All About Animals

Kevin came home from the library with THIS book. Oh, the titles people come up with!

I have added a photo to the Low Calorie Foods gallery making the total 13.

Since I discussed my own pets in yesterday’s post, I would now like to discuss animals in general.

I don’t know anyone who owns any exotic animals.

I do not believe it is acceptable to test cosmetics on animals. Testing on animals for medical research is okay with me as long as there is a true need and the outcome will help people.

There are many different types of animals I would not eat just because I am either:
A: not used to it
or
B: some animals are too cute for me to eat.

I eat regular meats such as beef, pork, turkey, and chicken. I would not eat squirrel, frog legs, deer, rabbit, duck, or anything with the head still attached (like the duck in A Christmas Story). The meat must come in a package with writing on it or you won’t see it in my freezer.

We have been to the zoo several times, but the last time we went, I felt so sorry for them. I believe they were meant to run free. As much as I love seeing them, I think they are sad to be enclosed. It reminds me of that episode of the Twilight Zone called People Are Alike All Over. If you read the synopsis, you will see it is the same thing.

I don’t support animals in the circus either. I don’t like the idea of keeping them in cages traveling constantly for our entertainment. As much as we are told they receive the best care, I have a hard time believing that.

Those feelings aside, I do not believe it is okay to free an animal that has lived in captivity all its life. It would be unfair to the animal to expect it to survive on its own.

I believe hunting is okay if the meat is actually eaten. I do not believe in hunting for sport. As far as wearing furs, this same sentiment applies. If the person ate the meat of the animal whose fur they wear, this is okay with me. In this case, the animal did not die only for its pelt. Sadly, this is normally not the case.

I have never been to a horse race, but I have ridden a horse. They are hard on your rear end! I wasn’t comfortable with the experience.

My favorite animal is the giraffe. I love their coloring, big eyes, and long eyelashes and neck. I believe they are very graceful.

I agree with you mostly, but I do eat cute animals - lamb is just so tasty! I also can't stomach the zoo or the circus - those poor animals. It's just wrong.

I agree with everything you've said here. I used to enjoy taking the kids to the zoo, to see how excited they got, but after going a few times, it began to make me sad also. The lions' area especially looked very small to me for some reason. I could just imagine those lions running free somewhere on the African plains and it made me sad. Definitely do not agree with animals being used in the circus. I DO NOT believe they are being treated decently. As far as hunting, I think it's ok if you really need the meat for food, but I don't agree with hunting for sport. I have actually eaten deer meat before and I have to say that it wasn't bad at all. I ate it in some chili and it had a mild, sweet flavor. My favorite animal is the penguin. I also love moose.

I struggle with zoos. One the one hand, there are zoos which have gone out of their way to make the animals' enclosures well-suited to the animals' normal habitats, and I don't know that an animal raised in captivity would necessarily know what it was missing. But I can see your point, too. Still, mankind has domesticated various animals since the beginning of time, and all of them were wild at some point. Through selective breeding, the various species became increasingly domesticated. Hmmmm. It's a wide-open subject, that's a certainty!
