New In The Gallery

Here’s what you’ve been waiting for: Kitchen Remodel Spring Break 2004. That is the direct link to the pics or you can always get to them via the photo gallery. Kevin realized that even though our digital camera died, we could take pictures with our camcorder! We had never taken “pictures” on it. I am thrilled that he thought of this before we had gotten too far and I think they turned out great. Also know that you can click on each picture to enlarge it.

I don’t see how the people on Trading Spaces and Changing Rooms do it in two days. I really thought that if they could do it, we could too. I think it would have gone much quicker had the weather been better. We couldn’t paint the doors outside because it rained off and on the entire time. I know on the TV shows they normally have tents to work under. This is reality: two people getting older, a tight budget, and a small house. It takes at the minimum three days. We are going to enjoy the rest of spring break so much more now that the work is complete! Thanks to everyone for all of the encouraging words :)

Sneak Peek

Spring break started today. For those of you who don’t know, this is where your kids “get out of school free” for a week. YEA! Kevin and I started on the kitchen this afternoon. I took pictures on the regular camera and on the digital camera, but wouldn’t you just know it; our digital camera died. I don’t think it’s going to take any more pictures. Luckily I got a few before that happened. I guess when I get my regular roll developed, I’ll also get the pictures put on a CD and that way I can share the whole process with you :) We have much more to do, but this is what it looked like around 2:00 this afternoon.

White VS. Colored

While watching an episode of House Invaders on BBC America I noticed something in one of the bathrooms that I haven’t seen since childhood here in the US. Can you guess what that might be? Well I will tell you: colored toilet paper. It looked to be a peachy color.

I can remember having pink, blue, and green toilet paper. No matter what color your bathroom was decorated in, one of these colors was sure to match. I had often wondered why colored toilet paper wasn’t sold any longer, but had never actually investigated. I vowed to myself after seeing that pretty peachy paper on the BBC that I was going to get to the bottom of the colored paper mystery.

After much studying it seems that it is as hazardous to our health as asbestos or lead paint. Several websites I visited were written by women who said, “Say no to designer toilet paper”. They stated that using colored paper made them inherit vaginal itching and infections. Once they went back to the pure white paper, all symptoms stopped. Other sites stated that colored paper can irritate hemorrhoids, cause rectal itching or urinary tract infections. Hmm, now that’s a pleasant thought.

My question now is: why is colored paper still apparently being sold in England? Maybe it wasn’t actually peachy paper; it very well could have been that it looked peachy on television, but was really white. At any rate, I’m glad that I finally investigated and found out why the color disappeared.

Of Mice And Men

If you have never read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck then you are surely missing something. Short enough to be completed in two days this book packs a big punch. The range of emotions the reader experiences is astounding.

The book takes place in California and is about the life journey of two men; one who is of average intellect and the other who is dumb. The thrilling conclusion is enough to keep any sensitive person thinking for days about what came to pass.

World War II

While Andrew and Ashley had fun with their guests, Kevin and I sat down for a movie. It has been a few weeks since we have watched a movie together, so this was very nice, plus we didn’t have to worry too much about content.

So what did we view? The Pianist. I can honestly say that this is a brilliant film. It is about a Jewish pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman, who went through obstacle after obstacle in order to survive the Warsaw ghetto. Where Schindler's List mainly takes place in concentration camps, the pianist is left to survive in the ghetto.

When I picked it out, I didn’t have a clue what this movie was even about, but I am so glad that I saw it. The persecution that these people went through was horrendous. The Pianist was based on a true person and we all know that the story is true. With or without Wladyslaw Szpilman, this war really happened and should never be forgotten.

New Term

I just had to repeat an expression that I heard before it left my brain completely. Someone was talking to me today about the size of their duplex and said, “It’s not big enough to swing a cat.” I had never heard that term before and thought it was very unique. I’m sure there are a lot more that I haven’t heard!

Funnies

Here are a few jokes and a quote that my mom sent me in an email. I couldn’t help passing them on :)

The Substitute

The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to, after the worship service, ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building.
Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances."

During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected, and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up."
At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!

Quote

"Somebody has well said there are only two kinds of people in the world. There are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning, Lord," and there are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good Lord, its morning.”

Bible

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!" His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means?"
The son replied, "I do know!"
"Okay, said his father. "So, son, what does the Bible mean?"
"That's easy, Daddy. It stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.'"

Clear, Sunny and 73 Degrees!

Fourth post: I know. There are just sooo many interesting things to type about this sunny Thursday afternoon.

Now, I know in the last post I sent you over to Gardenwife's Plot. Well, this time I’m sending you over to Lynne’s blog to read her post entitled “Get offa my land”. There you will read a true story that can teach us all a lesson. It is extremely amusing and you will enjoy it! Trust me!

Relevant News

This has been a worry of parents for many years now: Kids Caught With Drugs In School. What disturbs me the most is that this child is only 5 years old! Most of the time I believe that the parent’s can’t be blamed for their child’s problems, but when the child in question is five years old it’s a different story. What kind of influence have they had on this child? I think we all know.

In other news: Grave robbers make off with jewels. This happened right here in Kentucky! This woman had been dead for five years. I don’t want to even imagine the condition of the body. How in the world could a person bring themselves to take the jewelry off of her?! Let me just say this: I do not want to be buried with any jewelry on. I don’t even want to have my wedding rings on. Those can be kept by another family member. I don’t see any valid reason why it should be buried with me. I certainly can’t use it in Heaven and by the time I am dead, it will have served me well.

Criminal Record?!

This is an interesting news story for you dog lovers: Woman gets criminal record for petting dog

Actually, I can see both sides of this. If a stranger were in my back yard giving my dog water (if I had a dog), I’m sure I would get pretty miffed. How do I know that it’s ONLY water and that person isn’t up to something or isn’t crazy?

Then again, I don’t think I would have called the police, but you never know. I guess it all depends on how riled up things got.

Cobwebs On A Cut

I am currently reading an Agatha Christie book entitled A Caribbean Mystery. In it there have been several things that have surprised me. #1: It was said that when a character in the book was a young child, she used to put “cobwebs on a cut”. I have never heard of such a thing, but if any of you savvy people out there know the story behind this I would love to hear it!

The second thing referred to is “tooth powder”. Now, I am used to paste and gel, but not powder. I have heard that baking soda is good to use on your teeth. Could this be what they were referring to when they said tooth powder?

I don’t know if they have a show like this in the UK, but here in the US Fear Factor is big! If you click on that link you will see a pretty sick picture of what the contestants had to get mouthfuls of tonight. On the left, there is a list of clickable gross-out stunts that the contestants had to go through. It made me sick just watching tonight, but I loved every minute of it :)

Women Only/Men Only

When someone gets married I don’t know of a club, church, or any organization that would want to break that unity up. As a matter of fact, the church in particular strives to keep marriages together. So here is my question: why have meetings that are only for one sex or the other? Why have meetings that are only for men or only for women? This happens at every church that I know of, so I am not just picking on one. I also know of female comedians or movie stars that have “girl’s night out”. There are clubs that will only let men be members. At most churches there is a club just for women. I just don’t get it.

Our pastor was preaching Sunday morning and he was telling about how men and women just don’t think alike. I’m sure that’s true in some cases. No one is going to see exactly like someone else 100% of the time. I can’t imagine a woman seeing 100% eye to eye with another woman all the time. We’re all different and that’s a good thing. But, is this the reason for having same sex clubs and meetings; because we supposedly see things differently?

I was invited by a friend to a women’s only meeting at church. I have no idea what goes on, but I’m sure they all have a great time. But do I want to go? No, I don’t. I truly have no desire to go to a function that only allows one particular sex. I love being with my husband. We try to do everything possible together. If it were a meeting that the both of us could attend, I would make sure that we went. But why would I want to leave him at home while I went off somewhere else? Things like that just don’t happen in this house. He’s my partner, my rock, and the best friend that I have in this whole world and I want to share everything with him. And guess what?! He would enjoy going with me. He would enjoy a comedian or a hearing a woman talk just as much as I would, so why should he be excluded? We enjoy the same things and feed off of each others reactions which makes whatever we’re doing an even better experience.

Does anyone else feel this way or understand this?

Scary Green Veins

Ashley better be glad that today wasn’t Mothers Day here in the US. I’m wearing a V-neck sweatshirt and she said, “Ooooh, mommy! You can see your veins!” Kids … sometimes they say the darndest things!

Oh by the way, yesterday I posted on the first day of spring and how nice it was. I just wanted to let everyone know that today it was spitting snow and a very cold 34 degrees!

Holidaze

Today when I looked at my calendar I noticed that it is “Mothering Sunday” in the UK. Okay, Lynne or Miss L or anyone else, is this the same thing as Mothers Day here in the US; a day where you buy your mother a gift, spend time with her, do something special for her, or just thank her for giving birth to you? Different holidays around the globe are so interesting!

*Update*
I just read Lynne’s post for today. It does sound as if Mothering Sunday is the same as Mother’s Day. Cheers!

The Sound Of Silence

Today was the first day of spring and there seems to be a vast difference in the look of the land already. Our weeping willow tree is budding fast and the grass is turning green again. It is all very exciting. You can actually hear the birds singing. In the winter we get so used to the peace that when we do hear the birds, it seems an oddity. I would swear that some are already pregnant because they are so big.

Another oddity that you forget about during the winter is thunder. We had a very hard rain this afternoon and some thunder along with it. Like the birds, it’s just not something that you hear during the winter months. I wonder what other noises I’ve forgotten about. Hmmm.

Nasty

We watched Primetime Thursday last night and they had a very interesting segment on germs in the home. They had Dr. Philip Tierno go into a normal home with q-tips for testing just to see how clean this family really was. If you missed it, just click on the link above and read about it.

This link will help you see What You Can Do to Keep Your House Clean. What I think is most interesting is that Dr. Tierno stated, “People don't realize that in the home, 50 percent to 80 percent of food-borne illnesses are contracted by items that are handled in the home. And 60 percent to 65 percent of all colds are contracted in the home.”

If you’re like me, you consider your home a safe haven from germs. According to this, your home is just as bad if not worse than everywhere else. I think I need to get Dr. Tierno’s book The Secret Life of Germs : Observations and Lessons from a Microbe Hunter.
Now I must go wash my bed sheets …

Anyone Up For A Swim?

**To get the full benefit of this post, you must have read the previous one.

I believe that I was in the seventh grade when a girlfriend invited me to her birthday pool party at a place called Breakers Swim & Tennis Club here in Winchester. Her parents had actually rented the whole place out for a few hours so that we could have it all to ourselves. There were probably only eight girls there if that.

We swam for a while. Breakers had a slide, a wave pool, and a regular swimming pool and we had our pick between any of them. It was great! The birthday girl’s parents ordered pizza for our lunch and there’s no telling how much I ate. Swimming makes you hungry, you know.

Right after we ate all of us girls jumped back into the regular swimming pool. We were all in a circle, bobbing up and down in the water, and diving to the bottom. Very, very suddenly it just came up. All of that pizza that I had just eaten was floating on top of the water all around me. One look at that and the girls swam for safety away from me. I was mortified, but also quickly got out of the pool. I don’t remember reporting it to any people who worked there; we just stayed out of that pool for the remainder of the party. I felt just terrible, like I had ruined everything. But, it seemed since there was another pool and slide to play in it really didn’t matter.

That’s my own puking story. I hope you liked it :)

Remember When ...

Do you remember that little kid in your class at school who threw up all over the place? I would bet that you remember it like it was yesterday. Well, today that little kid was Ashley. She was sitting at her desk and threw up all over the desk and the floor which is carpeted by the way. I bet that was a pleasant sight and smell. I’m sure the class and teacher were reminded of her all day long as they walked in and out of the room.

I took her temperature before she left because the previous night it had been high. It was perfectly normal, so I figured she would be okay to go to school. Well, the puking incident kind of proved me wrong. I took her to the doctor and she has strep throat. She’s not allowed to go to school tomorrow which will give her a three day weekend to recuperate.

The Chalk Garden

Last night Ashley and I watched a movie from 1964 called The Chalk Garden. Hayley Mills who starred in The Parent Trap also starred in this movie. It was a psychological thriller and very enjoyable. She looks so pretty in this movie. She reminds me a lot of Hilary Duff. I could tell that Ashley really enjoyed it too. It was nice being able to watch something without having to worry about the content.

Dimwitted Logic

Ashley brought a note home from school today. You will find what it said below. I am typing it exactly, including caps locked, and the underlined sentences.

AVOID HAVING LATEX IN THE SCHOOL
**Blank Blank Elementary will be welcoming a new student to our school on Wednesday, March 16th. This student has an LATEX ALLERGY. In order to maintain a safe environment for our new student we need to ask that parents make a conscience effort not to send any latex balloons to the school. If you desire to send your child something for their birthday, etc. please refrain from sending anything latex, especially balloons. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

**I’m not giving the name of my child’s school.
Yes, they got the date wrong on the note. Today is Tuesday the 16th. The person who wrote the note also put “an” latex allergy in the second sentence, whereas I would have said “a” latex allergy.

So, what’s the point of me giving this information? The point is that the whole thing is asinine! There are probably over three hundred students in this school and we can’t send balloons because of one child. Give me a break! This kid needs to be home-schooled or in a special place where no latex is used. I guess everyone is just supposed to sit back and suffer because of this one kid. Yea, THAT really seems FAIR.

Clean Pee?

Have you ever heard of clean pee? I know that I hadn’t until last night. We were at my sister’s house and her dog, Sampson peed on the steps. Ashley accidentally sat in that spot and got pee on her jeans. We brought her home to change before leaving for church. She said, “Do you know what Aunt Jennifer said to me?”
“No, what did she say?” I answered. “She told me not to worry about that pee. That it was Sampson’s pee so it was clean.” We both rolled our eyes and laughed.

The Assignment

**To understand this post you need to have read the previous one first.

Lynne asked in the comments in my last post what our assignment was. Here it is in all its glory: We are studying how to have good communication within your marriage.

We had to answer the following questions alone and then get together and discuss them:
1. How would you rate yourself on a scale of one (poor) to five (excellent) as a clear communicator? As a sincere listener? As an appropriate responder?
2. How would you rate your spouse on a scale of one (poor) to five (excellent) as a clear communicator? As a sincere listener? As an appropriate responder?
3. What do you appreciate about the conversation skills of your spouse?
4. What do you need to work on most in improving your communication skills?
5. What’s one concern in your marriage that you’d like to discuss with your spouse before this date is over?

Okay, after you answer these questions, you then “interact as a couple” and do the following:

1. Go over the questions above. Be open, kind, and understanding as you address difficult issues.
2. Tell each other about the concerns you listed under question 5. Tackle those concerns one at a time, following the components of communication learned in this week’s lesson. Be sure to speak, listen, and respond at the appropriate times. When it’s your time to give feedback, ask questions to help clarify your understanding. Summarize what you think you’ve heard, and ask if you understood correctly. Before you leave each concern, be sure to ask, “What do you need most from me right now?”
3. Wrap up your time together with prayer, committing to practice good communication skills within your marriage in the coming weeks.

Kevin and I talk constantly, but there are apparently couples who don’t communicate enough or when they do it’s with spite or hateful words. The lesson says that in order to have good communication you need to:
1. Express yourself clearly
2. Listen
3. Respond appropriately

I get the feeling that most of the couples in this class haven’t been married very long and are still working things through. Last night was interesting also. Some couples are still having conversations about the toilet seat: up or down, the proper way to put the toilet paper back on the roll, etc. It’s just interesting for us to sit back and listen.

What? Did You Say Something?

On Sunday nights at church there are several options for adults. You can either: stay in the sanctuary and listen to the sermon, go to a women’s only class, or go to a couple’s class. Kevin and I want to stay together, so the women’s only class was immediately ruled out. We stayed and listened to the sermon one week and went to the couple’s class the next.

We decided that we would attend the couple’s class from now on. I have to be honest here and brag a little at the same time. Kevin and I do not need this class. In fact, our teachers are great, but I truly believe that we could teach this class ourselves. We never argue and there aren’t any pressing issues that we disagree on; our marriage is rock solid. But, this is a fun class with fun people, plus its interesting hearing how so many different issues affect these marriages. We like to listen to what other people are going through and then we are even more thankful for each other and what we have.

Each week you are supposed to make a “date” with your spouse and complete the given assignment. Kevin and I really don’t have anything to work on during these assignments because they’re supposed to be helping you with issues that you may have. So, I put this week’s assignment off ….. until today. I thought that we would have a chance to look over it before going back to church tonight.

Jennifer, my sister has a birthday this Tuesday so in order to celebrate we went out to eat right after church this afternoon. I put the assignment in my purse thinking that Kevin and I could go over it at the table. Also, Jennifer and her husband missed class last week so I thought that we might get to discuss it. Wrong! We went to Damon’s Bar and Grille which has four big screen TV’s. Kentucky was in the SEC Tournament against Florida, so they were packed! My mom was sitting right across from me and I had to yell for her to be able hear me. I had no idea whatsoever that they would be playing the game at that volume. Then during the commercials they played music to get everyone riled up and cheering. When I told my mom and sister my plans to work on the assignment they had a good laugh. They had previously sat in the TV room and they knew better. Oh well, we did get to quickly go over everything with each other. When there isn’t anything to work on it goes pretty quickly. If I could suggest a class it would be one on "parenting teenagers". Now that's a class we could use!

By the way, just in case you’re curious: Kentucky won :)

Home Free

This past Sunday, I taped Trading Spaces: Home Free. Even if you’re not a fan of the regular Trading Spaces show, you should try watching this one to see what you think.

In Home Free they are doing what I always wanted them to do which was let the homeowners decide what the design will be, pick the colors, accessories, etc. We finally got to watch what I had taped and it is very good! There are eight couples competing against each other. They have the help of a designer and can ask them questions, get them to do work, etc. At the end of each episode on Sunday night, the viewers get to vote for their favorite couple/room. At the end, whichever couple wins, gets their mortgage paid off! Wow! Wouldn’t that be nice?! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to vote since we waited to watch the tape, but I plan on watching this week and voting. It’s a free call which makes it even easier!

Dream A Little Dream

It was morning and time to get up, get dressed and get everyone ready for school. Kevin and I wanted to just lie back down. The alarm had gone off and he was awake, he just kept sitting on the bed and not getting up and in the shower. I was the same way; droopy and slow moving. When I did finally start to get dressed, I decided that I didn’t like the outfit that I was wearing so I went into another closet and realized that there were clothes in there that I had forgotten about. I was so tired that I only wanted to lay my head down on the floor, but I knew that I had to get up. Just picking my head up was a horrible task. I ended up in jeans and a white t-shirt. There were clothes and toys all over the bedroom floor and I kept thinking: I still need to do Ashley’s hair. It was time for Kevin to leave and I hadn’t even begun to put my make-up on. Running to the bathroom, I told him that I wouldn’t have time to kiss him good-bye: I needed to get dressed. During all of this chaos, I looked across the street at the rental house only to see the man that lives there cutting down all of the bushes in front with a chainsaw. I hurried to the phone to call the owners of the house, but could get no answer. Then it was back to me running late and not being ready to go. I thought to myself, “This will be a cleaning day because there is STUFF everywhere!” The kids were going to be late for school!

Then Kevin woke me up. It totally freaked me out. I laid there for a minute thinking, “Wait. None of that really happened? I’m not halfway dressed or anything?”

I would like to know why I would have a dream like that. I’ll tell you right now. My life is completely the opposite of that dream. Things run pretty smoothly here in the mornings because I prepare the night before by laying clothes out for myself and Ashley and just getting things ready in general. Even Kevin chooses what he will wear each night.

Would any of you out there now like to play Joseph and interpret my dream for me? Why were things so overly chaotic?

Do Not Call

It is unfortunate, but we as a family have learned to wait for the answering machine to “pick up” so that we can hear who is calling. Even though we are on the “do not call” telemarketer list, we still get bugged. There are exceptions to that list like political solicitations and charities.

Once we hear a familiar voice, we then pick up the phone. A lot of people would ask: why not get caller ID? Well, the answering machine is FREE and caller ID is $2 or $3 per month. I’m frugal when it comes to some things and this is one of them.

Why am I bringing this up? Well, at exactly 9:50 PM the phone rang and I felt it was late enough (read: safe enough) to pick up the phone. Nope. It was a southern voice asking for Kevin. I asked who it was and she told me that her name was Jennifer and she was calling on behalf of (I don’t remember the name) tobacco company. I was surprised to say the least. I informed her, “It is very late here and we would appreciate your taking our number off of your call list.” I think I ticked her off. In her best southern drawl she informed me, “well, you won’t be gettin’ any mo coupons from us eithea!” and hung up.

Well, Miss Jennifer and your tobacco company, you think that we’ll be missing those coupons, but the joke is really on you. Kevin and I have not smoked since the summer of 2002. All of those coupons that you spend your precious money mailing to us every few months go straight into the garbage. Even though I take pleasure in your company throwing money away like this, I will enjoy even more not having so much junk mail.

By the way, for those of you who know us and call: If we are here and can get to the phone, we will pick up. There are sometimes circumstances that keep us from answering. The #1 reason for not answering is because we’re not here!!!

Marijuana And Montel

This news story was provided at TVGuide.com.

TALK SHOW TRAGEDY: An Oklahoma woman shot and killed her spouse on Feb. 24, when the couple argued over an episode of The Montel Williams Show about abusive husbands. Yes, really. Here's what happened: Teri Lynn and Cecil Carver of Rose, Okla., were reportedly smoking marijuana and watching TV in bed. She commented that he resembled the men on Montel. Cecil then hit Teri Lynn, fetched a handgun and fired a shot into their bed's headboard to express his displeasure at being called a violent partner. They struggled over the gun, and Cecil took a fatal bullet in the chest. Mrs. Carver hasn't been charged with a crime, however, since local police decided all evidence points to accidental death.

My Thoughts: There must have been major problems in their marriage way before this incident for something like this to have happened; smoking marijuana only being the tip of the ice burg, I’m sure. There’s no telling what violence went on in their home before that no one even knew of.

Icky!

It’s official. I’m sick. I did however make it back to church last night. I took my meds and was able to make it the whole hour and a half without sniffling, sneezing, or coughing. YEA!

Today has been a literal hell. I am raw from my nose to my mouth. I have blown and wiped so many times that my skin is now the color of a ripe strawberry – and no, that’s not a good thing!

Earlier I tried to rub some Vicks - VapoRub Ointment on the tip of my nose and it felt like it was on fire. I couldn’t get that stuff off quick enough. It’s not good for raw skin – remember that! Since that didn’t work, I did the next best thing. I stuck my nose up to the jar and sniffed forever. Vicks is strong stuff and I couldn’t smell a thing, so you know I’m pretty stopped up! Pray that I’ll be much, much better tomorrow ;)

On another note: I have to mention GW’s post entitled “Missy Sandnose, don't make me scream...”. When you don’t have dogs you forget some of their, uh …. Habits. Warning: Do not drink or eat while reading that. LOL!

Quiet

It is unusually quiet around our house right now. With everyone at home, there is normally a multitude of noises. Right now the only sound is my clicking on the keyboard. Andrew is playing his Game Boy Advance and Ashley is doing something in her room behind a closed door. Kevin is lying on the bed reading and here I am typing to you.

Ashley got sick at school around noon on Friday. The nurse called me and I picked her up. She had no fever she just continued to throw up. Later on that evening she sat up and had some Sprite and crackers. The bug that she had didn’t even last 24 hours. She was fine all day Saturday and is still fine today. Whatever it was, must have wanted out of her system pretty bad ;)

Now Kevin and I both think that we have sinus infections. We are taking OTC medicines for this, so hopefully that will help. Now that we are going to church on a normal basis, I just hate to miss. I’m hoping that I feel like going back tonight.

Pig

This week has been I Love to Read Week at Ashley’s school. Today was book character day. Ashley decided that she wanted to be the pig in the book, If You Give A Pig A Pancake by Laura Numeroff. Here she is this morning:

They had a parade with all of the book characters and every participant received a pencil and certificate.

Phone Etiquette

This is a subject that I believe is skipped over far too often: phone etiquette. The things that people will do while they are on the phone actually amaze me. I think cordless phones are a wonderful invention however, I do not believe that they should travel with you into the bathroom. I have been in mid sentence with someone and in fact heard them relieve themselves while we were talking! Another devastating thing to hear is the toilet flush. Especially when you know it was the person with whom you were talking that just finished using it! Do I really need to be picturing these people on the toilet in my head? Mmmm, I don’t think so.

Another predicament: People who eat while on the phone. This one really agitates me. Why in the world would you put a whole slice of meat in your mouth and then pick up the phone and call me? Do I really need to hear you smacking like that? It’s enough to make a person sick.

And how about the screamers? You know the ones who scream at their kids or whoever is around while they’re on the phone with you. They tell you to, “Wait just a minute” and then they put the phone down and let loose. It’s hard to know what to say after that.

What about the “talk to everyone” people? I am guilty of this myself and need to work on it. These are the people who not only talk to the person on the phone, but also carry on a conversation with the person sitting in front of them (be it kids, husband, friend, etc.). It’s hard to ignore your child when they are asking you something while you are on the phone and it sometimes cannot be avoided, but 99% of the time, whatever they want can wait. It’s strange, but my 14 (almost 15) year old is the worst about this. It’s not only the phone though. I can be in mid sentence with someone and he’ll walk in the room and just start talking or asking me a question. It never occurs to him to wait a second, but I think all kids are like that at some point.

The TV watchers: You can be saying something and they’ll say, “Hold on a second” and you know they are watching TV!!! Call me back, tell me you’re busy, but don’t make me hang on while you’re watching TV!

And last, but not least there are the people who just can’t seem to let go. You say to them, “Okay, I need to go now” or “Okay, I’m getting off of here now” and they keep talking. When someone tells you they have to go, that’s exactly what it means or maybe they’re just tired of talking.

Don’t even get me started on cell phones …

SES= Scam Every So Often

My car drives me crazy! I was just thinking this morning while getting dressed how I hadn’t had any trouble out of my car for several weeks. I was very content with this knowledge and then BAM! Later on this morning while driving the kids to school the bright orange “Service Engine Soon” light comes on. I truly with all of my heart believe that this light only serves one purpose and that is to scare the living daylights out of the driver and worry them half to death.

Since everything in your car is run by a computer now, I believe that the mechanic programs that light to come on after a certain amount of time. That way, you’ll take it in to find out what’s wrong with it therefore giving them more business whether or not anything was really wrong. To prove this point even further: my dad had his light disconnected in one car and in another car put a dark piece of tape over the light so that he couldn’t see it whenever it came on. He has suggested that I do the same, but as you can see I haven’t. Now that dumb light is going to drive me batty!

Fried

I know this is trivial, but the new KFC commercials are driving me crazy. Now, we all know that KFC stands for Kentucky Fried Chicken, so why try to hide the fact or get around it? It tastes wonderful. I love it and eat it probably once a month, but it is fried. For years now they have gone by “KFC”. I think they want people to forget the fried part, so by just saying the initials it doesn’t remind you that you’re eating a bucket of fat.

Now the commercials are touting KITCHEN FRESH chicken. They show a man, presumably the husband, asking his wife, “What are you eating?” She replies, “Kitchen fried chicken.” To which he replies, “You mean KFC?” Those probably aren’t the exact words, but you get the gist of it. I just think the whole thing is stupid. Call it what it is: Kentucky Fried Chicken. No fast food is good for you, but don’t try to sugar coat it ;)
