The Same Page
Years ago, Kevin and I made resolutions for the following year on New Year’s Eve. He would have his sheet of paper and I would have mine. After writing down our resolutions, we would share them with each other and see how many items on the list were the same. Then, we would seal the pages in an envelope and keep them pinned to a bulletin board until the following New Year’s Eve.
We quit making resolutions in 2000. Kevin simply stated that we had been making the same resolutions every year, so why bother. I knew he was right and agreed.
I did, however keep our sheets of those resolutions in their original envelopes and looked at them tonight. Kevin was right; we did make the same resolutions every year:
* Loose weight
* Read more
* Pay off one bill or more
* Decorate a room
* Quit smoking
Those five resolutions were made every year along with a few more.
* Loose weight: We never lost weight. We actually have gained about 30 pounds each.
* Read more: This is one we both have accomplished, especially me. I read more now than I ever have and am very proud of this.
* Pay off one bill or more: Hmmm. This one actually makes me laugh in some sick way. We’re doing well if we don’t ADD more than two bills a year.
* Decorate a room: We accomplished this one. Now I want to redecorate some rooms!
* Quit smoking: In all of our years of making resolutions, we never quit smoking. However, we both did quit smoking four years ago. I have said it many times before: quitting smoking was the hardest thing I have ever done. Some people think I would pick it up again if I had the fancy, but I wouldn’t. I would never want to go through that torment again. Never.
So, our family doesn’t make New Year’s resolutions. Like Stacey, if I want to do something, I’ll do it. It doesn’t have to begin at the New Year. You should go read what her thoughts are on resolutions. The title of this entry on her blog is “30 Pounds.” She and I are on the same page.

Enjoying Christmas Things
My mom bought me these Peace Frogs pajama pants for Christmas:

They are lightweight and very comfortable.
My dad bought me these Nightmare Before Christmas figures to add to the old ones on my desk:

I’m sure when my nieces come for a visit, they will want to play with them!
Last night, Kevin, Ashley, and I played the Spongebob Game of Life we had bought her for Christmas:

I had to have everything explained to me because I had only played The Game of Life once and that was at a friend’s house when I was in seventh grade. It was lots of fun even if Kevin did win. Humph!

Be Happy
It’s been a while since I’ve talked about a book I have really liked. Granted, I have read some wonderful books in the past few months; I just didn’t blog about them. For example, A Son of the Circus by John Irving was excellent. It’s a massive book, but absolutely enthralling. It is a book that you don’t want to start reading half-heartedly. You’ll want to dig into that one with gusto.
I want to recommend another kind of book right now though. This one is light, funny, and only 216 pages; not bad for those who are only able to read in short spurts.
The name of the book is:

You may recall back in April when I blogged about meeting the author at the book signing at Joseph Beth. She is one of the hosts on the Bob & Sheri show, which I have mentioned oodles of times. I listen to their radio show every morning. This is a plus, because while reading the book, I could hear her voice in my head.
Why has it taken me so long to get around to reading it? Well, I have to be in the mood for something. Sometimes I want a good murder-mystery – these would be Agatha Christie books, other times I want drama (like in the TV shows Dallas or Knots Landing) – these would be Sidney Sheldon books, when I’m feeling really peeved at someone, a good Stephen King is always in order, and then sometimes I want humor. This book is filled with chapter after chapter of real happenings in Sheri’s life.
She has two young daughters and a stepson who stays with them on the weekends and her life is filled with one humorous incident after another. When she ended this book, one daughter was four, and the other two years old. I can only hope she is documenting their fun adventures right now. I want to read more!

Friends
I have been too busy to post something today. We ran a few errands and I cleaned.
Tonight, Kevin and I are watching a movie and Ashley has a friend over for the night:

I'm Getting Old So I'm Going To Talk About My Body Functions
Since the weather has become colder, when I walk outside, I can literally feel my face tighten and get dry. It’s true. I think this process has begun happening in the past two years, but this year is worse. If I’m 34 now and it’s this bad, I can’t even fathom 40.
I have now started a nighttime beauty process. Before going to bed, I take Vaseline and rub it over my nose, forehead, and cheeks. It’s goopy and it doesn’t feel good, but I know it helps with dry skin.

After this, I use hand lotion (it’s Victoria’s Secret right now) over my heels and elbows. I use a great dollop on my hands for good measure. For some reason, my knuckles have decided they want to be dry all the time also.
Last night after all this was complete; I turned on the electric mattress cover. It was cold and I needed to get warm, so I only turned the fan on low. We keep a fan on in our room year round because we have to have the noise when we sleep. Those of you accustomed to a fan in the bedroom will understand.
I was whiney last night; tired, whiney and didn’t think I could keep my eyes open a second longer.
Once the lights were out, I snuggled down in the bed. The pillow was in a perfect position under my head and my body was sheltered from the cold that lay outside the blankets. Mind you, my hair was stuck to my cheek, which was stuck to the pillow because of all the Vaseline I had put there, but I didn’t care. I was ready for sleep.
Then, it happened. I knew what it was in a flash. I heard “Mr. Pepper Jack” begin calling my name.
Let me explain.
Hours earlier, Kevin brought a spread of Summer Sausage, Pepper Jack Cheese and crackers to eat on the bed while we watched TV. I looked over and eyeballed it all, so he offered to get enough for both of us.
Needless to say, I ate a fair share of crackers topped with summer sausage and Pepper Jack cheese. It was good and very filling and at that point, I thought nothing of eating it at 10 PM.
So, there I was hours later, perfectly comfortable and ready for sleep when Mr. Pepper Jack called me. He demanded my presence at the porcelain throne – immediately.
Bloody Hell!
By the time I walked out of there, I was wide-awake, not to mention hot and sweaty. Oh, and that lotion I had just put on my hands was washed off upon leaving the bathroom. As I walked past the fan, I turned it up to medium and the electric mattress cover was turned OFF.
Now, I lay there with no blankets on (I threw them all over Kevin. After all, he had been the cause of the Pepper Jack.), thinking, “How could I have been tired?”
Mr. Pepper Jack was relentless and he actually demanded my appearance at the porcelain throne THREE more times. I don’t know why I even bothered with the hand lotion!
You would think all this getting in and out of bed would bother Kevin and Guido while they slept. Not a chance! Kevin was dead to the world and Guido was sawing logs. Neither one of them moved!
A short bit later, Ashley decided she wanted to sleep with me. She didn’t stay long though. For one thing, she was freezing and I wouldn’t let her pull the blankets over us. Another thing is, I insist on holding her around her waist. I normally hold a pillow while I sleep, but if she’s going to occupy that space, she has to let me hold her.
I imagine trying to hold her is like trying to keep a live cockroach on a spoon. You can’t do it – or it would be very hard.
After laughing with her for a while, she left. I do think Kevin woke up for a short spurt while we were laughing and shaking the bed because he nudged me with his foot.
And I wonder why I need a nap during the day!

Sorting
I slept in for the first time in a while this morning. I don’t know why, but once I get up, it’s very hard to go back to sleep. I think that’s mainly due to me thinking about things. I begin thinking about what work has to be done around the house or places I want to go, etc. It could be I was simply exhausted from the hectic activity of days on end.
Today I completed a lot, but if you looked around my house you wouldn’t be able to tell. I was actually online for a few hours catching up with what everyone else did for Christmas. I love looking through all the pictures and hearing about the food and gifts. I also had a ton of email to sort through.
We did some rearranging in both Andrew and Ashley’s rooms. This not only entailed moving furniture, it also involved dusting, picking up items, sorting through them and so on. It takes much longer than you would expect.
Besides watching an episode of Star Trek TNG, I spent a greater part of the evening listening to music. I started off with Christmas music and ended with the Disco CDs I got Sunday night. I am now ready for some light reading. Good-night.

Eve 06'
Together, the family made the decision to open all gifts on Christmas Eve.
We gathered at mom and dad’s house and had little smokies, a cheese ball, peanuts, oyster crackers, sausage balls, Ritz cracker date delight, Paula Deen’s sweet bacon wraps, buffalo chicken wing dip with tortilla chips, mini cheesecake presents, roasted cinnamon pecans, and a summer sausage and cheese plate.
I have to say that this was a great year of presents for Kevin and me. He got a PSP (PlayStation Portable), a big, black Sunbeam mixer, and Cooks Essentials Bake Ware. Mom and dad say this stuff is for the both of us, but it is Kevin who will reap the most from these gifts and I am SO happy for him!
I, on the other hand, was ecstatic over other things such as Estee Lauder’s Youth Dew perfume, a 3-disk CD set called Forever Disco, a Nightmare Before Christmas figurine set, 2 People Weekly books: one celebrates the 70’s and the other celebrates the 80’s. The best part is each of these books comes with its own CD.
In addition, I can hardly wait to sit down and look through another book they gave me: Life: Christmas Around the World. I’ve skimmed the pages and the pictures look wonderful. We got a new Martha Stewart comforter set and sheets, the Superman movie collection, plus the new Superman Returns movie, a beautiful Pug throw:

And this awesome frog thermometer:

There were clothes, and calendars, bath towels, and other things, but I didn’t feel like taking pictures of everything Kevin and I received. However, I did take pictures of Andrew and Ashley’s gifts.
* Ashley would not allow me to photo her unmentionables. She received many in an assortment of colors.
* Not photographed for Andrew was a check for $25 and $25 cash.
HERE are the pictures of the kids gifts. Some of you may think I am bragging, while others of you are genuinely curious about what they got.

Cheesecake Presents
Kevin and I (mainly Kevin) have been cooking all day in between watching Christmas movies. Tomorrow night, we will celebrate Christmas Eve. We have always been in charge of the food this night. It’s fun really. We choose the menu, shop, and then cook everything. It’s a lot of work, but also very rewarding when complements are doled out.
We made these Christmas Cheesecake Presents for the first time:

They’re cute, but I don’t think they’re as sweet as a JELL-O Cheesecake. When it comes to a sweet, quick cheesecake, Jell-O is a great choice.

O' Brady's
I know that some of you who read me don’t live around here, so this is for those of you who do.

Kevin and I have found a new place where we love to eat. It’s called Beef 'O' Brady's. It’s located right off Leestown Road in the same section as the new Walgreen’s and Fazoli’s. It’s actually right down from Fazoli’s.
Looking at their website, I see that they have several locations in Lexington including one in Palomar Center. Coming soon, they will have a location at Man O War Boulevard and Tates Creek Road.
We have been on two different occasions. On my first visit, I ordered the Watterson. It is a sandwich made on grilled rye bread that has roast beef, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and mayonnaise. I didn’t have my camera with me that day or I would have taken a picture. I will order it again as it was delicious.
On my second visit, I had The ‘O” Brady Burger. Thankfully, I had my camera:

Kevin ordered the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger:

They have about twenty TV’s in the place. They even have TV’s in the restrooms. It’s nice and clean and the food is yummy. On both visits, we had great service. What more could you ask for?

Concluding The Shopping
Kevin’s Christmas vacation started yesterday. Since the kids were in school, we decided to brave Fayette Mall for last minute gifts. We arrived around 9:30 in the morning. I had specific stores I wanted to visit, so it made navigation easy.
We did buy several gifts, but I also found a beautiful red dress at Macy’s for Ashley to wear to church this Sunday. She’ll look stunning, I’m sure.
When we purchased one gift in particular, I told Kevin to make sure the guy at the counter opened it to see if it worked. The guy pointed to the display and said, “It’s just like this one. It’s brand new in the box, so it should be fine.” Still feeling a little trepidation, we bought the item unchecked.
When we arrived back home, I was relieved. I could actually feel my heart smiling because it was over. We fought the mall, but WE had won …. Or so I thought.
As I began wrapping the items we bought, I casually asked Kevin to check that one item in particular; the one we wanted checked at the mall.
He carefully opened the box, and put in the required amount of batteries. At first, the item seemed like it was going to work. It was making a clunky sound and then all of a sudden, gave out.
We turned it off and then back on again and the same thing happened. The item only wanted to operate for less than a minute.
I told Kevin we HAD to take it back immediately or it would drive me insane. (That’s just how I am.) We got the receipt and put the item back in its proper bag.
As soon as we picked Ashley up from school, back to Lexington and Fayette Mall we went – during rush hour traffic no less.
We returned the item and got our money back, but since they had no more in stock, they suggested we try Turfland Mall.
You guessed it. We went from the frying pan (Nicholasville Road) and into the fire (Harrodsburg Road). It was okay though. We weren’t in any hurry, so we stayed in good spirits.
Turfland Mall DID have the item we were looking for, but their display wasn’t working properly either, so we decided that these items simply weren’t reliable and we chose something completely different.
As of today, we are definitely finished with the mall until after Christmas and now my heart can REALLY smile.

Pretty Paper
I have a thing for wrapping paper. Even though I have bought many rolls on sale, I have also bought others because they are mini works of art.
I have said it before; I love to wrap. It pains me when I know that I don’t have one more gift that needs wrapping.
All the paper you see below will still be here next Christmas. Until then, these rolls of paper will be awaiting gifts.
To view the photo gallery, click on the picture.
It is unfortunate also that I have no more space to add new rolls to the mix. I love going out after Christmas and getting bunches of rolls on sale, not this year though! There’s no where to put it!

Buying Christmas Sweets
Something I only buy at Christmastime is hard candy:

I love to suck on it during church, but I know it’s bad for my teeth and full of sugar so I avoid it the rest of the year. Normally I stick to gum or sugar free cough drops.
Another thing I only buy at Christmas is chocolate covered cherries. I bought two boxes back in late November, early December and once those were gone, they were gone. I won’t buy any more.
Amazingly enough, we only bought one half gallon of Egg Nog this holiday season. What surprised me was the fact that we only drank half of it before it expired. Each time I thought about getting a glass, I would think, no, I’ll wait until later. Waiting until later, ended up equaling pouring it down the sink.
Kevin has purchased two containers of peppermint ice cream. He bought Egg Nog ice cream and wanted to buy another, but the store was out. One thing’s for sure, if you want those special Edy’s holiday ice creams, you’d better buy them all at once. They sell out very quickly and then that’s it for the season.

Peppermint Pecan Cake
The closer it gets to Christmas, the more Kevin and I want to make things. We eat some and give some away.
Today we made:
Peppermint Bark:

Roasted Cinnamon Pecans:

And some cookies we have aptly named, Kevin’s Cake Cookies:

We call them this because Kevin made up the ingredients as he was going along. When you bite into one, it is a cross between a brownie and a piece of cake.
** I have been requested to put post pictures of our Christmas tree. I will do this tomorrow.

Reading Irving
We actually traveled to Hamburg nine days before Christmas. We are very brave.
My goal was to finish Christmas shopping today. I don’t want to have to worry about it anymore if I don’t want to.
We went to a new store over there called Gordmans. I was tempted to buy several things for myself, but I didn’t. It’s too close to Christmas and there’s no telling what has been bought for me, so I will wait. I did find some cute things for other people though.
We visited many stores in that area and traffic wasn’t that bad actually. I think it’s because I traveled the back way as much as possible.
When we got home, we immediately had to do grocery shopping at Wal-Mart:

The menu has been made for Christmas Eve, so we bought that food in addition to our normal groceries. We were able to finish Christmas shopping and stocking stuffers. I am relieved.
Now I am sitting here thinking how it is already Saturday night. The day flew by. We came home and played two rounds of Mall Madness with the kids and now I am ready to relax. I want to read, but I don’t know if I’ll get to. I am at a pivotal point in my book and am on pins and needles wanting to know what will happen. Last night I was disappointed in myself for being too tired to read another word at 1 AM. Sleep called. The book waited. Maybe I can get in an hour of reading tonight.

Sandra Dee
Someone sent me this poem in email and I love it. I have no idea who the author is. If you know, tell me and I’ll give them full credit.
The Land of Sandra Dee
Long ago and far away,
In a land that time forgot,
Before the days of Dylan
Or the dawn of Camelot.
There lived a race of innocents,
And they were you and me,
Long ago and far away
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
Oh, there was truth and goodness
In that land where we were born,
Where navels were for oranges,
And Peyton Place was porn.
For Ike was in the White House,
And Hoss was on TV,
And God was in his heaven
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
We learned to gut a muffler,
We washed our hair at dawn,
We spread our crinolines to dry
In circles on the lawn.
And they could hear us coming
All the way to Tennessee,
All starched and sprayed and rumbling
in the Land of Sandra Dee.
We longed for love and romance,
And waited for the prince,
And Eddie Fisher married Liz,
And no one's seen him since.
We danced to "Little Darlin,'"
And Sang to "Stagger Lee"
And cried for Buddy Holly
In the Land of Sandra Lee.
Only girls wore earrings then,
And three was one too many,
And only boys wore flat-top cuts,
Except for Jean McKinney.
And only in our wildest dreams
Did we expect to see
A boy named George with Lipstick
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
We fell for Frankie Avalon,
Annette was oh, so nice,
And when they made a movie,
They never made it twice.
We didn't have a Star Trek Five,
Or Psycho Two and Three,
Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
Miss Kitty had a heart of gold,
And Chester had a limp,
And Reagan was a Democrat
Whose co-star was a chimp.
We had a Mr Wizard,
But not a Mr T,
And Oprah couldn't talk yet
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
We had our share of heroes,
We never thought they'd go,
At least not Bobby Darin,
Or Marilyn Monroe.
For youth was still eternal,
And life was yet to be,
And Elvis was forever,
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
We'd never seen the rock band
That was Grateful to be Dead,
And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson,
And Zeppelins weren't Led.
And Beatles lived in gardens then,
And Monkees in a tree,
Madonna was a virgin
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
We'd never heard of Microwaves,
Or telephones in cars,
And babies might be bottle-fed,
But they weren't grown in jars.
And pumping iron got wrinkles out,
And "gay" meant fancy-free,
And dorms were never coed
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
We hadn't seen enough of jets
To talk about the lag,
And microchips were what was left at
The bottom of the bag.
And hardware was a box of nails,
And bytes came from a flea,
And rocket ships were fiction
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
Buicks came with portholes,
And side show came with freaks,
And bathing suits came big enough
To cover both your cheeks.
And Coke came just in bottles,
And skirts came to the knee,
And Castro came to power
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
We had no Crest with Fluoride,
We had no Hill Street Blues,
We all wore superstructure bras
Designed by Howard Hughes.
We had no patterned pantyhose
Or Lipton herbal tea
Or prime-time ads for condoms
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
There were no golden arches,
No Perriers to chill,
And fish were not called Wanda,
And cats were not called Bill .
And middle-aged was thirty-five
And old was forty-three,
And ancient were our parents
In the Land of Sandra Dee.
But all things have a season,
Or so we've heard them say,
And now instead of May belline
We swear by Retin-A.
And they send us invitations
To join AARP,
We've come a long way, baby,
From the Land of Sandra Dee.
So now we face a brave new world
In slightly larger jeans,
And wonder why they're using
Smaller print in magazines.
And we tell our children's children
of the way it used to be,
Long ago and far away
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

Getting Out
It’s mid December, yet the weather has been comfortable. For the past few days, we have been able to take Guido for a walk:

When it gets too cold, we’re miserable walking, but I believe he is too.
He hates getting off his warm pillow in the mornings to go out into the cold. Kevin has to say his name several times and then give him a small nudge. He reluctantly, very reluctantly gets up, stretches, and jumps off the bed. He’s very quick to “go” when it’s cold outside or raining. He doesn’t like getting rained on, so he runs and finds a spot fast.
I know. You really didn’t need to know about Guido’s potty habits, but there you have it anyway.

Do you have a problem with that?

Merry Mary
I have two things to share with you.
First, THIS is a very interesting article about self-erasing, reusable paper. Personally, I don’t think this will go over well. I know when I print something I want to keep it. I don’t want it disappearing on me! Can you imagine someone in a busy office mistakenly loading the printer with self-erasing paper?! It would be total chaos.
Secondly, someone passed THIS site along to me. It is filled with hilarious Christmas cartoons. If you get bored at work, just pop over there and have a look :) Like Clark Griswold says, “’Tis the season to be merry!”

Thick And Sick
Have you seen any of the commercials for the Thickburgers at Hardee’s?
In my opinion, these are some of the grossest commercials ever. The newest one for the Chili Cheese Thickburger takes the cake. It shows a guy sitting on a couch eating a Chili Cheese Thickburger. A big hunk of chili falls off the burger and onto his khaki pants. He promptly picks up a French fry, uses it to scoop up the hunk of chili, and eats it. It is truly disgusting. The voiceover says, “The Chili Cheese Thickburger from Hardee’s: if you don’t want chili fries with it - too bad, you get them anyway. The Chili Cheese Thickburger at Hardee’s.”
Now, why would I want to eat something that messy – something that will definitely stain my khaki pants?
If you visit their WEBSITE, you can see all of their latest commercials. The one that I refer to is the first one. You really need to see it to appreciate how sick it makes me. I know one thing; I will NEVER order one of these things. YUCK!

Weekend Things
Saturday morning we rang the bell for The Salvation Army at Wal-Mart. The money donated goes to help a family in need. You can sign up for half hour increments, but for the last two years, we have signed up for an hour. At 32 degrees Saturday morning, it was very cold.
When we were finished ringing the bell, Kevin surprised me by suggesting we go see the new James Bond movie, Casino Royale. We bought a giant tub of buttery popcorn and the biggest coke I have ever seen. There is no way we could have finished that coke during the movie. If we had, we would have been in trouble! The movie was action-packed and I really liked the new Bond.
We got to the theatre before noon, so traffic wasn’t that bad, but by the time we got out it was bumper to bumper. I have never seen traffic that bad in Hamburg not to mention on Man-O-War. I wanted to get far away from there as soon as possible.
We bought Ashley her third coat since the cold set in. So far, we have bought her a blue jean jacket, a nice, dressy coat for church, and now a warm coat to play in and take to school. It’s not as if it could be helped. She had outgrown everything and needed all new. Next year, we’ll go through the same thing I’m sure.
Yesterday afternoon, Kevin made Peanut Butter Fudge and Peanut Butter Roll:

It is creamy and delicious!

Some Christmas Favorites
Here are some of my Christmas favorites:
* My favorite Christmas CD (actually it’s on a cassette) is: Christmas Sing With Frank and Bing. There are many CD’s available with Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby singing together, but not many include the song, Round & Round the Christmas Tree and I do love that song.
* My favorite Christmas movie is: Christmas Vacation. I tried to choose a favorite quote, but couldn’t pin it down to just one. There are too many to pick from!
* My favorite Christmas song is: Do You Hear What I Hear?
***
Do You Hear What I Hear?
Said the night wind to the little lamb,
"Do you see what I see? Do you see what i see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see? Do you see what i see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite,
With a tail as big as a kite."
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
"Do you hear what I hear? Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear? Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea,
With a voice as big as the sea."
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
"Do you know what I know? Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know? Do you know what I know?
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold--
Let us bring him silver and gold,
Let us bring him silver and gold."
Said the king to the people everywhere,
"Listen to what I say! Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people, everywhere,
Listen to what I say! Listen to what I say!
A Child, A Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light,
He will bring us goodness and light."
***
When the song gets to the part, said the king to the people everywhere, I just want to cry. I think of that mighty king telling his people about the little baby, Jesus. The king is powerful, but he knows who really holds all the power. This is the best I can explain the way I feel.
* My favorite ornament usually changes from one year to another. My parents will get me an ornament for Christmas. I will bring it home, put it up in the attic with the other ornaments, and forget about it. Then, next Christmas I pull it out and it’s all new to me again. I almost always say, “Oh, I forgot they got me this!”
This is my favorite ornament this year:

It's a cupcake they bought for me last Christmas at Irish Acres.
* My favorite Christmas book is: Santa's Toy Shop. As a child, I was fascinated with the pretty pictures in this book. Today, I still believe they are just as pretty.
What else is there? If I’ve forgotten any favorites, let me know.

The Green Grass Grows
If you don’t own a cat or have never been around cats, you may not know that cats enjoy eating grass.
I have always heard if dogs eat grass, this is a bad thing and a sign that their stomach hurts. For cats, many people believe that grass helps with the digestion process. I am a firm believer of this. This is why stores sell containers of grass in the cat section.
When you purchase the grass, you get a container with a lid. In the container is dirt and there is a little packet of grass seed for you to plant.
Planting is easy and the grass only takes a day to begin growing. Within three days, the grass is long and lush.

Why buy grass when the cat can get it outside?
For us the answer is easy. This grass is thinner and easier to digest than what the cat can find in our backyard. In addition, we have a freaky cat who likes to feast on the thickest grass he can find. Then the freaky cat enjoys coming back in the house and finding a place to upchuck said grass. Sometimes this upchucking occurs under a bed where it is very hard to clean.
Trust me; buying the grass is smart.

The War of the Hanger
I am aware that everyone has something that can set him off. For example, certain behaviors can drive a person crazy. Someone cracking his knuckles, nails on a chalkboard, a fork against an empty plate – these sounds can be very annoying.
But, there is a thing, an item, that can drive me crazy if I let it. That thing is a coat hanger. Yes, the common coat hanger can whip me into a fury. Whether it’s plastic, metal, or wood; when hangers get tangled together it makes me want to scream.

There’s nothing worse than having a handful of clothes in hand ready to hang and then not being able to separate the clothes in the closet because the hangers are tangled. Or, innocently going to the closet and trying to pull a hanger out and then finding it is wrapped around five other hangers. This can make me stand there, pull with all my might, jiggle the hanger around up and down, in and out while my mouth is formed in a mean snarl. It’s literally a temper tantrum of sorts. Mind you, at that point I’m not doing one bit of good to loosen the hanger. I’m sure if anyone saw this behavior, they would think I was crazy.
I have to breathe. I have to say to myself, Tami, you need to go slow and work the hanger out. Gentle maneuvering always does the trick. It’s sad that I can’t always remember this!

Gold
Yesterday in church, we saw a video with a very similar story to the one below. I think it is worth sharing. I have no idea who the author is.
Some time ago, a mother punished her 5-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of expensive gold wrapping paper.
Money was tight and she became even more upset when the child used the gold paper to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.
Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift box to her mother next morning and said, "This is for you, Momma."
The mother was embarrassed by her earlier over reaction, but her anger flared again when she opened the box and found it was empty.
She spoke to her daughter in a harsh manner. "Don't you know, young lady, when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package?"
She had tears in her eyes and said, "Oh, Momma, it's not empty! I blew kisses into it until it was full."
The mother was crushed. She fell on her knees and put her arms around her little girl, and she begged her forgiveness for her thoughtless anger.

Willy's House
Today we made our first ever gingerbread house with a little help from Willy Wonka:

We bought our kit at Toys R Us, but I’ve seen them at Wal-Mart for the same price (around $9.99) with two more ounces of candy.

Kevin made this side look like a face:

It requires lots of patience, but I had loads of fun!!

Baking
Today Kevin and I baked.
We made Chex Mix.
We made Bourbon Balls:

And we made Kentucky Bourbon Pecan Tarts.
This is what they look like before the powdered sugar (they are easier to identify this way):

This is the finished product:

It was fun!

November Movies
Here are the movies I watched during the month of November. Let me know if you have any thoughts on them.
11-6-06 An American Haunting - This movie is based on the true story of a possession. I loved it and would watch it again. I only wish it lasted longer.
11-7-06 Ghost - I watched this movie about 15 times when I was a teenager. I remember getting my parents to sit down and watch it with me. I will never forget what my mom said when they played Unchained Melody. She said, “That song never lasted that long for me.” If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know what she was talking about.
11-8-06 Election - Kevin and I watched this movie on TV. It was interesting, but I found it odd seeing Matthew Broderick in the role of a cheater. He plays a high school teacher who has an affair with his best friend’s wife. Reese Witherspoon is one of his students and you just love to hate her.
11-9-06 Pillow Talk - This movie was made in 1959, a time when there were party lines – telephone lines that were shared between two or more houses. Rock Hudson is a playboy bachelor who ties up the line constantly day and night while Doris Day, who shares the line, just wants to use her phone occasionally. This was a cute, clean, fun movie.
11-10-06 Under the Tuscan Sun - Definitely a chick-flick, you’ll want to watch this movie for the scenic views. It is about a woman who goes on vacation and decides to stay and rebuild her life in Tuscany.
11-13-06 The Break-Up - I know I’m supposed to like this movie because it has Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, but for me, this was a one time only movie. I don’t know why anyone would enjoy watching a movie with this much arguing.
11-19-06 How to Make an American Quilt - This is a wonderful movie with a really bad name. The way it was made reminds me of Fried Green Tomatoes, which is one of my favorites. Yes, it is a bit of a chick-flick, but I promise you won’t be disappointed. It’s about a girl who takes time away from her boyfriend to stay with her grandmother for the summer. While she’s there, she hears the interesting stories about her relatives pasts.
11-22-06 Planes, Trains & Automobiles - This is one of THE FUNNIEST and most touching Thanksgiving movies you will ever see. Steve Martin is headed home for the Thanksgiving holiday when his plane is delayed. He hooks up with John Candy and the two of them try to get home together. If you have never seen this movie, I would suggest renting it today. It doesn’t matter that it’s about Thanksgiving. It is hilarious!
