I am thankful for it today.

However, when this development was being built did I once think of the animals it would displace? No.

Where did the deer go? What about the skunks, gophers, groundhogs, turtles, rabbits; what about these animals; where did they go?

I believe the urban sprawl is out of control. It is happening at a rapid rate here in Winchester, but it seems especially fast in Lexington. I can leave town for a week and when I go back, there are new houses and buildings being erected.

What happens to my little friends? Like you, they are mammas and daddies with babies to feed and nurture.

Is your mind at ease knowing that these little friends are out there everywhere and no one is trying to relocate them before the bulldozers move in?

All of these new housing subdivisions bother me. Why do you think the deer are running through neighborhoods? They have no place to go and they don't know any better! It's our own faults and it's shameful.

The older I get, the more I appreciate those little friends. You would be surprised at the joy the little beings bring to me. Just to catch a glimpse of them on a hillside fills my heart with gladness. I have even called out to them, “You can come and live in my backyard. I won’t hurt you. I promise.

I really don’t care if that sounds crazy either.

As Barbara Walters says, “Let’s take a little time to enjoy the view."

What A Wonderful World By: Louis Armstrong

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.

We better stop and think now about what we’re doing or there won’t be any beautiful scenery left.

Tami, I have this same thought on the way to work in the mornings. I see those animals who have been pushed out of their homes and it's not pretty. In my neighborhood we have lots of wild animals still, but one crabby neighbor has a trap for the raccoons and when he catches them he takes them out in the country and dumps them. Guess that's o.k. but they have homes and families here.

Some people don't appreciate "mother nature" and
the lovely scenery; they only think about the BIG
$$$ that they are going to make from whatever project they are building. What gets me are all the housing subdivisions that are being built all over the country, and the housing market is virtually at a stand-still. Housing is really slow in Florida, but yet major housing projects are being started. Does this make sense, NO!

Valid points, Tami. And if *we* can understand what you're saying then why don't planners, architects and landowners? Humans living in harmony with the surrounding nature isn't difficult. It just takes thought and application. It's a pity everything comes down to money in the end :(

It hurts me too when I think that our little furry friends are being pushed out of their homes. What really hurts is to know that alot of them may not make it out. They get killed in the process. People need homes to live in and places to shop, etc... but surely as much technology that we have there could be a solution so that our animals wouldn't have to suffer the consequences of our actions.

Kevin's Mom has been in my prayers. I had not heard this before I talked to Sharon on Friday. I hated to hear this lady had all of this bad stuff to happen! Please let her know people are praying for her.

Lexington is just getting ridiculous. You can't go anywhere up here now without seeing a new suburb or strip mall. I live here, and I still couldn't tell you how many restaurants and stores we have because every time I drive anywhere in this town, there is always something new under construction. It truly makes me ill.
