Hectic

Okay GW you got me! Here you’ve been a good girl making sure that you keep updated on your blogs while I totally ignored the computer this weekend. I didn’t mean to and I didn’t want to, but this was THE busiest weekend that we’ve had in forever.

Friday night my sister, her husband, and my aunt went to see The Passion of The Christ leaving my parents to baby sit the twins. Since they baby sit literally every night, I thought it would be nice if we went over to their house to help. We ended up staying there until the movie was over and they had come home. By then it was going on 10:00, so we came home and watched TV shows as a family that we had taped.

Saturday, my parents took us to a salvage warehouse where everything is incredibly cheap. We bought new handles, still in the package, for the kitchen doors and drawers (currently we have none) for only $1 each. Normally these would sell for $3 at a regular “home” store. We only spent just over $25 for all the handles we’ll need.

When we got back home we had to do the grocery shopping. Luckily I had made out a list Friday afternoon, so I knew exactly what we needed. Once we got home, after rushing to put everything away, we quickly dressed to go see the musical Oklahoma! at Leeds Center for the Arts here in Winchester. Never having seen the movie, I had no idea what to even expect. The play started at 8:00, so we decided that we would go out to eat afterwards. Boy, were we wrong! Little did we know that this was a three hour play!!! We came straight home right afterwards and it was almost 11:30. Ashley had a bowl of Fruit Loops cereal for dinner!

I have to say though, the play was wonderful. The singers/actors have amazing talent and should definitely pursue careers, not just locally, but on a bigger scale. The scenery was remarkable as were the costumes. Plus, it’s a great story! Now, I’ll have to rent the movie.

Today was my dad’s 52nd birthday, so after church we invited the family over to celebrate by having a cookout. We had hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, deviled eggs, baked beans, and potato chips. The weather was perfect and climbed over 60 degrees; almost unheard of considering it is the end of February! We had cake and ice cream and then it was time to go back to church. Ashley sang in front of the church with the praise group. There were about ten of them altogether and they did an impressive job. They sang two upbeat songs to start off the service and get us in the mood. It was a fun time!
So, here I am now. The weekend is over and I am tired. We accomplished a lot, I just know that Kevin and I didn’t get that personal time that we normally enjoy on the weekends. There was no movie renting and we really didn’t get to just put our feet up. Maybe next weekend ….

By the way, GW, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO YOU!!! You’ll have to post about where you went in Columbus. Kevin lived there for a little while when he was going to DeVry, but I have never been.

Kingdom King

In this week’s TV Guide there is an article about StephenKing’s upcoming show entitled “Kingdom Hospital”. There are supposed to be fourteen episodes in all which will begin airing on March 3rd and continue every Wednesday thereafter. This show sounds twisted, psychological, and creepy enough for me to get into. It should be very interesting.

TV Guide also listed what they thought were the 5 best and the five worst Stephen King films. I have to say that I disagreed with both lists. Very importantly and something that should not be forgotten or taken lightly is the fact that books are almost always 99.9% better than the movies they represent.

Here are TV Guide’s 5 best Stephen King films:

1. Carrie
2. Salem’s Lot
3. The Shawshank Redemption
4. The Shining (Jack Nicholson version)
5. Stand by Me

My top 5 list would go like this:

1. Rose Red
2. The Shining (Jack Nicholson version)
3. The Green Mile
4. Misery
5. The Shawshank Redemption

Here are TV Guide’s worst Stephen King films:

1. Dreamcatcher
2. Graveyard Shift
3. The Langoliers
4. The Shining (TV version)
5. Maximum Overdrive

My worst three goes like this (sorry, I haven’t seen everything, so these are the only ones that I am sure I did not enjoy):

1. Pet Sematary
2. Carrie
3. Christine

What TV Guide failed to give was a “best book” list.
Here are my favorite books:

1. Apt Pupil – This short story is hands down my favorite. I think the realness of it; that things like this really do go on is what hooked me. It was enough to keep me thinking for days.
2. The Green Mile – If you’ve seen the movie, then you’ve pretty much read the book. This is one of the 1% that truly depicts what the book is really about. But, if you’re a reader like I am, you’ll want to actually read it first.
3. Pet Sematary – Okay, I know how bad this movie was, but the book is excellent. The whole time I was reading it, I was also looking over my shoulder to make sure that nothing was coming after me! It was very chilling and thought provoking.
4. The Shining – This is one of those books that play mind games with you. Did I just hear something? Did that just move? Those are some of the thoughts I had while reading this book. It was totally enthralling and exciting. I was scared to death of what I was going to read next, but I had to keep reading it anyway and in some sick way, I enjoyed being scared.
5. The Stand – This was a great story about good versus evil. What side would you have chosen? It brings up some interesting points.
6. The Mist – This was one of Stephen King’s first short stories that I ever read. I can remember at the end of the story, my mouth agape thinking, “They have to make a movie out of this one.” If they did it right and true to the story it would be awesome!
7. The Shawshank Redemption – Yes, this was a great movie, but the book was around first. So, if you haven’t read the book, you need to. It is actually a short story in a book called Different Seasons. My #1 pick, Apt Pupil is also in this same book.
8. Desperation – This book was about a town in the Nevada desert where very bad things take place; very surprising bad things. **Side note: When I finish a book, I always write my name, the date I finished, and a one word comment (IE: excellent, very good, etc.) inside the front cover. I finished this book on April 3, 1998. I think it may be time to pick it up again ;)
9. Misery – I loved the film with Kathy Bates, and even though I own this movie, I still think that you can picture something twice as bad in your own mind as what can be portrayed on the screen. This is one of those books where you picture something quite worse than what the movie gives.
10. I can’t stop at just ten, so I’ll name the rest of my four favorites and say that they all tied for tenth place. Here goes: Dolores Claiborne, Needful Things, Little Sisters of Eluria (short story), and last but certainly not least, The Long Walk (short story). All of these are too wonderful to not mention.

Believe it or not, there are many Stephen King books that I still have not read. Cujo, Firestarter, and Hearts in Atlantis are just a few. I do plan to read all of the Gunslinger books. I haven’t read any to date, but I would rather wait until they are all out so that I don’t have to wait one minute between books. I just read on the website that the last two books will have an earlier than planned release date. One will be on June 8th and the other on September 21st. Maybe around October I will begin a new journey with the Gunslinger.

Don't Get Offended ...

Lynne’s latest post entitled “Don’t Fence Me In!” reminds me of my own neighbor/barrier story. I’ll tell you mine, but you still need to read Lynne’s. I completely agree with the way she handled things. Sometimes people think that they are too good or that their animals are too good to obey the laws of simple consideration.

Okay now for my story. We have a strip of grass about 4 feet wide that runs between our house and our neighbor’s house. This is a shared piece of property. She would mow her half and we would mow ours. (These people do not live there anymore by the way.) Anyway, the woman loved to mow the grass. It didn’t matter if it needed it or not, she mowed EVERY freaking weekend. It drove me nuts to be quite honest. Her husband was from England, so I’m surprised that he didn’t stop her. The reason I say that is because I have watched enough BBC America to know that the people over there don’t cut their grass near as often as we do. Maybe it has something to do with the amount of rain they get. They would have to mow constantly to keep it as short as we expect it to be over here. Really, it’s a shame too because they have beautiful grass and we could learn a lesson or two from them!

So … a few years back we were in a drought. It hadn’t rained and the forecaster said that it wouldn’t rain again for at least ten days. Being in a drought already and then hearing there wasn’t going to be rain for another ten days was a big blow. The grass looked horrid. It wasn’t the bright, vibrant green that you’re used to seeing and we were not allowed to water it. It had turned a yellowish color and was stagnant. Why would it grow with no water to make it flourish?

Since the lady next door mowed every weekend she decided that she would start mowing our half of the strip. I’m sure it killed her that we only mowed every two to three weeks and she wanted it to look uniform between the two houses.

Up until this time we were great friends. We would do anything that the other asked. I took care of their pets on many occasions; even for a week at a time when they would travel back to Leicester. They would always bring back presents. I especially loved the Nestle Milky Bars. You can’t get those over here! We exchanged Christmas presents every year and I met his and her parents and family. I particularly liked his family. They were so friendly!

Anyhow, it was during the drought and I knew that she was going to be mowing so I emailed her a note asking her to please not mow our half of the strip. I told her what the forecaster had said and that I appreciated her doing this, but we didn’t want it mowed this particular week. I was extremely nice about it.

Well, you would have thought I had slapped her in the face. She was madder than a wet hen and sent an email back saying that she didn’t know that my two feet meant so much.
After this, we never talked again really. It took months before she would even say hello. Not long after this, they moved. They still live in Winchester, but way out in the country where they won’t be bothered by anyone. As with Lynne, this incident clouded our relationship and it was my entire fault. That Christmas there were no cards or presents exchanged. It felt very awkward.

Had I known that she would take things so personally, I would have never said anything. But, who would have known that grass would hurt someone’s feelings so much? With Lynne and her story of the dog poop – that couldn’t be avoided no matter what! It’s just their tough luck that they got offended. It was offensive to Lynne to have the poop at her front door!

I'm Learning

Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. That statement couldn’t be truer about my ebay auctions right now. Last July before school started, I looked at the children’s clothes on ebay and there were tons of bids. Right now, we have four different auctions open on clothes and not one bid has been placed.

I think it is totally my fault though. #1: I am trying to sell winter clothes when spring is upon us and #2: I believe that people were buying in July because they wanted school clothes. Now that school is already in session, people already have what they need. Unless they live in Minnesota I guess they don’t need winter clothing right now either. I have learned my lesson.

Schuller And Pierce

I love the Hour of Power with Dr. Robert Schuller. I’ve gotten to the point that I can’t wait to turn it on the TV on Sunday mornings. We get up at 9:30, so by the time I tune in it’s time for the sermon. I never get to see the special singing or guests, but I think I will set the alarm for 9:00 this coming Sunday so that I can watch it all. I’m almost positive that they said James Caviezel would be there. He’s the one who plays the part of Jesus in Mel Gibson’s new movie The Passion of the Christ. It should be very interesting to say the least. You can go to this Map to see if The Hour of Power is shown in your area. From what I can see, it is a commonly known program known far and wide. They even show in the Middle East! Lynne, let me know if you’ve ever seen this program and what you think :)

This isn’t a new show for me, just one that I have recently reconnected with since we’ve been going to church on Sunday morning. I think I first started watching Dr. Schuller when I was about thirteen. He has written many books that I’m sure are wonderful too. I’ll have to look for some of those.

Let me tell you about another wonderful person. This one my mother found for me. Her name is Chonda Pierce and she is a Christian comedian. You can get her videos online at her site and on ebay. I’ve seen two of her videos so far and my favorite was called Chonda Pierce: Four-Eyed Blonde. She has a way of being funny, and moving at the same time. You have to be sure to watch after the credits roll though because as far as I have seen there is always a little extra at the very end. These are movies that can be bought and shared with friends. They are very entertaining.

Tiffany

We have lived in this house for almost eight years. It took us about four years before we decided to make it our own by painting the walls the color we wanted. To date, every room has been painted except for the utility room (where the washing machine and dryer are) and the kitchen. Since we moved in the kitchen has been an eye sore, but we never knew what in the world to do with it.

With the other rooms in the house now being in our taste and looking so good, it makes the kitchen look doubly unattractive. To make things worse, the kitchen is the first room that you see upon entering our humble dwelling. Most houses start you off in the living room. Not ours! You walk into a short, narrow entryway, look left and there is the kitchen in all its glory. This is another reason why I hate for people to pop in unannounced. Anything that we cook can really be smelled from the front door and the mess can also be clearly seen. Speaking of unannounced guests, you have to read Lynne’s latest post. It is too funny! She understands me so well.

Okay, back to the kitchen. We have finally decided what we want to do with it. It will be bold and colorful and I hope in the end – beautiful. I will take before and after pictures, but don’t expect anything too soon. This is going to be a “work in progress” for a while. The first things we are changing this weekend are the lights. There were three of the ugliest lights you have ever seen in there! None of them matched or were even in the same family. They were just hideous! Today we went to Lowe's and bought the lights that we had chosen last weekend. We bought two of the ones in the picture below. One will go over the sink and the other is in the middle of the room.
1tiffany.jpg
This is the main light that goes over the table.
3tiffany.jpg
They should be beautiful and much easier on the eyes!

A Good Deed

I need to give kudos to the Winchester Police Department. The chief himself is out every morning directing traffic at the high school along with another officer. I have seen them out in pouring rain and frigid snow and I have no doubt that they will be out sweating this summer. If they weren’t directing the traffic entering and leaving the high school, I can’t even imagine how many wrecks there would be. We only have one high school so that means there are a lot of kids and a lot of traffic. Not to mention all the teens who have just gotten their license to drive. They really scare me sometimes!

I don’t think this is necessarily part of their jobs either. I know that they have to direct traffic if a light goes out or there is a wreck, but I don’t think they have to be out at the high school every day. I really believe that they do it out of the goodness of their hearts. I know that I’m not the only one that appreciates it :)

Do You Take Beetlejuice ...

Okay, it’s been a bit since I’ve seen a news story this weird. Woman Marries Dead Boyfriend You have to read it to believe it.

I think this destroys the sanctity of marriage. People think so little of marriage anyway, so let’s just start marrying dead people; that will make things better!

I wonder if there was some monetary reason for the marriage. If not, she should have left things as they were.

Hey! I just realized something, this is like the movie Beetlejuice. Whoever would have guessed that it would really happen?!

Giant's Bread

I have to mention a wonderful, haunting book that I just finished. It was Giant’s Bread by Agatha Christie, writing as Mary Westmacott. Of her non-mystery books, this is my favorite thus far. The story is about a boy, his childhood home, friends, and the women in his life. It was astounding, utterly surprising and magnificent. I have to admit, I rushed through it because I didn’t want to put it down, and now I wish it wasn’t over. I suppose there are many things in ones life like this.

Happy Anniversary To Me!

Today is the first year anniversary of my blog! YEA! Looking back through the past year, it seems amazing that we did so much. My memory is horrific, so this is a great way for me to store up some memories … and it saves a lot of paper too :) Below is one of my favorite jokes. You may have heard it before, but it’s still funny time and time again.

THE PRICE OF A BRAIN
Relatives gathered in the waiting room of a hospital as their family member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber.
"I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news," he said as he surveyed the worried faces. "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, very risky but it is the only hope. "Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the brain yourselves."
The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a great length of time, someone asked, "Well, how much does a brain cost?"
The doctor quickly responded, "$5,000 for a male brain, and $200 for a female brain."
The moment turned awkward. Men in the room tried not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked. A man, unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, "Why is the male brain so much more?"
The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, "It's just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the female brains, because they've actually been used."

Beauty Tips

Below is a poem written by Audrey Hepburn when she was asked to share her "beauty tips." It was read at her funeral years later.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.
You will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

I Think He's Turning Japanese

Andrew is learning to speak Japanese! He did very well in Spanish last semester, but I’m wondering if taking the two back to back will be confusing. This Japanese class is a special after school class and was only offered to a certain amount of people. I am flattered that Andrew was one of the chosen few. Now he needs to live up to expectations!

On to another topic: I think my car may be on its last leg, or tire. I have a 96’ Saturn that has over 105,000 miles on it and I think the poor thing is just tired. Get it? TIRED! Okay, bad joke. Anyway, this car is paid off. I put gas in it, make repairs when something goes wrong, and get the oil changed and that’s it. But here lately, getting it repaired doesn’t seem to do any good. Everything is so old and in such bad shape, that everything needs fixing. I keep thinking maybe if I wait a little longer, it will fix itself. Kevin says that cold weather is hard on cars, so then I think, maybe if I just wait until it gets warmer I’ll see if it runs any better. Honestly, we need to be looking for something now. I would love an SUV of some sort, but I know that we can’t afford the monthly payments. I think I’ll be keeping the Saturn for a long, long time.

Obituary

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend by the name of Common Sense who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valued lessons as Knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, spilled it in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his Wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

*Try to gain a few pounds.

*You're flossing too much.

*You can retire right now.

*I think you need a smaller size, Ma'am.

*Let's go to lunch. I'll treat.

*No, Sir, I'm not a telemarketer. I'm with the prize division, and you've just won a new car.

*No, I don't think we should get married. In fact, let's keep separate residences. I'll pay all the bills for both of them.

*I'm with the IRS. We found an error on your return. It seems we owe you a lot of money.

*No, your check didn't bounce. In fact, you have plenty of money in your account.

*I know we just met, but would you consider going to the Bahamas with me for two weeks?

*You've lost weight!

*Your house sold for twice what you thought it would!

That Was Fast!

Wow! I never in my wildest dreams imagined that Kevin would get things moved over so swiftly! If you have never viewed my photo galleries, they are on the right side bar under my ebay auctions. The pictures are of random things that were of interest to me. You can now comment on the pictures. This feature was not available to me before. My digital camera is old so don’t expect too much.

This summer, when everything isn’t gray or dead, I plan to take some pictures around town or of places we like to visit. There are some very interesting buildings here in Winchester.

Space! I Need Space!

Most of the pictures on this site will not be accessible to view for a bit. My current web server is too small to hold all of the info I want it to, so I’m moving on. I’ll have my own domain name, and it will hold TONS of the pictures that I just love to share. And Gardenwife, there’s good news for you too! When you return to make comments, it will actually remember you. Imagine that!

Now don’t start looking for it too soon. Kevin says that it will probably take him a week to get everything moved over and ready to view. I will let you know as soon as it’s ready though! For the time being, keep checking in here for the latest. I am excited :)

A Daughter's A Daughter

I just finished reading A Daughter's a Daughter by Mary Westmacott (Agatha Christie). It was wonderful to say the least. I adore her murder mysteries, but I’m really passionate about her normal, everyday writings. This story is about a daughter who disapproves of the man her mother wants to remarry and what effects it has on their relationship.

There was a saying that I love in the book that many of you have probably heard, but I had not: “A son’s a son till he gets him a wife. But a daughter’s a daughter all your life.” I think that statement holds much truth in it.

Interesting T-Shirts

I got this in an email today: A Washington Post columnist runs a column each summer listing interesting t-shirts observed at the Ocean City, Maryland beach. Here are a few:

*I childproofed my house, but they still get in.
*On the front- 60 is not old. On the back- If you're a tree.
*I'm still hot. It just comes in flashes.
*At my age, "getting lucky" means finding my car in the parking lot.
*My reality check just bounced.
*Life is short, make fun of it.
*I'm not 50. I'm $49.95 plus tax.
*I need somebody bad. Are you bad?
*Buckle up. It makes it harder for the aliens to snatch you from your car.
*I'm not a snob. I'm just better than you are.
*It's my cat's world. I'm just here to open cans.
*Earth is the insane asylum of the universe.
*Keep staring....I may do a trick.
*We got rid of the kids. The cat was allergic.
*Dangerously under-medicated.
*My mind works like lightning. One brilliant flash, and it's gone.
*Every time I hear the word "exercise", I wash my mouth out with chocolate.
*Cats regard people as warm-blooded furniture.
*Live your life so that when you die, the preacher will not have to tell lies at your funeral.
*In God we trust. All others we polygraph.
*I may be fat but you're ugly. I can diet!

Did You See That?

We didn’t watch the Super Bowl. We’re not really sports fans, so we didn’t watch. We did, however tune in for the half time show. I thought it was pretty mediocre - and then it happened. Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson were singing together and she was grinding her hips against his groin area. This surprised me since I wouldn’t have thought that they even knew each other. At the end of the song, he reached up and grabbed one of the cups of her shirt off. There it was in all its glory: Janet Jackson’s boob. Kevin and I went back and forth about this all night. I said it was her boob and he said that it was a pastie. I checked with the BBC because I knew that they would show the actual photo and I wasn’t disappointed. If you click on that link it takes you to a photo gallery of the half time show from last night. Janet’s boob is on page six.

They’re claiming that it was a costume malfunction. Yea, right! It looks as though she has spikes through her nipple. Who could wear something like that all the time under their clothes? Wouldn’t that be painful? And wouldn’t it show through normal shirts? No, this was planned. I think they probably think it’s very funny. The thing is: you would think that she would be on her best behavior since her brother has been in the news so much lately. Or was that the point; to take the focus off of him and put some on herself? If more publicity is what she wanted, I think she got it.

Shopping Deals

Yesterday we spent the day shopping at Kohls. They were having an 80% off sale on all winter and overstocked items. I got some GREAT deals! I bought Ashley a Lizzie McGuire t-shirt for only $2.40! I also bought myself three sweaters. They had been around $40 each and I got them for $7.40 each! I bought a ton more – way too much to mention. A person could go crazy with prices that low. I would go back today, but I have a turkey in the oven so I can’t afford to be gone that long.
