Happy New Year!

After-Christmas Poem

Put away the Christ Child,
Lay His Mother by.
Wrap in tissue paper
The Star which shone on high.

Take down the wooden stable,
The manger, too, but leave
Something of His love to last
Until Next Christmas Eve!

Johnny Who?

A few nights ago we watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl starring Johnny Depp. Last night we watched The Astronaut's Wife which also stars Johnny Depp. You wouldn’t even know that this was the same person! When I think Of Johnny Depp, my mind immediately goes to What's Eating Gilbert Grape or Edward Scissorhands. In Pirates of the Caribbean he looks and plays the part of Jack Sparrow to a T. I have never seen him look so clean cut as he did in The Astronaut's Wife. This movie was a psychological science fiction thriller. It was good all the way to the end. Plus, if you want to see Johnny Depp look completely different – this is the movie that will do it.

The fifth season of Sex and the City came out today and guess who bought it?! I can’t wait to watch it tonight!!! Since we no longer get HBO I have no idea what happened in season 5. Once this last season wraps up I hope it doesn’t take long for the DVD to be released. I get anxious.

Jolie & Barrymore

Last night we ended up watching Life or Something Like It. Angelina Jolie plays a reporter. While she’s interviewing a homeless man who claims to be a prophet, he tells her that she’s going to die in a week. I enjoyed this. I love Angelina Jolie and this movie was different. I had no idea what would happen in the end.

Tonight we watched Riding in Cars with Boys. Drew Barrymore did a fine job in this movie. She plays the part of a 15 year old that gets pregnant at the end of the 60’s. From there, the movie shows what her life was like raising him. What amazes me is that Drew Barrymore can still look convincingly like a 15 year old. Don’t we all wish that we could look so young?!

Extinct?

We got Ashley a cute board game for Christmas called The Eloise Game. It is based on the character Eloise from the children’s books written by Kay Thompson. I was going to put a link on here so that you could see a picture of it, but I cannot find one anywhere! It’s like it doesn’t even exist. How odd! I’m thinking now that I better not ever get rid of it. It might be worth some money one of these days.

I’m off to watch a movie now. I have no idea what it will be yet, but I’ll let you know when I’m finished ;)

Christmas Stuff

My mom, dad, and aunt all came over for Christmas Eve. We had finger foods to eat and then the kids opened their presents from us. Christmas Day was spent over at mom & dad’s house. The kids got tons of presents from everyone. We had a nice dinner, spent some time talking, and then came home. I think Kevin was in Ashley’s floor for a few hours at least opening up her Polly Pocket sets. She still has about eight Barbie’s that need to be opened.

Mom & Dad bought Andrew a huge keyboard. He set that up and played for a while. He got tons of other stuff too, but lucky for us he’s old enough to set his own stuff up :)

Click HERE to see some pictures. I’m sorry I didn’t take more!

14 Things

FOURTEEN THINGS THAT IT TOOK OVER 50 YEARS TO LEARN
By Dave Barry

1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on
the same night.

2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has
not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would
be "meetings."

3. There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."

4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never
want you to share yours with them.

5. You should not confuse your career with your life.

6. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

7. Never lick a steak knife.

8. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip.

9. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling
reason why we observe daylight savings time.

10. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests
that you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging
from her at that moment.

11. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age eleven.

12. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender,
religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside,
we ALL believe that we are above-average drivers.

13. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice
person. (This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.)

14. Your friends love you anyway.

The Birth Of Christ

Excerpt from The Holy Bible
Book of Luke
Chapter 2

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; (As it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

See You In Three Weeks

Andrew had his last orthodontist appointment of the year this morning. Unfortunately, we’ll have to go back in three weeks. This is my fourth year of traveling out of town once every three weeks and Andrew’s fourth year without gum, gummy bears, caramel, peanuts, popcorn, etc. I will be so glad when he gets his braces removed and I know that he will be also. I can’t imagine what it will feel like to him to be able to run his tongue over his teeth. To not have to worry about metal poking your gums – I’m sure that will be a relief too. I’ve never had orthodontic work so I have no idea what it must feel like. From what I have seen, I am very grateful for the teeth that I was given. I can only pray that Ashley’s teeth come in straight!

Clutter: Part 2

In my last post entitled “Clutter” I was trying to explain in my own little way why you shouldn’t keep everything that someone gives to you. This morning I found an article written by Dawna Walter, the host of BBC America’s The Life laundry. She explains Why People Hoard. It is an excellent article and explains things much better than I ever could. Of course, you have to have an open mind :)

Clutter

We watched the movie Insomnia this afternoon. It’s about a detective (Al Pacino) trying to solve a murder mystery. All in all it was a pretty good movie.

Jennifer and Harold bought our hutch from us so Harold and dad came over and picked it up today. Honestly, we were just using it for storage anyway. The dishes that it displayed were never used so I don’t feel bad about it. I have fallen in love with several new TV shows that have made me see the error of my ways.

The Learning Channel has a show called Clean Sweep. The Style Network has Clean House and BBC America has The Life Laundry. All of these shows are designed to show us how much clutter we accumulate in our lives. They take two or three rooms (depending on the show) and move everything out of them onto the lawn. There are three piles: The Keep pile, the Sell pile, and the Trash pile. They go through item by item and decide which pile they want that item to go in. After all the junk is gone through, an expert comes in and helps them decrease the useless items down even further. The next day they have a yard sale. Everything that isn’t bought gets sent to charity. You didn’t think they would let you take all that junk back in the house now did you?! They end up redecorating the rooms and organizing everything. It always looks great and a huge burden is lifted from the owner’s shoulders.

Think about it: Most of what we hang onto is absurd really. We have our memories of who that person was that gave us the item and so we don’t have to hang onto every little thing. I love my children and I do save some of their work, but I don’t have to keep everything they do. The same thing goes for gifts. Just because someone gives it to you doesn’t mean you have to keep it. That’s why I decided to just LET GO of the hutch. It wasn’t our style, it was given to us, and we kept it for seven years. We paid our dues! Were we expected to keep it forever?!

#2

We had our second snow day today and actually I was quite pleased about it. With the flu going around as fast as it is, I wanted to keep the kids at home. Final exams were supposed to be given today. I’m sure they’ll make them up when they go back after the New Year; I just wonder how much information they will actually remember. Grades are sure to be somewhat lower than they would have been.

On another note: We watched the movie How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It was very funny and I would definitely watch it again.

#1

We had our first “snow day” today; meaning that we didn’t have to go to school because of the snowy roads. While Andrew went to see The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King at the theatre; Kevin, Ashley, and I watched Ocean's Eleven here at home. I thought this movie was awesome! If you liked the movie Entrapment then you would love this!

I also took the time today to clean out my file folders. I keep all of our bills in a filing cabinet in individual folders and I try to clean them out once a year. We have a great paper shredder that we use so that no one else knows the amounts of anything. Of course, I just saw on a CSI episode where they put papers back together that had been shredded, but I really doubt that anyone wants to know that much about us anyway. We filled two garbage bags!

Ten Things

Ten Things To Say About A Christmas Gift You Don't Like

10. Hey! There's a gift! I don't think I have ever seen that particular color before.

9. Well, well, well ... Will you just take a look at that!

8. Boy, if I had not recently shot up 4 sizes that would've fit.

7. This is perfect for wearing around the basement.

6. Gosh. I hope this never catches fire! It is fire season though. There are lots of unexplained fires.

5. If the dog buries it, I'll be furious!

4. I love it -- but I fear the jealousy it will inspire.

3. Sadly, tomorrow I enter the Federal Witness Protection Program.

2. To think -- I got this the year I vowed to give all my gifts to charity.

And the Number One Thing to say about a Christmas gift you don't like

1. "I really don't deserve this."

We Need A Little Christmas

What an ugly day it is outside! It’s dark and dreary and raining! Everything is gray. The only things that liven it up are all of the Christmas lights. As I’ve said, we have colored lights, but the white lights are very pretty also. Out of probably thirty houses on our street, five have lights; and that’s stretching it. I would think that more people would put lights out especially those with young children. Then again, I don’t remember mom and dad decorating outdoors when I was little. It could be because the house is so big; then again it was probably because they worked. Being a stay-at-home mom gives me an advantage. I can be here and make sure that everything gets done. If I worked outside the home, I think I would be too tired to worry about lights. I would say as we get older, we’ll feel that way anyway. As long as the tree is beautiful inside, who cares if there are lights on the outside? They just make it exceptionally pretty on these dreary evenings. What will we do when January comes?!

Love

A friend sent me this in an email. I have no idea who wrote it, but thought that it was worth sharing. Everyone can learn something from this:

Love

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family; I'm just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautiful adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my friends and family; I'm just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my friends and loved ones, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's cantata, but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child.

Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband.

Love is kind, though harried and tired.

Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas China and table linens.

Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way.

Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can't.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things; Love never fails.
Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of love will endure forever.

Keeping Warm

We had our first snow. Here is what it looked like. If you look close enough you will see the snow flying through the air.

We decided that we wanted to stay in, stay warm, and bake a bit. So far, we have made Chex Party Mix. I also made a big pot of homemade vegetable soup for dinner. Now Kevin is working on some peanut butter fudge and Andrew is making cookies. I hope the peanut butter fudge turns out. For some reason we have trouble with it every year. Wish us luck!

*UPDATE*
The peanut butter fudge turned out perfect! Kevin is so happy :)

Another Collection

Several months ago dad and mom gave us Christmas money. With my money I decided that I wanted to complete my Agatha Christie book collection. I had bought many locally, but most I couldn’t find here. As a result, I went to ebay and started bidding. 90% of the books I found were in England. That wasn’t surprising seeing that Agatha Christie was English. Long story short: my collection was made complete today. I now have everything that she wrote including the books she wrote under Mary Westmacott and Agatha Christie Mallowan. I am thrilled to say the least and I have lots of reading to do!

Cartoons

For about two years we tried to get the CartoonNetwork here in Winchester. We had heard of all the great cartoons on there and we wanted to see them! Finally, we got it and the kids love it. I don’t watch it as much as I thought I would just because I want to see the older cartoons that I grew up with.

Kevin did some digging and found out some very interesting information! Has anyone ever heard of the Cartoon Network Boomerang channel? They show all of the cartoons that I would love to see: The Jetson’s, The Flintstone’s, The Smurfs, Looney Tunes, Speed Buggy and TONS more! We have to get this channel! I wonder how long it will take for us to get it here?

An Innocent

Ever since my sister, Jennifer and her husband, Harold have been married, they’ve had the same cats. Two cats to be exact; one female with think, gray hair named Sophie and the other a long haired orange male named Henry. For about eight years these two cats have been members of the family. They have been faithful, loving companions – sweet animals that gave love and only expected that that same love would be given.

About a year ago one of the cats started peeing on everything: beds, chairs, clothes, etc. Jennifer and Harold immediately suspected Sophie the gray haired female. I think they suspected her because she was overweight by about ten pounds. I sense they believed that maybe she couldn’t hold her bladder. Living in a two story house and having the litter box upstairs, they decided to put one downstairs also. This seemed to help things. Very rarely did we hear of anything getting peed on.

Just recently we started hearing the stories again about how things were being ruined by Sophie. Jennifer and Harold had just bought a new couch and loveseat (which I posted about earlier) and they didn’t want to see it get ruined.

They talked to the vet over the phone and he said that she sounded like she had a behavioral problem. Now tell me this, should a vet, a good vet, be trying to diagnose a cat over the phone? I don’t think so. Anyway, he said she sounded like she had a behavioral problem and that was that.

On Saturday, Harold and my dad took Sophie to have her “put to sleep”. Dad made sure that he asked Harold, “Are you sure that this is the right cat? You better be sure that she’s the one peeing and that it’s not Henry.” Harold assured him, “I’m sure.” So, on Saturday, a beautiful, loving sweet cat was put to sleep. It only cost them $35.

This afternoon my sister called me. She told me when Sophie started peeing on the bed they put a plastic, fitted, mattress cover on their bed. She said, “I took the sheets off the bed to wash them. When I went back to the bedroom, there was urine sitting on top of the plastic mattress cover. It was Henry. We got rid of the wrong cat.”

I think it is so heartbreaking. I cannot even express how sad I am over this. Sophie was punished for something that she did not do and then she was killed. Now tomorrow they will take Henry to have him put down. I keep thinking how unfair all of this is. If it were our cat, Church, we would take him to the vet for tests, x-rays, medicine – whatever was needed. We would put a diaper on him before we would have him put to sleep. Church is the first pet that I have ever had as an adult so I have never gone through anything bad. Still, I know that I love him enough to do whatever it would take to get him better.
I’m sorry Sophie.

New Christmas Songs

I love the old favorites when it comes to Christmas music: Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Brenda Lee, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, I could go on and on. They sing the classics that we’re used to hearing and I will always love them and listen to them, but I would like to recommend a new Christmas CD to add to your own collections. It’s the Hilary Duff - Santa Claus Lane CD and it is a blast to listen to! Hilary Duff is the one who plays Lizzie on the Lizzie McGuire show on The Disney Channel. Ashley really wanted this CD and we bought it for her because she never asks for much. She had us playing it in the car before too long and now Kevin and I both love it. There are some very upbeat, catchy songs on there. Try it out on the headphones at Wal-Mart and you’ll see what I mean :)

Suggestive Clothing

Please visit Lisa Whelchel's Official Website. Go to her “daily journal” and then click on “this week’s entry”. A new window will pop up with her December 8th post.

In case you don’t know: Lisa Whelchel is the one who played Blair Warner on TV’s The Facts of Life. She is a Christian, the mother of three, homeschool teacher, and lecturer. She does much more than this, but you can read about all of that at her site.

I found her post interesting this week because it concerns the clothing store Abercrombie & Fitch. We have one of these stores in a local mall, but Kevin and I have never gone in because #1 It looks like clothes for teenagers and #2 They look like they wouldn’t sell bigger clothes. From the posters on the front windows all you see are very skinny teenagers. Not that there’s anything wrong with skinny teens; we just don’t fit in that category. A friend of mine used to work in the local store and she said that they HAD to wear Abercrombie & Fitch clothing while they were working. She said that the jeans were cut so low that they showed her butt crack. But apparently, “that helped them to sell more”, she said.

Ho! Ho! Ho!

THIS news article tells about how a first grade teacher in Florida convinced her class that there was no Santa Claus. In our house, our kids have never believed in Santa Claus. The kids have always known that we buy them their gifts. We feel that we are the ones who work hard for the money and they should know this; they should know that we spent hours carefully selecting each gift and wrapping it up just for them because we love them. Why would we want to give that credit to someone else? I do not however condone what this teacher did. Yes, it made for a good discussion, but it wasn’t appropriate, especially with first graders. I have stressed to my kids that they are not to tell anyone “the truth”. Andrew no longer has this problem since he is older, but Ashley struggles with it. I can tell that she hates lying, but she has to or the conversation will turn ugly and she knows it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with children believing, but it was better for us this way. I also think this helped them to trust us to always tell them the truth. Unlike the teacher in this article, I would never reveal anything to anyone else’s child. I play right along. Ho! Ho! Ho!

To Eat Or Not To Eat. That Is The Question.

Al Roker now has a Holiday Cookbook:!? What’s up with that? I’m glad that he’s lost weight and is happy, but he did have gastric bypass surgery. It’s not like he lost the weight himself. Having a holiday cookbook is a little much seeing that he can eat so very little now days himself. Kevin works with a woman who has had this surgery and all she can eat for lunch is three, yes THREE, Pringles and TWO WHOLE M&M’s. Give me a break! These people cannot talk to us about eating. When they had that surgery they left the “real people eating” world. My sister has a close friend who’s also had the surgery and she seems miserable to me. For Thanksgiving she said that she only ate a very small piece of turkey. Then she tried to eat a small bite of pumpkin pie and she got really sick.

A woman that lived two houses down from my sister died just weeks ago from an infection that she got after having this same surgery. I just don’t think it’s safe and I don’t think that the psychological issues have been thought out. Would you really want to live the rest of your life without food? Food is a major part of our lives and most everything we do revolves around it. I for one, wouldn’t want to live that way.

Bing

I love to hear Bing Crosby sing this:

Do You Hear What I Hear?
Said the night wind to the little lamb,
"Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite,
With a tail as big as a kite."
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
"Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the the sea,
With a voice as big as the the sea."
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
"Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know?
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold--
Let us bring him silver and gold,
Let us bring him silver and gold."
Said the king to the people everywhere,
"Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people, everywhere,
Listen to what I say!
The Child, the Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light,
He will bring us goodness and light."

Radio Shows

Have you heard of the Rick Dees morning radio show? Whether you have or not, you need to listen to his Candid Phone section. This is where he calls people and makes prank phone calls. These audio clips are good for hours of great laughs!

I personally am a huge fan of the Bob & Sheri morning radio show. They don’t make prank phone calls, but they do have a “chat room” where people call in and talk about different subjects each day. It’s very interesting.

The Friendly Beasts

I recently found a used book entitled Christmas Bells Are Ringing. From the markings I can tell that it was a school book. It is full of Christmas poems and was used to “enrich vocabulary”. Since it is Christmastime, I will be posting some of these poems from time to time. The first I will share is called The Friendly Beasts. The author is unknown.

The Friendly Beasts

Jesus our brother, strong and good,
Was humbly born in a stable rude,
And the friendly beasts around Him stood,
Jesus our brother, strong and good.

“I,” said the donkey, shaggy and brown,
“I carried His mother up hill and down,
I carried her safely to Bethlehem town;
I,” said the donkey, shaggy and brown.

“I,” said the cow, all white and red,
“I gave Him my manger for His bed,
I gave Him my hay to pillow His head,
“I,” said the cow, all white and red.

“I,” said the sheep, with curly horn,
“I gave Him my wool for His blanket warm,
He wore my coat on Christmas morn;
“I,” said the sheep, with curly horn.

“I,” said the dove, from the rafters high,
“Cooed Him to sleep, my mate and I,
We cooed Him to sleep, my mate and I;
I,” said the dove, from the rafters high.

And every beast, by some good spell,
In the stable dark was glad to tell,
Of the gift he gave Immanuel,
The gift he gave Immanuel.

What a pretty picture this poem creates :)
