Nice Weather

The rain held off. I didn’t think it was going to, but I said a little prayer and it did.

We walked from house to house for about an hour. Purple and orange lights shone through the darkness. Fog machines and scary music added to the entire trick-or-treating experience.

After walking, we went down to the church where they had an inflatable slide and games set up all over the gym. Ashley ended up getting tons of candy.

The only gripe I have is with the parents who sit in their cars and drive slowly watching their kids go from house to house. If they have a medical reason to stay in their cars, that’s okay, otherwise it’s just lazy. If they want their kids to trick-or-treat, they should walk with them. Other than that, it was a perfect night :)

Labels For Education

Ashley’s school, along with countless other schools across the country, collects Campbell's Soup labels. As far as I understand it, the school then turns these in to the company. The more labels they collect, the more stuff they are eligible to receive for the school.

The last time I turned in labels was at the end of Ashley’s third grade year, around May 2004. We have been saving them again ever since. I always know when it’s once again time to donate when my gallon-size Ziploc bag refuses to close.

I decided this afternoon would make the perfect time to clip the labels down to a manageable size, count them, and then put them into a new bag for Ashley to take to school tomorrow. Andrew was a blessing with this process! It would have taken me forever had he not helped.

labels2006%20%28Custom%29.jpg

The final count was 500. Ashley has 500 labels to turn in tomorrow. I thought you might be interested to know which soups we buy the most, thus giving us the most labels. Yes, I divided them all out, wrote them down, and tallied each group separately. I couldn’t help myself! Chalk it up to a little OCD.

We had:

215 Bean & Bacon
58 Chicken Noodle
37 Family Size: Vegetable Beef
37 Cream of Mushroom
34 Cream of Chicken
22 Chicken with White & Wild Rice
17 Vegetable Beef
14 Old Fashioned Vegetable

Although the remainder of the labels numbered 7 and below for each one, there were 24 more varieties of soup. I didn’t know they made that many different kinds of soup!

Our friend, Shannon, once again invited us to Trick-or-Treat down at the Boonesboro campground. It was much colder this year, but still lots of fun. You can see the photo gallery HERE. There are 21 pictures on two pages. As always, click to enlarge. You can actually click twice to enlarge the pictures.

Seasonal Food

There are foods that we only have at certain times during the year. For instance, I typically only make potato salad and macaroni salad during the spring and summer months. I only buy popsicles and cold treats when it’s hot outside. However, ice cream is different; it is purchased year-round even if it’s freezing outside. It cannot be avoided, especially when Edy's comes out with pumpkin, apple pie and later on, peppermint. Kevin has to have those.

The grill is used during the winter, but not as frequently as during the summer months. After an entire summer of cheeseburgers once a week, I don’t want those. Steaks are okay, but I’m not really much of a steak person and ribs would cool off too quickly before making it back into the house.

Fall and winter are times for special things like, vegetable soup, brown beans and cornbread, chili, and turkey or beef hash. I finished off the roasted pumpkin seeds yesterday and the sausage balls are almost gone too. When we’re feeling snacky, I bake a cookie sheet full of sausage balls in the oven. A plate –full like the one below doesn’t last long:

sausageballs%20%28Custom%29.jpg

Towards Thanksgiving, we will make homemade Chex Mix, Christmas Fudge, Seasoned Oyster Crackers, Baked Cinnamon Pecans, and much more.

I don’t know why I don’t fix these things during the summer. I could, but I guess food is one more thing that adds to the holidays. It makes it special. Sausage balls during a summer picnic would be weird for me and I don’t know that I would enjoy them near as much. Does anyone else feel this way?

I Love Books!

Do you see a problem?

Although it doesn’t appear so, I have read most of the books from the first photo. I read anywhere from two to four books a month. Knowing this, you would think the pile would have decreased from almost two years ago.

One of my problems is, I have so many authors I am interested in; I don’t want to read only one book they have written; I want to read them all!

At this moment, Mitch Albom has a new book out that I am dying to get my hands on. I’m trying to wait until the next time we visit The Book Cellar to look for it so I can get it cheaper. However, if I’m in any bookstores soon, I may just go ahead and buy it. It’s only around $11 anyway.

See, that’s another problem. I’m already reading something else and I know I won’t get to Albom’s new book until later, but I still have to have it now. I think I’m afraid that I’ll forget about it if I don’t buy it and then I’ll never read it. That’s valid reasoning, don’t you think?

Right now I’m reading Agatha Christie: An Autobiography and loving every minute of it. It’s wonderful to live vicariously through another person. I will be sad when it’s over.

I guess if books are my only vice, then I am doing okay. (We won’t discuss the chocolate.) I will continue to buy and the stack will rise higher, but one of these days, I will get caught up. You’ll see!

The Scariest

This morning, Bob & Sheri listed the top 10 scariest movies. I don’t know who compiled the list, but here it is:

Top 10 Scariest movies

10 Alien

9 Planet of the Apes

8 Candy Man

7 Psycho

6 A Nightmare on Elm Street

5 Jaws

4 Halloween

3. The Shining

2 Rosemary’s Baby

1 The Exorcist

I’ll admit, I haven’t seen all of those movies, but some of the ones I have seen on that list aren’t scary. Jaws? Do you think Jaws is scary?

Here are some movies that aren’t necessarily scary to me, but I find extremely creepy:

Cape Fear – Robert De Niro was flat out scary in this movie, especially when he says, “Come out, come out, wherever you are.”

The Ring – When that girl climbs out of the television set, I about die. Hugh Hefner had a haunted house set up last year and they had this scene from The Ring set up in one room. I wouldn’t even want to walk past it! It totally freaks me out.

The Grudge – I’ve already told you how I feel about this one. I don’t want to see any more creepy things crawling down staircases!

The Silence of the Lambs – Towards the end when Jodie Foster is in the pitch-black house with Buffalo Bill the psycho serial killer – he can see, but she can’t – that was scary.

The Vanishing - This movie was more intense than anything, but after it was over, I thought about it for days. It still disturbs me to think about it.

Burnt Offerings - This for me, is a classic creepy movie and it has Bette Davis. You just can’t beat Bette Davis.

The Nanny - Speaking of Bette Davis, this is one of her classics from 1965. If you’ve never seen it, you need to. It’s very creepy.

Boxing Helena - I’m not even going to say anything about this movie. If you rent it, don’t read the back of the box because it might give away something. This movie is SO warped; you just have to see it.

I’m sure there are more, but I can’t think of any right now. Are there any movies in particular that freak you out?

Nightmares

Kevin and I got the biggest kick out of this yesterday.

We were in Target and Kevin spotted these footed pajamas in the BOYS department. They are a size 14, but appear long enough for a full-sized man!

thisisfunny%20%28Custom%29.jpg

What kid would want to wear this? With feet?! I laughed yesterday and I’m still laughing now. Not only was that funny, but it also cracked me up when my aunt, seeing me pull my camera from my purse said, “I don’t know you all.”

I laughed hysterically.

Anytime I see footed pajamas, I think of THIS getup from A Christmas Story.

Yep. It’s Ralphie the pink nightmare.

Tonight, we made Eyeball and Spider cupcakes. The photo gallery contains 18 pictures on two pages.

Afterwards, we watched Halloween. Believe it or not, it was the first time I had seen it all the way through. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Do The Dogcatcher

For dinner last night, I made a large pot of vegetable soup. Technically, it’s vegetable beef, but I call it vegetable anyway. It was delicious; so delicious in fact, that I had another bowl for lunch this afternoon.

veggiesoup%20%28Custom%29.jpg

It warmed me right up on this chilly day.

*****

Ashley went to her first dance this afternoon, after school. It was held at the middle school Andrew attended years ago. There were fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. It looked as though they had several hundred kids attend. I know Ashley is only ten years old, but I wasn’t worried about her. This is a good school and they always have plenty of supervision by school employees and parents. In addition, I feel it’s good for her to be around kids from other schools here in the county.

She came out smiling and said she had a great time. I was probably thirteen when I attended my first dance. I was in junior high and the dance was at night in a school that no longer stands, which breaks my heart.

The gym was dark except for flashing, colored lights and the music was very loud. I remember having to scream at my friends in order to carry on a conversation. At that age, most boys were too embarrassed to ask a girl to dance, but we didn’t care. We formed our own circle of girls and danced together. The song “The Dog” was very popular. I don’t remember doing any dirty dancing, but I know I saw some!

I can clearly remember my dad walking in the gym dressed in his police uniform. He worked nights and he was coming to check on me and make sure I was having a good time. I guess this would have embarrassed a lot of kids, but not me. I was proud that everyone knew that was “Tami’s dad”. He watched us dance for a few minutes and then left. Later that night, he kidded me about the way we had danced which made me laugh. I bet if I asked him right now to show me how we danced, he would still remember. Parents do tend to remember things like that.

Maybe next time, I’ll sneak in and watch Ashley.

A Few Fall Crafts

Last week, Ashley made this cute scarecrow pail at the library. It’s a great place to keep some extra candy!

Tonight, for a fall clay creation, she made this leaf man:

I think the only thing he’s missing is a magnet on his back; that way, he could hang out on the refrigerator.

Ski Season

This was sent to me in email. I have never been skiing, but can only imagine this is the way things are in reality:

HOW TO PREPARE NOW FOR NEXT WINTER'S SKI SEASON

10. Visit your local butcher and pay $10 to sit in his walk-in freezer for half an hour. Afterwards, burn two $50 dollar bills to warm up.

9. Go to the nearest hockey rink and walk across the ice 20 times in your ski boots carrying two pairs of skis, accessory bag and poles. Pretend you are looking for your car.

8. For ski boot simulation at home, put a pebble in your street shoes and tighten a C-clamp around your toes.

7. Buy a pair of gloves and immediately throw one away.

6. Go to McDonald's and insist on paying $6.50 for a hamburger. Be sure to wait in the longest line.

5. Clip a lift ticket to the zipper of your jacket and ride a motorcycle fast enough to make the ticket lacerate your face.

4. Drive slowly for five hours - anywhere - as long as it's in a snowstorm and you're following an 18 wheeler.

3. Fill a blender with ice, hit the pulse button and let the spray blast your face. You'd almost believe you're skiing in front of a snowmaker!

2. Dress up in as many clothes as you can and then proceed to take them off because you have to go to the bathroom.

1. Repeat all of the above every Saturday and Sunday.

I Remember ...

The kids returned to school today. They were off all last week for their fall break. When I was in school, we never had a fall break. We were out a few days during Thanksgiving and then a few weeks during Christmas.

When the weather became warmer and we all thought we were going to die because we were so sick of school; spring break would come. It was a glorious and well-received week, especially since we had Achievement Tests the entire week beforehand.

Actually, Achievement Test week wasn’t bad. My teacher would allow us to bring a sack lunch and a soft drink in a can for lunch. Drinking a soft drink for lunch was a BIG DEAL. I could hardly wait for lunch to come!

The testing never lasted all day either. Since the teachers weren’t supposed to put any undue stress on us during this week, there was no actual teaching – no spelling tests – no extra of anything, so after testing was complete for the day, we went outside to play. My elementary school had an awesome playground (and still does). The playground is where many friendships were formed, so I am thankful for that time.

When I was off for spring break, my parents still had to work. I believe back then my dad was on the night shift, so he would sleep most of the day. It was as if he wasn’t there, so my sister and I did as we pleased.

We were good, trustworthy kids though and didn’t get into any trouble. I can clearly remember making Campbell’s vegetable soup for lunch and watching The Price Is Right and Love Connection. Why don’t they do Love Connection any longer? That show was one hilarious train wreck after another!

I would play with my Barbie’s for hours on end. I had the Barbie Dream House, the Townhouse, and two Corvettes, tons of furniture, the Dream Cottage, and lots more. If I had a toy room right now, I would play Barbies. That’s the truth.

When I wasn’t playing with Barbies by myself or with my sister, I would have a friend over. We would watch TV or listen to music. We had a tape player along with a record player, so while I was playing a record, we could record ourselves singing on the tape player. I can still her us wailing out Michael Jackson’s Human Nature. I wish I had kept those tapes.

I do still have two class pictures.
Here is the one from third grade. I am on the top row, seventh person:

grade3%20%28Custom%29.jpg

This is the one from sixth grade. I am in the second row from the top, wearing the red, blue, yellow, white, and green striped sweater:

grade6%20%28Custom%29.jpg

I know they are hard to see, but if I made them any bigger, it would mess up the site. If any of my classmates should happen to see these, I will email you larger copies if you would like them. I would like copies of the fourth and fifth grade class pictures if anyone has them. Email me!

Double The Fun

We bought two pumpkins. I fully expected to only carve one tonight, but there weren’t enough seeds. (I have to save the seeds to roast!) So, we ended up carving both.

Poetry

My son, Andrew, wrote the following poem on October 4th and I thought you might enjoy it.

Poetry’s just not my thing.

To talk of dreams and dragons wings,
To catalog the suns and moons,
With fairy tales that end too soon,
Waterfalls that may be rain,
The dripping drops to go insane,
The mindlessness making matter more,
And how the day can be a bore.

Poetry’s just not my thing.

Writing words that sings a song,
That plays in your head for far too long,
Spring dreams and weaving worlds,
That leaves you helpless, ravaged: curled.
Dark abyss and traveled lore,
Leaving you breathless, wanting more.

Poetry’s just not my thing.

Filling notebooks for days on end,
Spilling feelings forcing to bend,
Lightning strikes across the sky,
Thunder never shares its eye.
Clashing paper against the pen,
As poetry makes us women and men

Poetry’s just my thing.

Inky

We took Guido to the Arboretum for the first time yesterday. This was something that I wanted to do since our last trip back in August.

We took him there because there is beautiful scenery while you walk along a paved path:

rosestrees%28Custom%29.jpg

There is no place in Winchester that has anything like this, so it will be worth the trip every now and again.

After walking about a mile, Guido was ready to relax and we were ready to be on our way.

You can see him here sucking all the cold air from the vents in the truck:

We went to PetSmart where we bought him his first Bow Wow Beanie. Yes, they now make Beanie Babies for dogs!

We bought Inky the octopus:

As you can see, Guido loves it!

Stacey's Questions

Stacey asked ten questions of bloggers. I thought they were so good that I have posted them here along with my answer to each one.

1) Why did you start blogging? What was your motivation?

In all honesty it started with Chris Pirillo. Most of you probably have no clue who he is. He started a newsletter called Lockergnome back in the ninety’s. Kevin got the newsletter in email everyday. It was free and packed full of useful Internet sites and tips for computer success (It still is!). Anyway, one day Chris had his own blog and his then wife’s blog listed. I clicked and was hooked forever. Actually, that didn’t answer the question at all. Those were the first blogs I ever read or knew about.

Okay, those blogs got me curious about who else was out there doing the same thing. Somehow, I came upon another blog that I loved. It was called Girl On A Bus. I fell in love with the way she wrote and the things she wrote about. From her family, to nature, to the jobs she had held – it was all impressive and all interesting. I began leaving comments on her posts and one day she asked me why I didn’t have a blog and then encouraged me to start one. It was a few months later, but I did start one. It looks the same today as it did all those years ago. Have I mentioned I do not like change? ;)

2) If no one ever read your blog, would you still continue to blog?

Hmm, probably not. I would probably record certain life details on the computer, but not on the Internet for the world to see. I would still take loads of pictures, but it definitely would not be the same.

3) Are there specific areas of your life that you don't blog about, or do you feel like nothing is too personal to blog about?

Unfortunately, I have not blogged about certain things that have happened to me in the last five months. This isn’t my choice though. I feel that I would be sued if I said all that I wanted to say, so I choose to not say anything rather than leave something out.

That is in my life, but the life of my relatives is different. I would never post anything that I thought might embarrass or humiliate them. I am always very aware of the things I tell, but believe me people, things can be the equivalent of a three-ring circus sometimes.

I do have a family member who could care less what I write about her. I don’t though because she tells it all on herself, so I figure it’s old news.

4) Do you sometimes add a blog to your blogroll simply because that particular blogger added you to theirs?

I have before, yes. What kills me though is the people who I do have on the blogroll who never update. I think it would be better to update once a week than not for a month or more. If that’s going to be the case, they should post something saying they will be on vacation for a bit.

I had one guy on my blogroll years ago when I first started. He didn’t update for over a month, so I dropped him from my list. When he came back to the blogging world and saw what I had done, he dropped my blog from his list. I’m sure it hurt his feelings, but how was I to know that he was taking a break?

5) Would you consider it offensive or rude if you repeatedly commented on someone's blog, and they never commented on yours? If so/not, why/why not?

No, because this is the case with several of my daily reads. I may have a huge interest in them, but they might find me totally dull.

6) Do you ever feel pressured to post just to give your readers something to see?

I have felt pressure before just knowing there are people who visit me everyday. I want them to be pleased. Then again, if I don’t want to post – I don’t.

7) Would you ever consider meeting a fellow blogger in person? Why or why not?

Absolutely! As a matter of fact, I will go so far as to say that I would trust anyone on my blogroll to spend the night in my house. I have been reading most of these people for years, so if they were evil, I think I would have spotted it by now.

8) Have you ever considered deleting your blog, only to keep it going so as not to disappoint your readers?

Yes, I have considered deleting it, but it was for the wrong reasons and I see that now. Disappointing my readers had nothing to do with it though. I don’t feel that I have an abundance of readers anyway, so that aspect didn’t come into play.

9) Is there any situation that would ever cause you to stop blogging?

Yes. If I felt for one second my family was in any kind of danger, I would stop. Actually, I would notify the police, and then stop.

You know what though, if I “just got tired” of doing it or considered it a chore, I would stop. For me blogging is an outlet, but it’s also fun.

10) Have you made any close friends in the blogging world, a person you feel as if you have really connected with?

Yes, but I haven’t asked for any phone numbers as the long distance calls would be astronomical!

I have a question of my own to add:

11) If people close to you, know that you blog, do any of them ever make requests, things they want you to tell about? If so, do you grant their wish?

Okay, now I will answer my own question.

Yes! I have been requested to tell certain stories or post certain pictures. Actually, only one person has asked me to do this, but I have never done it.

I would love to hear what others have to say now!

Graves Galore

Yesterday, I had a huge urge to make something very Halloween-like. Kevin came up with the idea of making a cake that looked like a graveyard.

After a quick trip to Wal-Mart, we had the supplies.

Here is Ashley decorating a tombstone:

Here is the finished Graveyard Cake:

It was delicious!

Movies: Take 4

September movies:

9-1-06 The Pink Panther
I never knew The Pink Panther was a diamond! Don’t worry, I’m not spoiling anything; you find this out in the very beginning. This is a cute, silly movie.

9-3-06 Shrek
Yes, I have seen Shrek before, but I watched it again, so I documented it. We watched it on our way to Kings Island in the tour bus. I love this movie. I don’t care how old you are, you will think it’s hilarious.

9-3-06 RV
We watched this on the return trip from Kings Island later on that night. It was a very funny, family movie.

9-6-06 The Grudge
I was fine. Really, I was. That was until the last 15 minutes or so of this movie. Once I saw something, (I won’t say what) slinking down a staircase – I was gone – scared to death. It was a sight I remembered for days. Truly, it was reminiscent of parts in The Ring.

9-8-06 Dark Water
I don’t know what emotions the makers of this movie intended for me to walk away with in the end. The entire movie was bizarre, which is okay in a movie. I liked this aspect, but by the end, I was just sad. The entire ending saddened me and made me fall deep into my own thoughts.

9-10-06 Con Air
I hadn’t seen this movie for many years, but I remembered that I liked it, so I watched it again with Andrew and Selena. I love watching John Malkovich.

I have to make a comparison right now though about someone in this movie.
Look carefully at this picture of:

Steve Buscemi

Okay, now scroll down on this page to look at a picture from Nickelodeon’s new TV show Mr. Meaty. I would have sent you directly to the Nickelodeon site; however, it takes FOREVER to load. You’ll want to look at the guy on the left:

Josh Redgrove

I’m telling you people, they modeled that puppet after Steve Buscemi. No doubt.

Back to the movies …

9-13-06 From Hell
Our friend, Deanna, loaned this movie to us. I had never heard of it, but enjoyed it quite a bit. It amazes me how many different characters Johnny Depp can convincingly play.

9-15-06 Pretty Woman
Ashley had never seen this movie, so I wanted us to watch it together. Looking back at it now, I guess it’s not the type of movie a mother watches with her ten-year-old daughter. Oh well, I’m definitely not like every mother and Ashley is not your typical ten-year-old.

9-27-06 Gosford Park
This is a murder mystery set at a country house in England. I loved it! What could be better?!

9-30-06 Failure to Launch
I enjoyed this romantic comedy even though it was very predictable. Both Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey were great!

Okay, I am all caught up! From now on, I will post the movies I have seen during the previous month, at the beginning of the new month. This way, I won’t be so backed up.

In The News ...

I just read about the Hypoallergenic cat story on Pewari’s Prattle.

This is good news for those who are allergic, but I wonder, what will they think of next?! And, what are scientists working on right now that we have no idea about?

Movies: Take 3

But wait, there’s more!

8-3-06 V for Vendetta
This is one of Andrew’s favorite movies. I enjoyed it, but I think I would understand it a lot more by watching it a second time.

8-8-06 Holes
Ashley had been asking me forever to watch this with her, so I finally did. It was actually a good movie.

8-10-06 The Bishop's Wife
This movie did more for me than I can explain. It was good and innocent and I watched it at a time when I needed a mental healing of sorts. The story takes place during Christmas and I needed a little of that Christmas spirit back in the first weeks of August.

8-18-06 The McCourts of New York
This is a documentary based on the McCourt family. Frank McCourt is the author of Angela’s Ashes as well as others. As you well know, I adore his writing, so I had to order this documentary from Barnes & Noble.

8-24-06 Postcards from the Edge
This was a fun movie to watch. There were many famous faces and they were all so young!

**I have no date for this because there were so many episodes and we watched them all summer whenever we could. We watched all five seasons of Six Feet Under
It takes a very open mind to watch this show because there are so many things that could be offensive. I loved the show and would own the entire series (they are $80 each!), but some people would gasp in shock at some of the things that go on, not to mention the language.

That was all the movies for August. I guess with school beginning, it was an adjustment to get back on schedule.

*****

I want to share this joke with you that someone sent me in email. It’s not PC, but I think it’s hilarious.

The Arab & The Jew

A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was plodding through the Afghanistan desert when he saw something far off in the distance.

Hoping to find water, he walked toward the object, only to find a little old Jewish man sitting at a card-table with neckties laid out on it. The Arab asked, "My thirst is killing me. Do you have water?"

The Jewish man replied, "I have no water. Would you like to buy a tie? They are only $150. This one goes very nicely with your robes."

The Arab shouted, "Idiot! I do not need an overpriced tie. I need water!"

"OK," said the old Jew, "it does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie, and that you insult me. I will show you that you have not offended me. If you walk over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find a lovely restaurant! Go! Walk that way! The restaurant has all the water you need!"

The Arab staggered away toward the hill and eventually disappeared. Four hours later the Arab came crawling back to where the Jewish man was sitting at his table. The Jew said, "I told you, about two miles over that hill. Could you not find it?

"I found it all right," rasped the Arab. "Your brother won't let me in without a tie!!

Movies: Take 2

Continuing from yesterday’s post:

7-2-06 The Ring Two
After watching the first Ring movie and being scared to death, I really had high expectations for the second one. Let me tell you, it wasn’t that scary – not at all like the first one. It was a decent movie, but not what I had prepared myself for.

7-2-06 The Family Stone
This was a cute, romantic comedy with lots of famous names.

7-3-06 Monster-in-Law
This was another romantic comedy – predictable, but cute.

7-5-06 Bewitched
I really do love Nicole Kidman. Words cannot describe how wonderful she was in Cold Mountain, The Hours, The Others, and Moulin Rouge. I am sorry to say, this movie was painful to watch. I had to make myself sit there for the ending it was so bad. I don’t blame her although she shouldn’t have accepted the part; I blame the writers.

7-6-06 Proof
This movie was slow. It was interesting – a one-time movie – but very slow.

7-7-06 The World According to Garp
I had just finished reading this book and had to see the movie. My advice is, DO NOT judge the book by this movie. The book was fantastic and I will read it again. The movie was a one-time thing that had much to be desired. Actually, I didn't care for it at all.

7-14-06 Wedding Crashers
Here is a movie with many famous names that was also very funny.

7-14-06 Being Julia
This was such a wonderful movie! If you enjoy period movies set on foreign soil, you will enjoy this.

7-15-06 When a Stranger Calls
I knew the story behind this movie, but I still wanted to see it and I’m glad I did. I was on the edge of my seat for the last 15 minutes.

7-17-06 Angela's Ashes
This is another example of me reading a book and wanting to see the movie. This time though, the movie did not disappoint. If you don’t feel up to reading the book, I recommend you at least watch the movie. It is a great representation of the book and was worth watching.

7-20-06 Memoirs of a Geisha
This is Ashley’s favorite movie and I don’t blame her. It is a wonderful story with beautiful costumes and great characters. I will definitely watch it again. If you see it, I recommend keeping the subtitles turned on, just so you don’t miss anything.

Those were all the movies I saw in July.

Movies: Take 1

I have been very remiss about keeping you up to date on what movies I am watching. I feel if I don’t spend the next few days playing catch-up, I may never list them at all. So, here’s the beginning of the inventory. It started out as a “summer movie list”.

5-27-06 The Longest Yard
This movie had a good soundtrack. It was predictable, but fun to watch once.

6-4-06 Walk the Line
This movie was full of great music. How could it not be? It is about Johnny Cash!

6-7-06 The Exorcism of Emily Rose
I loved this movie because it was scary, but not gory, so I didn’t have to cover my eyes.

6-14-06 Mr. & Mrs. Smith
The best thing about this movie is getting to watch the two most beautiful people on the planet for two hours!

6-18-06 The Jacket
This movie was freaky and I loved it. Adrian Brody was fantastic!

6-21-06 Trainspotting
Watching this will show you just how bad drugs are.

6-22-06 Crash
This movie had a good cast, but I don’t know that I would see it again.

6-26-06 Second Chorus
This one would have been better had it not been so long and drawn out.

6-27-06 Uptown Girls
A very feel-good movie - I love Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning.

6-28-06 The Interpreter
This wasn’t one of Nicole Kidman’s best movies. It just didn’t do anything for me.

6-29-06 Little Black Book
Another Brittany Murphy movie – this is cute and funny. I would categorize it as a great “date” movie.

This is only the first 11 ...

Project: Shelters Part II

Here it is!

indianshelters%20%28Custom%29.jpg

You would never guess that $40 went into making it, but it did. We didn’t have any of the suggested materials and had to buy everything. Popsicle sticks, paint, moss, different types of paper, Indians, foam board, different sized boxes …. It all came to $40.

I carried it in for Ashley this morning. It’s not due until Thursday, but I didn’t have the room to leave it sitting here for two more days. You can’t even imagine how many times I moved those four shelters in the past week!

Now, we await the grade. I will let you know how it goes.

** By the way, lest you think it is odd that we spent so much money; I ran into another parent at school and she said she also spent $40.

Another Thing

I know that there is wickedness in this world, that’s why I like familiarity. I would rather be home late at night then out where something could happen. I expect the same of my children.

With that being said, there are some things I cannot stand to watch or hear on TV.

* I don’t like to hear of any child abuse or child deaths from abuse.

* I don’t want to hear about some girl throwing her baby in the dumpster or leaving it behind in the stall of some bathroom.

* I don’t like hearing about the mentally handicapped being abused.

* I cannot watch the hidden videos where parents have taped the babysitter abusing their child while they are away and I really don’t even want to hear any details.

* I cannot bear to watch TV shows featuring car crashes. These shows don’t make me sad, they do however, put me under tremendous stress.

* I cannot watch police videos where someone is beating someone else (it doesn’t matter which side of the law they are on).

I stay away from this type of news. It has the ability to make me so sad I cry myself to sleep, so I try to avoid it if possible.

Last night, I couldn’t make myself change the channel because what I was seeing and hearing was so appalling.

60 Minutes did a segment on teenagers who “bumhunt”.

This means they hunt down bums (homeless people = people who live on the streets). Once they find a homeless person, they proceed to beat him, hit him with metal rods, shoot paintballs at him, catch him on fire, etc. Death may result.

The teenagers heard about this from videos called BUMFIGHTS. (I am only linking to them so you can judge for yourself how bad they are.) Apparently, these videos are sold everywhere. The things that happen on the videos are REAL, not pretend.

The maker of these videos pays homeless people to do harmful stunts in exchange for alcohol and money, normally as little as $2. These videos also show teenagers fighting.

They interviewed a boy that was sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing a homeless man during one of these attacks. He and four other boys beat the man on and off for three hours until the man was dead. He and his friends thought it was fun.

To me, this is unbelievable, sick, and wicked. I encourage you to click HERE to read the full story.

This is another horrible thing to add to my list.

Living In Arizona

It was on.

Then, it was off.

It was on again.

Then, it was off again.

Now, it’s back on.

The air-conditioning; it’s driving me crazy!

We’ve had some much cooler days lately, so it only makes sense to turn the air off. However, every time I say, - the air is not coming back on this year – it gets hot again.

This afternoon we came home from church, opened every window and even the French doors and it was still too hot. You know, the hotter it gets, the less you want to move, cook, or do anything and I couldn’t handle that today. I am making roast, potatoes, cole slaw, and cornbread for dinner, so it absolutely cannot be hot in here or no one will want to eat. That’s one more thing that’s hard to do when it’s too hot – eat.

****

Yesterday we did some much needed shopping for Ashley. She needed a jacket and after going to every store in town (it felt like it), we found one at JC Penney made by the Arizona Jean Company that we all agreed on:

denim1%28Custom%29.jpg

We also went ahead and bought her Halloween costume at Party City.
THIS is what she will be. She found it herself online and we didn’t want to wait because if you wait, all the good costumes are gone. We bought some fish net stocking to go with it and she already has the black boots. She’s going to look awesome!

We bought many other things, but I won’t bore you. I’m happy. It was a successful shopping day. Now all she needs is a winter coat.
