Simple Advice

Another great email ….

By following the simple advice I heard on a Dr. Phil show, I have finally found inner peace. Dr. Phil proclaimed the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started.

So I looked around my house to see things I started and hadn't finished; and, before leaving the house this morning I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of White Zinfandel, a bottle of Baileys, a bottle of Kailua, a package of Oreos, the remainder of both Prozac and Valium prescriptions, the rest of the Cheesecake, some Saltines and a box of Chocolates.

You have no idea how freaking good I feel.

15

After reading the following, you cannot help but feel great:

15 Things You Probably Never Knew or Thought About

1. At least 5 people in this world love you so much they would die for you.

2. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.

3. The only reason anyone would ever hate you is because they want to be just like you.

4. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.

5. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.

6. You mean the world to someone.

7. If not for you, someone may not be living.

8. You are special and unique.

9. Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.

10. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good comes from it.

11. When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a look: you most likely turned your back on the world.

12. When you think you have no chance of getting what you want, you probably won't get it, but if you believe in yourself, probably, sooner or later, you will get it.

13. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks.

14. Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when they know.

15. If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know that they are great.

Green-Eyed Monster?

It’s hurtful when someone doesn’t acknowledge a gift.

You have thought about someone and their special event, illness, etc., and you take the time to buy something that you think they will absolutely love. You give it to their husband, saying, “This is for your wife for such and such reason.” The husband joyfully accepts it, but then you never hear another word about it, no thank you, no – nothing from the wife.

This did not happen to me, but to someone close to me. She said that she even saw the wife later and she didn’t acknowledge the gift at all. I told her that if that had been me, I would have had no problem at all in asking, “Did you like the lotion I gave you?” Then if she had looked puzzled, you would have known that her husband had not told her whom the gift giver was. By not saying anything, the gift giver is left thinking that the wife must be a major bi*ch. That may or may not be true, but she will never know unless she asks.

The story continues …

Let’s say that the gift giver is a teacher and works at a school. We’ll call her Sally. We’ll refer to the wife as Tracy and the husband/coworker/gift receiver as Bob. Keep in mind that these are the same people as in the paragraphs above.

Bob is opening a new school in another county so he asks Sally, his coworker, to travel with him and help him clean it. He also lets Sally know that he would like her to come to this new school with him so that they can continue to work together. (There is no hanky panky here folks; it’s just two people working together who get along well with each other.) Sally agrees to help clean the new school and makes sure that she wears shorts because she knows that she will be hot.

After cleaning, Sally returns that same afternoon to her old school. She is still in the shorts she wore earlier, not expecting to have to teach that day. Unfortunately, several other people decide to leave, and Sally has to teach after all. She has no change of clothes and rather than make students wait, she makes the decision to go forth and teach in shorts. She even apologizes to her students for the way she is dressed.

Then, unexpectedly, Bob’s partners decide to write Sally up for wearing shorts! She traveled out of town because of Bob, cleaned because of Bob, and now she was being written up for wearing shorts! At this point, I have no idea where Bob was, but he would have been called had this been me.

I wish the story ended there, but it doesn’t …

Within the next few days, Sally is called into the office. She is told that she is not in trouble, but that she won’t be going to the new school with Bob. The reason given is her “strong personality” and “he isn’t comfortable being alone with you in the school.”

Sally’s head is now reeling from shock and she is humiliated to her very core. She doesn’t understand how this could have ever happened. She and Bob were such good friends – or it had seemed that way.

She thinks that this all somehow goes back to Tracy (the wife). She has no idea how or why in the world Tracy could be jealous, but she has no other ideas. After all, when Tracy comes to the school, she never acknowledges Sally is alive.

Sally now wonders if she needs to find a new school – one where people don’t think humiliating things about her. There is a school picnic coming up and she is refusing to go, as she is sure that all the other teachers have heard what has happened.

I know this was long, but I hope that you could follow it all. What are your thoughts and how would you suggest Sally handle the current situation? I honestly don’t think she has the nerve to confront Bob even though that would be my suggestion.

Error Messages

I had never seen this email and found it very amusing.

Here are 14 error messages reportedly seen on the computer screens in Japan, where some are written in Haiku. Aren't these better than "your computer has performed an illegal operation"?

--------------------------------------------
The Web site you seek
cannot be located,
but countless more exist.

--------------------------------------------
Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

---------------------------------------------
Program aborting:
Close all that you have worked on.
You ask far too much.

------------------------------------------------
Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

-------------------------------------
Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

-------------------------------------
Your file was so big.
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.

-------------------------------------
Stay the patient course.
Of little worth is your ire.
The network is down.

----------------------------------------------

A crash reduces your expensive
computer to a simple stone.

-----------------------------------------------
Three things are certain:
Death, taxes and lost data.
Guess which has occurred?

----------------------------------------------
You step in the stream,
but the water has moved on.
This page is not here.

-------------------------------------------------
Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.

------------------------------------------------
Having been erased,
The document you're seeking
must now be retyped.

-------------------------------------------------
Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.

-------------------------------------------------

Screen......Mind..........
Both are blank.

Ringing In My Ears

There is nothing worse than being woke up early in the morning by the telephone. When school is out and there is no need to get up early, we sleep in. I would think that most people do. The kids stay up half the night watching movies, so they sleep in until 11 most days. For this reason, I take the phone off the hook. Trust me, if I left it on, someone would call; they always do.

This morning Kevin and I woke to the sound of my cell phone ringing from the kitchen. It was 6:22. I was tired and it was annoying. It rang repeatedly and seemed exceedingly loud in the quiet house. Thinking that something might be wrong, I made my way into the kitchen to grab the maddening thing. It was a man wanting to tell me that someone was going to be late for work. He wanted to know if my husband owned a construction company. I told him that he had the wrong number and then he began to repeat my number back to me. “Yes,” I said, “that is the right number, but my husband is a teacher.” That was the end of the conversation.

Unfortunately, after all this, not only were Kevin and I awake, Guido was too. Once he wakes up in the morning, his bladder tells him that he must go out. Therefore, Kevin proceeded to get up and take him out. When he came back to bed, it took us an hour to get back to sleep.

This, my friends, is why I take the phone off the hook before I go to bed.

Wedding Bells

I just finished watching Rob and Amber Get Married. I have been a big fan of theirs since Survivor. When they were on The Amazing Race, I rooted for them all the way. They were the couple who never fought and smiled the entire time. It would be impossible to fake that happiness.

This two-hour special was great. We saw each of the homes where they grew up and where they will live now. We also saw special gifts they bought for each other, who their friends are, getting dance lessons, and much, much more. It’s amazing how much work goes into planning the perfect wedding. I hope they have a happy life together.

First Job

52105 (Custom).jpg

I took this picture on Saturday of Kevin, Guido, and my mom. We spent some time over there sitting on the front porch. I do miss having a porch, but the Willow tree makes up for it.

I forgot to mention that last Tuesday Andrew applied for a job. He was called in for an interview on Friday at 3:00 and he started work that same day at 5:00. By the end of the night, his feet were killing him. He is glad that he has a job, but it will be better once he sees that first check!

Monopoly

Our first official family game day began on Friday. We played Monopoly.

monopoly52005 (Custom).JPG

It had been a while since we had played and I was excited! That excitement dissipated some when I realized that all properties had been bought and I only owned four of them. That’s not so good.

At least I wasn’t the first one out. After about an hour and a half Andrew was bankrupt. After two hours, I followed suit. Andrew and I left the house as he had an appointment and when we got back home, they were still fighting it out. After four long hours, Ashley, the EIGHT YEAR OLD, beat us ALL in Monopoly. We should be ashamed!

Here is the big winner:

thebigwinner (Custom).JPG

You can see all the $500 and $100 bills in her hands that she ended up earning not including the 50’s, 20’s, 10’s, 5’s, and 1’s. She had property and hotels everywhere. It is really sad.

Glasses

Look who has glasses:

glasses (Custom).JPG

Ashley had been having headaches daily, so we took her to have her eyes examined. The doctor said that she has a slight problem seeing long distances – but it’s not bad. She isn’t required to wear her glasses all the time; only if she needs them. He said that she shouldn’t be getting headaches after reading though, and if the glasses don’t help, we will have to take her to the pediatrician.

She seems to like them especially since we let her make the choice!

Excerpts from a Cat's Diary
Day 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling
objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry
cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the
mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture.
Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

Day 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet
while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the
stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once
again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair ... must try this on
their bed.

Day 765 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt
to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into
their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat
I was ... Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

Day 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I
was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning
foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid.
My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

Day 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was
placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I overheard that my
confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and
how to use it to my advantage.

Day 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches.
The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is
obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant,
and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move.
Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured.

But I can wait, it is only a matter of time

A Random Game

The Amazing Race ended, Tom won Survivor, and now Everybody Loves Raymond is over for good. Last night we watched American Idol, which ends next week, and then we watched half of a movie, which we never do on weeknights. We will finish it this afternoon I guess. Tomorrow, The Apprentice ends for another season and so does CSI and ER. I hate to be the bearer of bad news Miss L but tomorrow is Doctor’s Carter’s last night on ER over here. I know that you will miss him, but great ones have come and gone before him and we lived through that (even if I didn’t like it!)!

The kids LOVE playing games more than anything so I have an idea. I think I will write down the names of each game we have on small pieces of paper, fold them up, and put them all in a bowl. Each day of summer vacation we have free (that will be most days), I will pull a random game out of the bowl and we can play. I think they will be thrilled. Today is their first official day off so I need to get that ready. Bye-bye!

What Looks Like Crazy ...

I just finished reading What Looks Like Crazy On An Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage. Mrs. Cleage wrote plays, essays and columns, but this was her first book. As far as I can tell, since this, she has written at least eight more books. I will now be on the lookout for those!

I picked this up at a book sale. What got my attention was “Oprah’s Book Club” embossed on the front cover. I figured if Oprah liked it enough to endorse it, then it must be good … and it was. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

It is about a woman named Ava Johnson who is living with AIDS. She returns back home to visit with her sister before traveling on to San Francisco when things begin to happen. She meets many people in the community and discovers how much she missed her home.

I love the way that Mrs. Cleage describes things. From the way that Ava eats a tomato to the wildflowers near the lake – it is all good. She makes it feel like home.

Uchenna and Joyce

The Amazing Race ended last night. I hope that you all were able to see it. I wanted Rob and Amber to win so badly, but they came in second. Uchenna and Joyce were the big million dollar winners. It’s just as well that they won though, since Rob and Amber already won a million on Survivor. I can see them doing other TV shows to make more money.

I’m glad that Ron and Kelly came in last. She said some truly stupid things to him throughout the show and I think she’s really going to regret that; like telling him that he got out of his obligation with the military because he was a POW. Who ASKS to become a POW? That was just stupid of her and I don’t blame him for not wanting to marry. They argued way too much for me to even consider rooting for them.

If you have never watched this show, but enjoy shows like Survivor, I would highly recommend this when the next season airs. It is a nail-biter!

American Idol was also on last night. In my opinion, they all did an excellent job. I’m having a hard time deciding who I would like to see win. Do you have a favorite?

Words of Wit

From an email:

How come it takes so little time for a child who is afraid of the dark to become a teenager who wants to stay out all night?

Business conventions are important because they demonstrate how many people a company can operate without.

Why is it that at class reunions you feel younger than everyone else looks?

Scratch a dog and you'll find a permanent job.

No one has more driving ambition than the boy who wants to buy a car.

There are no new sins....the old ones just get more publicity.

There are worse things than getting a call for a wrong number at 4 AM. It could be a right number.

Think about this. No one ever says "It's only a game" when his team is winning.

Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail.

The nicest thing about the future is that it always starts tomorrow.

If you don't have a sense of humor, you probably don't have any sense at all.

Seat belts are not as confining as wheelchairs.

I've reached the age where "happy hour" is a nap!

Be careful reading the fine print. There's no way you're going to like it.

The trouble with bucket seats is that not everybody has the same size bucket.

To err is human, to forgive - highly unlikely.

Do you realize that in about 40 years, we'll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos?

Money can't buy happiness-but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Corvette than in a Yugo.

After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching in every joint, you are probably dead.

A Quick Survey

I would like to take a very informal survey dealing with food. My question is this: of the foods listed below, do you prefer them at room temperature (RT), cold (C), or hot (H).

* Tuna Fish (for sandwiches)

* Potato Salad

* Turkey (for Thanksgiving dinner)

* Tossed Salad

* Macaroni Salad

* Pimento Cheese (for sandwiches)

I would like your input on these six items and then I will let you know how I feel. Another person and I were discussing these food items and it seems that they feel completely different than I do. This got me wondering how others feel, so be honest. I can take it if I’m the odd man out ;)

If you have never left a comment, this would be a great time to do so!

Mother's Day

I have had a splendid Mother’s Day. After church, we sat under the Weeping Willow for a while. It was breezy and so beautiful. Dinner was wonderful! I have never had better ribs. It would take a lot to top those.

Here is a picture of what I bought for my mother:

mathersday05 (Custom).JPG

They are lotions from Victoria's Secret. From left to right there is Forbidden Fantasy, Sweet Temptation, Vanilla Lace, Strawberries & Champagne, Endless Love, and Romantic Wish. She will be the best smelling mom there is.

Today's Events

I thought the kids last day of school was supposed to be this coming Friday. It turns out that they have to go until Tuesday the 17th because they had two snow days. I would have thought that allowances were made for a few snow days during scheduling, but apparently, I was wrong.

Some other startling news: our neighbors took their Christmas lights down today, this seventh day of MAY. Gee, I thought they looked great with the newly planted flowers – NOT!

I tried some fabulous ice cream tonight. It was Ben & Jerry’s: Chocolate Therapy. It is made with chocolate ice cream, chocolate cookies, and swirls of chocolate pudding ice cream. Once you eat this, nothing else is going to do! This is truly Chocolate Therapy!

For Mother’s Day Kevin bought me THIS Vera Bradley purse. It’s very colorful and slightly larger than my old one. I love it!

He is also cooking me a Mother’s Day feast tomorrow. We are having Baby Back Ribs, Corn on the Cob, Baked Beans, and Cole Slaw. I’ll let you know how it goes.

The Sandal Promise

This came from a friend via email.

Just a friendly reminder, it's that time of the year again. Please raise your big toes and repeat after me:

As a member of the Faux Paux Sisterhood, I pledge to follow The Rules when I wear sandals and other open-toe shoes:

I promise to always wear sandals that fit. My toes will not hang over and touch the ground, nor will my heels spill over the backs. And the sides and tops of my feet will not pudge out between the straps.

I will go polish-free or vow to keep the polish fresh, intact and chip-free. I will not cheat and just touch up my big toe.

I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow.

I will shave the hairs off my big toe.

I won't wear pantyhose even if my misinformed girlfriend, coworker, mother, sister tells me the toe seam really will stay under my toes if I tuck it there.

If a strap breaks, I won't duct-tape, pin, glue or tuck it back in to place hoping it will stay put. I will get my shoe fixed or toss it. No matter how much it hurts.

I will not live in corn denial; rather I will lean on my good friend Dr. Scholl's if my feet need him.

I will resist the urge to buy jelly shoes at Payless for the low, low price of $4.99 even if my feet are small enough to fit into the kid’s size. This is out of concern for my safety, and the safety of others. No one can walk properly when standing in a pool of sweat, and I would hate to take someone down with me as I fall and break my ankle.

I will take my toe ring off toward the end of the day if my toes swell and begin to look like Vienna sausages.

I will be brutally honest with my girlfriend/sister/coworker when she asks me if her feet are too ugly to wear sandals. Someone has to tell her that her toes look like they've been dragged behind her car on the way to work and no sandal in the world is going to make her feet look good.

I will promise if I wear flip-flops, that I will ensure they actually flip and flop, making the correct noise while walking and I will swear NOT to slide or drag my feet while wearing them.

I will promise to go to my local beauty school at least once per season and have a real pedicure (they are about $15 and worth EVERY penny). I say spend another $15.00 and get an even better one.

I will promise to throw away any white/off-white sandals that show signs of wear...nothing is tackier than dirty white sandals.

Reading Lessons

While driving Ashley to school this morning, I got behind a car that had professional script writing on its back window. “Multiple Organ Donor” is what I THOUGHT it said at first glance. Looking closer, I saw that it really said, “Multiple Orgasm Donor.”

I sat there and wondered who in the world would want to advertise THAT? And why would you want your kids to see that? It was a woman driving and she did drop off a child at Ashley’s school.

I’m just surprised.

What I'm Watching

I still love the new TV show Desperate Housewives. I hate it though that the season is ending very soon and we will have to wait months before we find out more information about Wisteria Lane. The next few episodes are supposed to be full of surprises.

Everybody Loves Raymond only has two more episodes left before the show is put to rest. I will miss the funny characters that I identify so well with. Fortunately, they do play reruns on other channels!

The final episode of The Amazing Race airs next week. I am rooting for Rob and Amber (who also won Survivor). They get along great, work together, and smile constantly. I like that. This is one of my very favorite TV shows. If you haven’t watched it, you’re really missing out on some excitement.

I am still watching American Idol, but it is starting to bore me. They only have five people left (four after tonight) and they have to fill in an hours worth of time. Blah! Blah! Blah! I get this way with this show every time. I cannot help it.

On Survivor, I would like to see either Tom or Ian win the game. They seem like good guys and they work hard.

I still enjoy watching The Apprentice, but I could care less who wins this time. If I had to choose one, I would pick Kendra. When she was the team leader, I believe that she did a good job and seemed to know what was going on. I think that Craig and Tana just drifted by and didn’t really show any spark.

Noah Wyle is leaving E.R. I like Dr. Carter, but I do believe that his time has run out; that’s only because the writers wouldn’t let anything good happen to him.

All three CSI shows are interesting although the original is still tops.

Other shows that I enjoy include: Showdog Moms and Dads (BRAVO), Colonial House (KET2), The Surreal Life (VH1), Growing Up Gotti (A&E), Airline (A&E), Moving Up (TLC), and Trading Spaces (TLC).

What TV shows do you enjoy … or have I named them all?

Graduation & Gore

Kevin is not at home and I know how to use the scanner by myself. He should be afraid – very afraid! Ha! Ha!

Apparently, Deanna, a friend of mine, enjoyed seeing Kevin in my May 1st post, without his beard. So, I figured that she would love seeing another one.

This is Kevin and I after his graduation many years ago:

The first year the school had a Halloween costume contest Kevin decided to dress up. Here he is in all his glory, or should I say gory?

One of his foreign students thought that he was really hurt and wanted to know what had happened to him. It seems that his country didn’t celebrate Halloween, but did have bombings.

Hallmark Hall Of Fame

Last night I taped the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie Riding the Bus with My Sister. Since there was no school today, Ashley and I watched it together this afternoon.

Rosie O’ Donnell was phenomenal! Within the first half hour, Ashley and I went from laughing our butts off, to me having a very large lump in my throat and Ashley crying. Rosie was so convincing. It was great watching her.

If you missed this movie on T.V., the DVD should be available sometime soon. I have already watched it twice today (I watched it again tonight with Kevin). That should tell you something!
