Sad, But True

I read with curiosity Tammy’s post about her Aphid problem. In case you don’t know, this is Norman’sWoman”. I find it interesting how other people handle bug problems and what bug problems they have.

We are currently experiencing problems with Carpenter Bees. These bees like unpainted wood and can do a lot of damage. The males don’t sting, however the females do especially when trying to protect their nests. This stinging will become a big concern in a few weeks when we open the pool since the bee chose our deck stairs for its home.

This is the damage we have on one of the steps leading up to our deck:

We will buy Sevin Dust and puff it into the hole because this was recommended to us by an expert/relative of ours. It is also recommended by the University of Kentucky Department of Entomology. I cannot ask for better advice than that!

What is amazing to me is the perfect holes they make:

If painful stinging wasn’t involved, I would leave it alone, but that is not the case.

I'm sure you know to do this, but please be sure to keep Guido out of the area while the dust is there.

Well that makes walking on the decking rather like an adventure!! How on earth do you know how much of it is eaten away - that pile of sawdust looks enormous!

Tammy: Thank you for the reminder.

Liz: Since they make tunnels through the wood, there is no telling how much damage was done.
