Today's Letter is N for New Year's, Nest & No

Ok, some of you will find this incredibly boring, but I thought it was cool.

2nests.JPG

Do you see the two birds’ nests?! I don’t think I’ve ever seen two nests right on top of each other like that.

Anyway, it’s New Year’s Eve. Are we going anywhere? No. Were we invited anywhere? Ummm, No. I’m sure we will watch something good on TV here at home where it’s nice and safe. Do I have any resolutions? Not really. I gave up on those years ago!

Paris ... Kentucky That Is!

The neatest thing happened today! Kevin, Ashley and I had taken Guido for a walk up near Ashley’s school. We were walking down the sidewalk talking and I was asking Kevin how to get to Paris because one of my friends lives there.

All of a sudden there was a mini van beside us. Simultaneously the front window went down and the back door was forced open. For that split second my mind was racing. Come to find out, it was my friend who I had just been talking about not seconds before! Now that’s pretty cool especially since she doesn’t even live here! So, now I must say hello to Deanna, her dad Murl, and her mom who I met for the first time today!

When we got home from our walk, Church was lying in the wing chair. When he looks like this I just want to squeeze him! Maybe that’s why he stays away!

lazykitty.JPG

After taking the picture above, he gave me this look (below). If he could talk I just know he would be saying, “Woman, I’m trying to sleep here!”

That’s my baby!

Bad Tummy

Ashley had a stomach virus for a while. It started last night and stopped around 3:00 this afternoon. We took her to the doctor and he said that it could last up to three days. I can’t imagine that! She seems fine now though.

finenow.JPG

As soon as we got back home she took a bubble bath and put her new pink pajamas on. She was able to eat Zesta crackers and drink some 7UP. Luckily she is still on vacation, so we didn't have to worry about her missing school.

TV On DVD

Ashley is having her friend Hayleigh spend the night tonight. Hayleigh is the one on the left.

hayash.JPG

So far, they have put make-up on each other, played in her room, eaten pizza, and ran Guido to death.

Today Sex and the City - Season Six, Part 2 was released and guess who bought a copy?! That’s right! So, later on tonight while the girls play in Ashley’s room and Andrew plays his XBOX, Kevin and I will be watching the final episodes. We stopped getting HBO a long time ago so we have no idea how the last season ends. I’ve heard rumors, but know nothing concrete.

Kevin spent the rest of his Christmas money. He won Star Trek the Next Generation season 5 off of ebay. The total price was $90 and that includes shipping. In the stores where we’ve seen it the price was over $100, so we got a bargain.

Do any of you own TV shows on DVD? It would be interesting to know each others tastes.

Floor Space

After church today we put the Christmas tree and decorations in the attic for another year. By decorating the day after Thanksgiving, we get plenty of time to appreciate it all. Also, we have a small house and we need every little bit of available space. We weren’t able to get the lights from outside because they are all under ice. It’s supposed to warm up later this week so we will tend to them then.

After dinner we went to Wal-Mart. They had all of their Christmas stuff marked 50% off the regular price. I bought four rolls of wrapping paper and a set of gift boxes. I didn’t NEED anything, but felt compelled to buy since it was half off. I once heard someone say, “You can go broke saving money.” Nothing could be truer than that!

Christmas Cake

I’m sure that everyone has seen some version of this, but I think it’s cute, so here it is again.

Well it's that time of year again to bake our favorite goodies. so get out your pans and ingredients and lets start baking.

1 cup of water
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 cup nuts
2 cups dried fruit
lemon juice
1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequila

First lets sample the Cuervo to check the quality. Good. Now take a large bowl. Mmm, check the Cuervo again, just to be sure it's of the highest quality. Pour one level cup and drink.

Turn on the electric mixer, beat one cup butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar, beat again. At this point it's best to make sure the Cuervo it still OK. Try another cup.. just in case.

Turn off the mixerer thingy. break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Pick up the frigging fruit off the floor. mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers just pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity.

Next, sift 2 cups of salt, or something white. Who givesshz a sheet. check the Jose Cuervo. Now Shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar or somefink. grease oven.

Turn the cake tin 360 degress and try not to fall over. don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window, finish the Cose Juervo and make sure to put the stove in the dishwasher.

Cherry Mistmas!

He's Cooking!

It’s so nice living with a great cook! Kevin made the cheese ball today that we’ll be eating on Friday. He also made a new recipe: pumpkin bars. After cutting them, I got a small sample and let me tell you – they are to die for! On Friday I will try to remember to take a few pictures. Last night he made his chocolate peanut butter pie for us. Andrew, Ashley, and I love it! It will be gone before Friday is here for sure!

We are all getting excited! We’ve been watching the Christmas movies too! So far (not including cartoons) we’ve watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, The Homecoming, and Home for the Holidays. The later is actually a Thanksgiving movie, but it’s still entertaining. The Homecoming was the first Walton’s movie made. The dad, mother, and grandfather were different in this version. I’m so glad that they changed these people when they made the TV show. I can’t imagine liking it near as much without Ralph Waite, Michael Learned, and Will Geer. As far as National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation goes: if you haven’t seen this then you must be living in a cave! This is by far the funniest Christmas movie there is. If you haven’t seen it, you need to rent it TODAY!

For some reason my children love making faces for the webcam and saving them. Here’s one from a while back:

Today Kevin walked in on Andrew saving pictures. He was dressed in a cloak that he had used several Halloween’s back. Here’s what it looks like:

Book IV

I finished the forth book in The Dark Tower series entitled Wizard and Glass late this afternoon. I’ll start off by saying that this is my absolute favorite out of the series thus far. It was a fantastic story.

After reading this book I know without a doubt that Stephen King could write one heck of a trashy romance novel. And to me that’s a good thing because he could write one that actually has a different story line than all the rest. It would be some twisted tale that takes you through the pains of love both physically and mentally. By the end of the book, your head would be reeling from the shock of it all. Yes, he needs to get to work on that. It would sell millions.

I loved getting to know Susan in this book; her emotions, her personality, her weaknesses and strengths – Susan was the forth book and I loved her!

In the end, I was a sack of tears: make-up running down my face and tears hitting my chest. I’m sure that I looked terrible, but I did enjoy this book and believe it to be extraordinary. I guess tomorrow or late tonight I will begin book five: Wolves of the Calla; that is, if I can leave all the rest that I now know behind.

Games

Kevin and I had a great time today. After church we got together with some friends that we really hadn’t spent any time with since this summer. You know, the days and months fly by and you don’t realize how much you’ve missed each other until you get together again.

We went to their house and played Scattergories and Scrabble. Then we came back to our house and played Tribond and another round of Scrabble. Their son and Ashley played together in her room and had a blast. Ashley made sure that he got a Spiderman tattoo on his arm while he was here.

I definitely don’t want to wait so long before we get together again!

Our Plans

I think everyone in Winchester was in Wal-Mart this afternoon. It was packed! Of course everyone decided to check out at the same time; it seemed that way!

We spent $230. Very little of that was spent on last minute presents. Most of it was on food. As in years past, Kevin and I have decided to host Christmas Eve. We make appetizers and the family watches the kids open their presents from us. Christmas day is spent at my parent’s house eating and opening more gifts.

Here’s what is on our Christmas Eve menu:

*little smokies
*cheese ball/Ritz crackers
*country ham on mini biscuits
*potato skins
*summer sausage/cheese/Ritz crackers
*buffalo chicken wing dip/tortilla chips
*punch

Believe it or not it takes a while to pull all of this together. This year my sister will be here with her two three year olds. This will also be our first year with Guido the hyper pug. It should be an interesting night to say the least! I may try to take some pictures.

Nine Things

I don’t recall who sent this to me, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

NINE THINGS GOD WON'T ASK

1...God won't ask what kind of car you drove. He'll ask how many people you drove who didn't have transportation.

2...God won't ask the square footage of your house. He'll ask how many people you welcomed into your home.

3...God won't ask about the clothes you had in your closet. He'll ask how many you helped to clothe.

4...God won't ask what your highest salary was. He'll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.

5...God won't ask what your job title was. He'll ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability.

6...God won't ask how many friends you had. He'll ask how many people to whom you were a friend.

7...God won't ask in what neighborhood you lived. He'll ask how you treated your neighbors.

8...God won't ask about the color of your skin. He'll ask about the content of your character.

9...God won't ask why it took you so long to seek Salvation. He'll lovingly take you to your mansion in heaven and not to the gates of Hell.

Rosie & The Dixie Chicks

If you haven’t heard the following song, you really need to. It’s on the CD titled Another Rosie Christmas and is sung by Rosie O’Donnell and The Dixie Chicks. This is one of those rare Christmas songs that need to be turned up and sung loudly with! I was going to suggest going to Amazon to take a quick listen, but they don’t actually play any of the song, only the beginning where there’s talking.

Merry Christmas from the Family

Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk
at our Christmas party.
We were drinkin’ champagne punch and home-made eggnog.
Little sister brought her new boyfriend.
He was a Mexican.
We didn't know what to think of him
'till he sang Feliz Navidad
Feliz Navidad (That means Merry Christmas in Espanola. That’s what it means. Sure nuf!)

My Brother Ken brought his kids with him.
The three from his first wife Lynn;
and the two identical twins from his second wife Mary-Nell
He also brought his third wife Kay.
Who talks all about AA;
Chainsmokin' while the stereo plays
Noel Noel, The First Noel.

Chorus:
Carve the turkey, turn the ballgame on,
mix margaritas when the eggnog's gone.
Send somebody to the QuicPac store.
We need some ice and an extension cord.
A can of bean dip and some Diet Right,
a box of Tampons, some Marlboro lights.
Hallelujah everybody say cheese.
Merry Christmas from the family!

Fran and Rita drove from Harlogin.
I can't remember how I'm kin to them.
But when they tried to plug their motor home in,
they blew our Christmas lights.
Cousin David knew just what went wrong.
So we waited out on our front lawn.
He threw the breaker
and the lights came on
and we sang Silent Night, O Silent Night! Holy Night!

Carve the turkey turn the ballgame on.
Make Bloody Mary’s cuz’ we all want one!
Send somebody to the Stop N' Go;
we need a can of cheese and a can of fake snow.
A bag of CornNuts and some Diet Sprite,
a box of Tampons, some Salem lights.
Hallelujah everybody say cheese.
Merry Christmas from the family!

Feliz Navidad!

Upset

Back on November 3rd I talked about how excited I was that Andrew was getting his braces taken off. His orthodontist assured me that they would be off before Christmas.

Well, I ASSUMED it was THIS Christmas and not next! He went for his final appointment of the year this morning and they added another power chain! Nothing has come off and his next appointment isn’t until January 17th! I’m upset and Andrew was upset when we left also. I could tell that he was holding back crying. He really had his hopes up that by Christmas they would be gone. I believed the same thing. I had fully intended to fill his stocking with gum and beef jerky; now that will have to wait. I feel bad for him, but I pray that the benefits outweigh the stress and pain that he has gone through when this is all over with.

Just Goofy!

Let me tell you how goofy Kevin and I are.

Yesterday we went to Wal-Mart to pick up a few things. We parked straight down from the door. It was a long way down the parking lot, but still in clear view.

We were only in the store for maybe 15 minutes. We came out the same door that we originally entered and walked straight back down the isle looking for the truck. You can’t miss it; it’s red for goodness sakes. We didn’t see it where we thought we had left it so we walked down the isle a little further. We still didn’t see the truck. So, we started looking in other isles. I asked Kevin, “Do you think someone took our truck?” He said that there was no way they could.

So, he starts pushing the panic button on his key ring. This should make the horn start honking until you push the button again. Well, he’s pushing it and we aren’t hearing anything. No truck. No honking.

I finally start back up the isle and realize to my horror that we had driven MY car to Wal-Mart! My small, gold, Saturn. AAAARRRRRGGGGGG!

The sad part about this whole thing is that we aren’t even in our mid thirties. What will our minds be like in a few more years? At least it was both of us and not just me.

Book Three

Before noon yesterday I finished the third book in The Dark Tower series called The Waste Lands. I know that I probably only have a few readers who have read this series, but I want to comment on each of them as I finish anyway.

I am getting very attached to these characters – Roland, Susannah, Eddie, Jake, and Oy. Oy is a “Bumbler”. These look like dogs, badgers, and raccoons mixed together. During the course of this book, Oy has several close calls with his life. Each of these times, I was on the verge of tears. I don’t want anything to happen to any of them.

Out of the three books so far, the second is my favorite. This book was interesting and led up to a great finish. However, during the second book I was on pins and needles the entire time – not only at the end.

I have to say that I am thrilled to be reading the series when all the books are complete. I cannot imagine waiting almost FIVE YEARS between the third and forth books. My memory is bad anyway no matter how much I like something. There’s no way that these books would have meant as much to me if I had had to wait.

NOT PC

While shopping for Christmas cards today I saw many boxes labeled “African American”. My question to this is: where do I go to buy the “Caucasian” cards? Where is the Spanish, Chinese, or other raced cards? You get my point.

I would bet big money that if there were cards labeled “Caucasian” someone from the NAACP would be suing and crying racism. If we’re going to be equal then let’s be equal. Get my drift?

Top 10

Just in case you missed Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People of 2004 special last night, here is the run down of her picks:

10. Oprah Winfrey – She turned 50 this year and does countless charitable good work.

9. Ken Jennings – He’s the guy who won over 2 million dollars on Jeopardy. He’s a devout Mormon and will give 10% of his winnings to his church (how many people would do that?).

8. Donald Trump – Master of The Apprentice and New York’s building tycoon.

7. Usher – Popular singer (They always have a singer in the top 10. I don’t necessarily think that Usher is fascinating, although he seemed pretty fascinated with himself.).

6. The Google Guys – These two guys are the creators of the search engine Google. They both live frugally even though they are now worth billions. One of the guys doesn’t even own his own car and he rents his apartment. Their motto is: Don’t Be Evil.

5. Michael Moore – Anti Bush, Anti Republican (lard butt) who created the movie Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine.

4. Mel Gibson – Christian actor who made The Passion of the Christ spending 25 million dollars of his own money. The movie made over 500 million.

3. Curt Shilling – Boston Red Sox pitcher. He helped pitch the Red Sox to a win amid his ankle bleeding and turning his sock red.

2. Paris Hilton – Daughter of the Hilton Hotel founder. She became famous from the TV show The Simple Life.

1. Karl Rove – The president’s political advisor. The president has nicknamed him “Turd Blossom.”

His Other End

I have discovered two new shampoos by Alberto VO5 that I am in love with! They are Blueberries & Cream and Strawberries & Cream. The smell is fabulous and the price is even better. You can get a bottle around here for less than a dollar!

In other news: it was 70 degrees today! It’s December people! It’s not supposed to be 70 degrees. Yes, I loved it, but that’s beside the point! It was blustery too! I worked twice as hard taking Guido for his walk. I felt as if I was in one of those wind tunnels. My clothes were pasted to me and my hair was hanging all in my face. It escapes me how people can look good while walking their pets. I just end up looking like his tail end!

A Drama

Kevin and I sat down yesterday to watch Cold Mountain. For 2 ½ hours this movie kept us captivated. It was wonderful to say the least. Nicole Kidman and Jude Law were fantastic! There were times during the movie when Renee Zellweger had me laughing out loud. At other times I was very near tears. This is a drama that you just have to see. I don’t recall cursing, however there was nudity.

I have to mention the character of Sally Swanger played by Kathy Baker. It bothered me through half of the movie that I recognized her voice and face and I just couldn’t place her. I finally figured it out! She’s the one who played the part of Joyce Monroe in the movie Edward Scissorhands! She was the red head who tried to seduce Edward. I had a hard time believing this was the same woman, but she did an excellent job.

If you have seen this, let me know what you thought and leave me a comment. My mind keeps going back to the many, many events that took place. This was a hefty drama, but so, so fantastic!

Book 2

I finished the second book out of The Dark Tower series last night. It was called The Drawing of the Three. I have to say that I really enjoyed this one ten times more than the first. This second book kept me wanting to read to see what was going to happen next with this main character Roland.

I like Roland. He’s a man’s man. He’s rugged, quick, strong, and at the same time I believe that he’s very intelligent. He grasps things quickly – the meanings of words or how to do things. When he’s in a tough situation, I find myself rooting for him and cheering him on. I don’t want him hurt or caught where he shouldn’t be.

I don’t think that you could read this book and then stop with the series. This book urges you to go on to the next. You want to see how far Roland gets and the other characters also. I start The Waste Lands book three tomorrow. Kevin says that this is his favorite so now I’m really excited!

The Meadow

meadow1.JPG

Each day when I walk Guido, I pass a certain place down the path. As I pass by this place, it reminds me of a poem that I heard and read as a child. I loved it then and still do. I think this was written by John Anthony Hartell. The poem was in a Better Homes and Gardens Story Book. It was given to my sister and me on October 18, 1978. The poem is:

Over in the Meadow

Over in the meadow in the sand and the sun,
Lived and old mother turtle and her little turtle one.
Dig said the mother, we dig said the one,
So they dug all day in the sand and the sun.

Over in the meadow where the stream runs blue,
Lived an old mother fish and her little fishes two.
Swim said the mother, we swim said the two,
So they swam all day where the stream runs blue.

Over in the meadow in a hole in a tree,
Lived an old mother owl and her little owls three.
Tu-whoo said the mother, Tu-whoo said the three,
So they tu-whooed all day in a hole in a tree.

Over in the meadow by the old barn door,
Lived an old mother rat and her little ratties four.
Gnaw said the mother, we gnaw said the four,
So they gnawed all day by the old barn door.

Over in the meadow in a snug beehive,
Lived an old mother bee and her little bees five.
Buzz said the mother, we buzz said the five,
So they buzzed all day in a snug beehive.

Over in the meadow in a nest built of sticks,
Lived an old mother crow and her little crows six.
Caw said the mother, we caw said the six,
So they cawed all day in a nest built of sticks.

Over in the meadow where the grass grows so even,
Lived an old mother frog and her little froggies seven.
Jump said the mother, we jump said the seven,
So they jumped all day where the grass grows so even.

Over in the meadow by the old mossy gate,
Lived an old mother lizard and her little lizards eight.
Bask said the mother, we bask said the eight,
So they basked all day by the old mossy gate.

Over in the meadow by the old scotch pine,
Lived an old mother duck and her little ducks nine.
Quack said the mother, we quack said the nine,
So they quacked all day by the old scotch pine.

Over in the meadow in a cozy wee den,
Lived an old mother beaver and her little beavers ten.
Beave said the mother, we beave said the ten,
So they beaved all day in a cozy wee den.

Thinking ...

Is it so bad if the dog sits in my lap while I use the restroom?

Is it so bad that I think his paws smell like Fritos ?

Is it so bad that I never want to leave him at home alone?

Is it so bad that I want Kevin to make clothes for him?

Is it so bad that he has a better schedule than most children?

Is it so bad that I kiss him as much as I do my other family members?

Naaaaaa!

He Was Tired!

Had any of you been following Ken Jennings on Jeopardy? In my opinion I truly think that he bailed on purpose. I have no idea what his reasons were. Maybe he was just tired of taping three shows or more per day. Maybe he was tired of being away from home. I don’t know. What I do know is that I will never accept that he lost. No way. Not like he did.

Wednesday, December 8th, Barbara Walters is doing her special Ten Most Fascinating People of 2004. She said that Ken is one of those people. That should definitely be interesting and I will be watching.

HERE is a list of some others that were interviewed.

I Bet You Can't Top This!

Do I have a story to tell today or what! I only hope that I can do it justice and that you can picture everything in your mind. It has to do with the church visitors. For arguments sake we’ll call the visitors “Jim & Debbie”. Last night was visitation and last night they went to my sister Jennifer’s house. I am betting it may very well be the last time. Here is what she relayed to me:

About a week ago Jennifer deposited a large sum of money into her checking account (think: thousands). The bank messed up and put this money into someone else’s account. In the mean time, Jennifer writes over $1,000 worth of checks and they all bounce. The bank eventually straightened things out and put the money into her account, but the water bill that she had paid by check bounces. Instead of calling her to see what was up, the water company promptly arrives at her home and turns off her water. This was at lunchtime. She called the water company and told them that her husband would pay the bill at 2 that afternoon when he got off of work. They agreed to turn the water back on as soon as the bill had been paid. So, Jennifer goes back to work.

It had poured rain all day yesterday. Jennifer had to collect five Herbie’s (trash cans) from the curb in front of the doctor’s office where she works, in this torrential rain. By the time she had finished putting them back in place, she was soaked to the bone (and probably looking like death). She got home around 6:30 wanting to take a shower, only to discover that the water company had still not turned on her water. Dirty clothes were piled high, dishes were in the sink. The lunch dishes from earlier that day were still on the kitchen table waiting to be washed. She sat down for not even five minutes to catch her breath and the doorbell rings. Thinking that this is her husband coming home, she answers the door. It’s Jim and Debbie from church and they’ve come callin’! Oh joy!

Jennifer escorts them upstairs where she has two comfy couches that face one another. Jim and Debbie take one couch and Jennifer and her three year old daughter Sydnee take the other. (At this point I don’t know where Jesse, her other daughter was). Jennifer hopes that they don’t look into the kitchen and notice all of the dirty dishes piled high. She also looks at her children who love to wear dress-up clothes. She wishes however that they didn’t like these particular dress-up clothes because they look like rags that orphans would wear. Oh well, it was too late so she sat there.

All of a sudden Jim and Debbie got horrid looks on their faces. Jennifer didn’t know what was wrong, but looked in the direction of their eyes which was on Sydnee. It was only then that Jennifer realized Sydnee had on no panties. There she was, sitting with her legs wide open, and her fingers working where the sun doesn’t shine.

I have no idea what Jennifer did. All she said was, “What are you supposed to say? Huh? Huh?” It’s really too bad that the story doesn’t end here, but it doesn’t. Keep reading.

While Sydnee was “playing”, Jennifer’s other three-year-old, Jesse, had climbed up in the middle of the kitchen table. Yes, the same kitchen table with all of the dirty dishes. Jennifer had placed a vase with fake flowers in the center of the table. She filled this vase with colored red water to make it look pretty. Well, Jesse turned that vase over and spilled all of the water. When she was done, she said, “Oh, sh*t!” Jennifer was dying at this point. I asked her what Jim and Debbie were saying and she said that they weren’t saying anything: they were enjoying the show.

Since Jesse’s clothes were wet, she stripped down buck naked and ran around the house. Jesse’s just a skinny little kid, but I found it funny when Jennifer said, “Here’s my anorexic-looking daughter running around naked!”

Harold had just bought some beer at the local Wal-Mart, but luckily he left that out in the truck seeing that the church people had come callin’. He brought in some Taco Bell for their dinner. Jennifer said that their dinner sat on the table for 15 minutes before Jim and Debbie had enough sense to leave.

Jennifer says that she’s sure Jim and Debbie “laid hands” on her house as they left! Maybe next time she’ll take a lesson from us and not answer the door!
