Unsanitary

This Article which was sent to me via email, brings up some very interesting things.

Go read it and then you can come back to me ;) It will open in a new window.

First off, I call it a purse and not a handbag. I guess in different parts of the world, people call it different things, but I will refer to it as a purse.

I hate it and it ticks me off when I walk in a bathroom stall and there is no hook to hang my purse on. At some places this isn’t a problem because the toilet paper dispenser is big enough to sit my purse on. There are some places where I don’t have that luxury though. I walk in and there is no hook and no place to sit my purse. This is where some balancing skills come into play. My purse weighs about 15 pounds and that is no joke. I have posted about the contents of my purse before.

Anyway, I have to balance that baby on my arm while pulling down my pants. Then I have to sit with it in my lap whilst I go. Wiping is where it becomes really hard to balance. I can’t just sling the thing over my neck or it would kill me. Trust me, I have considered doing that, but knew it would be a very bad idea and I would have a sore neck for a week.

So in the article, they talk about women sitting their purses on the bathroom floor. I would never do that! My purse is also cloth; one of the ones that holds the most dirt. I don’t even sit it on the floor of a restaurant while I am eating. When I cannot sit it next to me in a chair or a booth, I balance it once again in my lap. Unless there is a wall behind me, I will not hang it on the back of the chair. To me, this is begging for someone to rob you. I don’t trust other people at my table to watch what is happening to my purse hanging on the back of my chair. There is just too much that can go wrong.

I do sit my purse on the counters and kitchen table. The article is correct though, it’s no different than putting a pair of shoes on the table. I need to think about that from now on. Also, Ashley is in middle school and she takes her purse to school and then sits it on the kitchen table. How sanitary do you think that is?!

Ashley’s purse – on the kitchen table!

I also put my purse in any buggy (cart) I get at Wal-Mart. That can’t ever be good. I have also sat it on the floor of the changing room while I am trying on clothes or on the counter in the changing room. You wouldn’t think that would be too dirty.

Now that I really think about it, my purse has been on bleachers, classroom floors, and the floor at church. Yea, I need to keep it off the counters and table. What about you?

Oh gosh, I'm not even going to read that article. If it hasn't killed me at this point in my life, I don't need to know about it :) Cute purse Ashley!!

You know, I never even thought about this before. I'm glad you posted this. I will definitely be more careful about where I put my purse from now on. I never put my purse on bathroom floors, I always hang it on the hook or set it on top of the toilet paper dispenser like you said. I do, however, set my purse on the sinks in public bathrooms which is not good. I've heard that the sink areas of public bathrooms are the dirtiest parts of the room. I think I'm going to buy a new purse, a messenger type bag, one that I can wear across my chest so I don't have to worry about setting it down anywhere.

I read your blog this morning before I left to run errands, etc. It caused me much thought today as I was dealing with my purse in various situations. It is just truly amazing that we are not all seriously ill, when you think about where are purses have been!

I use the hooks or TP dispenser, or I hang the strap on the corner of the door, being mindful of anyone coming in. Still, I guess I don't worry about it too much. Most people have decent immune systems because they have been exposed to common bacteria.

ANother comment - after going out to do some shopping, your article made me think very carefully aout where I put my bag down. Just like your blog about flushing the loo - I now never flush it without putting the cover down and my toothbrush is firmly kept in the bathroom cabinet!!
