Happy Halloween!
Saturday night was trick-or-treating for those of us in Winchester. The night started off with my neighbor showing me her belly. She is four months pregnant and hardly showing, but this pumpkin is very cute!
Ashley was originally the grim reaper, but that costume covered her entire face and she kept getting very hot so she decided to come home and change into another costume. This is her “Josie and the Pussycats” costume.
Here is the stash that she earned for all of her walking! We were all over town! My feet are feeling it now!

Fall Festival
Last night our church had a fall festival. There were many games including a cake walk, blow up slide, ring toss, football throw, balloon popping, and much, much more. Everything was free including the hotdogs, chips, popcorn, and drinks. Ashley came home with a bag full of candy and two goldfish. We had to get them a bowl and some food from Wal-Mart. I hope they live for a little while. I think it would crush her if they were to die too soon.
Anyway, she got her face painted with a picture of the Bible on it and she had lots of fun. Kevin and I enjoyed talking to all of our friends. It’s not often you see people out where you can really talk to them.
When we got home, Ashley put these glasses on that we got at the festival. She says that this is her “geeky look”.

Ballot
For those of you who live in Kentucky here is a site that will show you the election ballot for each county. I think it’s always good if you can get a good look at it prior to the election.

The Bird
Yesterday afternoon I heard something fluttering in the fireplace. I muted the television to get a better listen and didn’t hear anything. I blamed it on the wind. It was windy after all.
Jump to just a few minutes ago. I am out back with Guido waiting for him to use the bathroom when I hear something bang on the back door. It kind of freaked me out because no one is home but me. A few minutes later there was an even bigger bang. I walked up to the door with Guido and there sat Church. I figured he just wanted out so I turned around and continued my walk with Guido. When I came inside, Church was at the front door. Looking closer I saw that he had cornered a little bird.
I don’t know why, but this is about the fifth bird that we have been graced with since living here. Now I don’t mind looking at them in their cages at Pet Smart or way up in the trees, but I do not like them up close and in my house!
I called the only person that I knew I could count on to come immediately: my dad. I called him and he just laughed. He said, “Can’t you just throw a towel over him and take him outside?” Uh, no dad I cannot do that! I think I would scream the entire time! Anyway, dad came, put his gloves on, grabbed the bird, and let him free. Whew! I don’t need this kind of excitement! Lord, please keep your birds outside!

So True
I wish I knew who wrote this because they deserve lots of credit. This is brilliant!
The Ant and the Grasshopper
OLD VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.
The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!
MODERN VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.
CBS, NBC, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing, "It's Not Easy Being Green."
Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, "We shall overcome."
Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.
Tom Daschle & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Peter Jennings that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his "fair share."
Finally, the EEOC drafts the "Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act," retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.
Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients.
The ant loses the case.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow.
The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

Please Vote
I’ve had some questions regarding the voter’s guide that I posted on October 13th. The information for that post was sent to me via email, but can be found HERE. This site not only lists the presidential voter’s guide, it also lists voter’s guides for many states. I can’t imagine anyone being unsure of who to vote for this late in the game, but if you have doubts I would strongly suggest you check out that site.
I hope that everyone reading this will get out and vote next week. Kevin and the kids are off that day to make it even easier for us. Keep in mind that you aren’t allowed to gripe about the people in office unless you actually vote! I mean, you can gripe, but who will actually respect what you say?
I have noticed that MTV is really pushing young voters this time around. Even though they haven’t come right out and said whom they would like you to vote for, it’s obvious. The commercials are definitely pointed toward one candidate in particular. And exactly who do you think the liberal media would want to be our next president? Mmmm.

No More!
We got our phone bill in the mail Friday and I took a good look at it. I wanted to know exactly what I was paying $40 for. Everything looked great until I got to the last page. It listed my long distance carrier as AT&T. Now I have nothing against AT&T, but I never asked them to be my long distance carrier. As a matter of fact, we haven’t made a long distance phone call on our home phone in over a year, so I was perplexed as to why I needed to pay $9.28 a month for a service that I never used.
Kevin called the phone company to ask if we HAD to have a long distance carrier. The phone company told him that we did not have to have this and that they would immediately remove it from our phone. They said that all we needed to do was inform AT&T ASAP so that they wouldn’t continue to charge us for the rest of this billing period. That was so easy! It kills me to think how much money we could have saved had I canceled this a long time ago. Since we have cell phones we always use them to make any long distance calls. I wish this had dawned on me earlier!

The Procedure
This morning my aunt is having a procedure called a Heart Cath or angiogram. Just reading about it makes me feel queasy. I can’t imagine having this done while lying there awake. It just doesn’t seem fair!
Yesterday mom cooked dinner for the family. I really enjoyed being with everyone over at their house. That is the house that I grew up in and it’s still home to me; only now it’s my home away from home. We went out to Ashley’s school and took Guido for his walk and then we went back to moms for cake and ice cream. It was a very nice afternoon and evening.
When we got back home, Kevin and I put some things on ebay. If you want, you can view my auctions by clicking over on the side bar where it says ebay. Some items had bids just two hours after we put them up for auction. I love ebay!

Beckham
Last night we watched two good movies. The first was Van Helsing. Van Helsing is a hunter of evil things. In this movie he fights Dr. Jeckyll/Mr.Hyde, Frankenstein, the werewolf, and Dracula. Some things are cheesy, but for the most part it’s a good action movie.
The second movie we watched was Bend It Like Beckham. This movie is set in England and stars Parminder Nagra who also plays Neela on "ER". This was an awesome family movie and it had a fantastic soundtrack! It’s about a girl who wants to play football (soccer for those of us here in the U.S.) against her parents wishes; they don’t believe that a man will ever want to marry a woman who plays football. This is a really fun, make-you-feel-good movie.

Another Update
If you read my post yesterday about our cable, you will know that we have encountered problems with our sound going off and on in the middle of programs. This morning Adelphia called me and said that they are aware of the sound problems. They know that it is not only my line, but a problem in the whole area and they are working to resolve it. YEA!!!!! So, if you called in to report this problem you have a BIG thank you from me! I appreciate it!

Tobacco Worm Update
We weren't quick enough getting the tomato leaves so the tobacco worm started his cocoon. This is what he looks like today:
We didn't have a big enough jar, so we just kept him in a shoe box. I really hope that he survives. I would hate to think that we killed something so neat. He will end up being a large moth.
THIS site has some great pictures of both caterpillar and moth.
HERE is a larger picture of the moth. It looks to be quite chunky!
THIS is probably the best site because it shows all three stages that this bug goes through.
I wonder how soon it will be before we are proud parents of a moth?!

Say What?
I apologize in advance to my out of town readers, but this message is for locals.
For the last week we have been having problems with our cable. We love watching the upper channels like Discovery, A&E, and many more but the sound keeps cutting in and out on us. We thought that it was our TV, so we checked the two others in the house and they were doing the same thing. So, I called my dad last night who doesn’t live in my neighborhood and he said that he was encountering the same problem.
We called Adelphia to report the problem and they are sending a technician over on Friday to check my lines. I think this is a complete waste of time since I’m not the only one having this problem. The lady at Adelphia said that if other people are having this trouble they need to call in and report it or it won’t look like it’s a major dilemma.
So, my local readers, if you are having sound problems on your television – please call today. Last Monday night I missed an entire half hour program because the sound was off! The number is: 1-888-683-1000

A Tobacco Worm
I found this neon green tobacco worm while taking Guido for his walk yesterday. Ashley insists on keeping him in her room in a shoe box filled with grass. I have no idea how long he will survive like this. He has tiny, black tentacles all up under his body. When I picked him up he immediately latched on, but it in no way hurt. Actually, it felt kind of cool.
Yesterday I noticed that my kitchen remodel photo gallery was out of order and was no fun to look at that way. Kevin has since rectified the problem, so if you want, take a look of things in the order they really happened. The gallery is over on the right side of this page.

Freak Of The Week
What can I say, my sister is a freak! A few months ago when she bought her motorcycle she also decided that she wanted to clean crime scenes. She figured that no one else wanted to do it and that she could make big bucks.
Months have passed and I hadn’t heard anything more about it. I hadn’t mentioned it either. You know, you think to yourself that if you don’t mention it, it will just go away. Well, it hasn’t!
She apparently talked to people outside the family about cleaning crime scenes. I don’t know why this surprises me, but it does. Anyway, she got a call from a man who says that they will pay her $1,000 to clean a crime scene. It is in a hotel room here in Kentucky where a person committed suicide and blew their brains out. The police have just released the room and now it can be cleaned. It seems that blood is everywhere; the wallpaper, carpet, and everywhere else. She says that they want her to dispose of the mattresses and bedding. If she cannot remove the stains from the carpet she will have to rip it out. I guess the same goes for the wallpaper.
She will find out more today. If this job goes through, it will be she and her husband that do it. I wonder though how they plan on disposing of the mattresses, carpet and other things covered in blood. I’m sure that you have to dispose of these things in a particular manner and I’m sure there is a fee. Does she know what chemicals to use to clean up blood? Does she have these chemicals?
I told Kevin last night that it would be like her to go up there with some rags and a bottle of Windex. I’m not trying to be negative about the job – someone has to do it. I’m just wondering if there is a lot more involved than she is aware of and if she’s anywhere near prepared. This should be interesting. I will try to make updates as I hear of them.
*UPDATE*
She’s not going to do it. They wanted her to be bonded so that their insurance company would pay her fee. There’s no way that she could accomplish that by this weekend. Maybe this will be something that she will work on so that she is prepared to do the next job.

Pretty Pumpkins
I took Ashley and her friend Michelle to the library tonight for some pumpkin decorating. We supplied the pumpkin and the library supplied the candy. The kids had a great time! They had a pretty good turnout also; about 25 kids. The candy was nice and squishy so that they could put straight pins through and stick into the pumpkin.
Here’s the finished product:

A Fall Treat
Are you going to be carving a pumpkin soon? Well, don’t throw away those seeds. You can roast them in the oven and they are delicious! I got my seeds Friday night from my parents and I roasted them tonight. It takes a little time, but they are so worth it. I have never tried the ones for sale at the grocery so I can’t compare them.
Here’s what to do after carving your pumpkin: rinse the seeds thoroughly using a colander leaving no pumpkin residue. The seeds will still be slimy after running them through water so just expect that. After rinsing them off, lay the seeds out on paper towels to let some of the water drain off. After some water has drained, lay them one layer thick on a clean kitchen towel. Roll the towel up and let it sit in a dry place for a few days.
The seeds should be dried out for the most part and can now be “treated” and baked. They will most likely be stuck to the towel, but just peel them off and they are fine.
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Melt 2 Tbsp. of butter in a sauce pan. Add your seeds (about 2 cups, but this really doesn’t matter) to the melted butter. Sprinkle ½ tsp. garlic powder and ½ tsp. Nature’s Seasoning over the seeds and stir. Spread the seeds one layer thick onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 40 minutes, stirring often. When the seeds are browned and crisp they are ready to eat.
*I like mine a little spicy, so once they are on the cookie sheet before baking I sprinkle them with Nature’s Seasoning.

What Are You Supposed To Be?
There’s a business located right down from Ashley’s school. This business has invited the kids to come in and go trick-or-treating. They have done this every year since Ashley has been going to school. The kids love dressing up and walking through this business and getting tons of candy and complements.
Last year I walked along with her class and was very impressed with the way these employees interacted with the kids. The whole inside of the business was decorated like a Willy Wonka wonderland and each cubicle was decorated or the employee had actually dressed up for this fun day.
I know that these people want and enjoy seeing the kids in their costumes. The whole point of Halloween is dressing up and getting candy. So what’s my problem?
Well, Ashley’s class has accepted the invitation to go trick-or-treating however they will not be in costume. No costumes?! Why bother going then? If I were a kid I would feel stupid trick-or-treating in my dress code clothes. And aren’t these employees going to be disappointed? I wonder.

My Soap Box
Not even the excitement of the Presidential Debate could keep Guido awake!
I have to wait at Ashley’s school every afternoon for about an hour for her to be dismissed. I don’t have to do this, but I along with many other moms and grandmas like to get there early to get a good parking spot. I used to use this time to read, but that was BG (before Guido). Kevin and I took him for a walk one day when we were waiting and now he thinks he has to go every day when we get there. If I didn’t take him, he would just whine and it’s not worth it.
On Tuesday a lady stopped me and told me about her pug. On Wednesday she actually brought her friend’s pug with her. The pug was a little girl named Lulu and probably seven or eight weeks old.
I let Guido off of his leash to play with her and it was the most amazing sight! It was like they knew that they were the same breed. They rolled over on each other, bit each other’s fat rolls, held each other down, and chased each other around. They had a blast and it was absolutely adorable seeing the two of them together. So, that’s another reason why Guido was tired last night; that and the fact that he usually tires out around eight anyway.
New Subject:
Last night I dreamed that my sister was pregnant and then I found out that I was pregnant too. I was depressed and miserable at the thought of having another baby, but I knew that it was my fault that I had gotten that way. I always dream things for a reason. I think I dreamed this because I fell asleep thinking about partial birth abortions and how barbaric they are and thinking: how could anyone in the world perform this act let alone believe in it? I just don’t comprehend how John Kerry or anyone with even a smidgen of intelligence believes it is a woman’s choice to choose who and when to murder. In what asinine world would that ever become legal?! Oh, I’m sorry! That would be this world! What an arrogant, self-loving, self-satisfying society we are! What kind of self proclaimed Christian believes and supports that?! What kind of Christian votes for someone with these beliefs?! Not the Christians in my Bible.
Note: Don’t assume that you know what a partial birth abortion is and what it entails. If you have never read about it, look it up. When you have the details of the procedure, you’ll cry and want to scream and wish that you didn’t live in a society where things like this are allowed to happen.

It is almost impossible for me to believe that Christopher Reeve is dead. As the news reports, he went into cardiac arrest and then a coma. He died Sunday.
I not only enjoyed him in the Superman movies; I especially loved him in Somewhere in Time. This movie is brilliant and has a beautiful musical score. As a matter of fact, I own the music CD.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Reeve family. I am truly sad for them.

Blues
Kevin was off this past week for fall break. Now that he’s going back to work, I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. It was truly wonderful having him at home. Things went so much more smoothly and I didn’t mind getting up to take the kids to school every day since I could use the truck. It was fun having someone to talk to during the day. Now the party’s over. I guess I should start looking forward to Christmas break now.

Stickem' Up!
After three weeks of living together, this is about as close as they get. Notice in the picture below how they are both turned the same way.
Every time Church sees Guido he puts a paw up in the air ready to smack Guido wherever he can. Guido, seeing the behavior, now thinks that this is the norm and raises his paw in the air also. I think he believes that this is “hello”. Little does he know that Church would scratch his eyes out if he had claws!

A Book & A Brownie
Tonight I finished reading The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. No one would ever know that this book was first published in 1908; it could just as easily been written this year.
This children’s classic is about four friends (Toad, Badger, Water Rat, and Mole) who learn to work together to benefit them all. They have many adventures that occasionally end in serious consequences, but get cleared up in the conclusion. I found it funny that the last owner of this book wrote his name inside the front cover along with the words “4TH Grade”. Yes, this book went from the hands of a forth grader to the hands of a 32 year old woman. It is laughable, but I don’t care. It’s a classic and I feel better now for having read it. I have seen the DVD at the library and plan to watch the movie as soon as I can get it.
In other news: Ashley baked tonight using her Easy Bake Oven. She used her last two mixes, so Aunt Patt if you’re reading this: this is a hint for Christmas: She needs Easy Bake Oven Mixes. I’m a good hinter, huh!

Crunch
As money tightens we are considering making several changes in our lives.
#1 – our Internet connection. Right now we are paying $40 a month for our cable modem. We could sign up with a dial-up service for half that amount. Yes, I would miss the cable modem terribly, but $40 is $40.
#2 – our digital cable needs to be reduced to just expanded basic. We would still get 66 channels. The only channels I watch above that are BBC and the Style network. The kids would miss Nick Too and Nick Toons, but they would learn to live with just Nickelodeon, Disney, and Cartoon Network. Heck, when I was a kid cartoons were limited to after school and Saturday mornings. You didn’t have channels that focused on kids programming all day.
This would save us around $13 and that’s mainly the rental fees for the boxes and remotes. It’s robbery if you ask me.
#3 – our cell phones. We have a contract and I have no idea how hard it would be/ if there would be any fees to get out of it. Our cell phone bill is almost $60 a month. That’s with free phone to phone calls. Kevin and I would both miss talking to each other at lunch, but we could use messenger. I wonder how well messenger works with dial-up.
These are the thoughts running through my mind right now. The only other bill that could be eliminated would be the daily newspaper. I would hate to stop getting this though. It’s only about $10 per month and I really do get a lot from it.

Oh No ...
I received this in an email today. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
I went to the store the other day and was only in there for about five minutes. When I came out there was a Fayette County cop writing out a parking ticket. I went up to him and said, “Come on buddy, don’t be a jerk. How about giving a Senior citizen a break?"
He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a bad name. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires. So I called him a way worse name. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket.
This went on for about twenty minutes. The more I abused him the more tickets he wrote. I didn’t care. My car was parked around the corner and this one had an “ELECT JOHN KERRY” bumper sticker on it.

I Got A Rock!
We have officially decorated for Halloween. The pumpkins are sitting everywhere along with skeletons, bats, spiders, and ghosts. It’s all in good fun and my kids love it!
I have always felt very strongly that Halloween is what you make of it. I know that many church people disagree and fear that devils and demons are being worshiped, but I can tell you that I love Halloween and have never met up with any bad boogies on this night; rotten teenagers, but no truly bad people.
I’m glad that my parents never held me back and made me stay home on this holiday. No, they always helped me come up with something to be. I enjoy going as much if not more with my kids now. I love seeing the looks on their faces when they get home and dump that big bag of candy out on the table. It’s always much more than they imagined …… or needed.
Along with the decorations come the books. I would guess that I have twenty Halloween books and that’s quite a bit! All throughout October if we want something quick to read, we can easily grab one of these terrific books.
The same thing goes for movies. I will sort the Halloween ones out shortly. Ashley and I started our Halloween movie watching a few days ago. We have already watched all of Stephen King’s Rose Red which is about six hours long and another day we watched The Shining. She covers her eyes on the really bad parts, but she’s not afraid of anything and hasn’t had a sleepless night yet. A few weeks ago we watched It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown but we will watch this one over and over again. I just love hearing him say, “I got a rock!”
